Beaver, Margaret Ellen,
Dated: 10/09/2004
Carlyle, SK.
BEAVER, MARGARET ELLEN - Late of Carlyle, died Sunday July 25, 2004 at the age of 86. She leaves to mourn her passing and to remember her remarkable person and life, family and numerous friends and former students. She is survived by her nephew, Barry (Donna) Beaver, Carlyle. Nieces, Brenda Beaver (Carlyle); Carol (Bill) Shepherd, Moose Jaw. Predeceased by her parents, John and Margaret Beaver. Brother, William Robert Beaver. Sister-in-law, Nora Beaver. Despite her protestations that she was never going to teach she made it a rewarding career spanning 35 years. After attending Regina Normal School she taught in a number of rural Saskatchewan schools including Carlyle, Oxbow, Macoun, Benson, Grenfell and Craik. Before taking business classes at Balfour Technical in Regina with the aim and desire to become a stenographer. She found work in Calgary with the General Motors Acceptance Company but after her teaching stint found it dull by comparison. So it was back to school accepting an offer to teach business subjects in Swift Current until 1966. She moved to Saskatoon and received her Bachelor of Education degree in 1967 and taught at Evan Hardy and Walter Murray schools until her retirement from formal teaching in 1977. While we never benefited from her expertise in the classroom we are grateful to those former students and fellow teachers who have and shared their memories with us, we do know she was a teacher until the day she died and that will always be. The lessens she taught were stamped with her unique humour, only to be experienced, difficult to explain, often the deeper meaning coming hours or days later as you unwound one of her magnificent word plays. She loved her family and friends and what's more she told us and often. She was grateful for the time we could afford her, never wanting to inconvenience our lives. Family was very important to her because as she often remarked, "there are so few of us left. " In the 40's she and mother went down East to visit her Mom's relatives and remarked that "there was just no end of places and people to visit. " When she returned in 1991 she was saddened by how many had passed and how frail the older ones were. One of her greatest memories was of a trip she took with her Dad in 1952 by train and then via the Empress of Scotland to England to visit "the overseas relatives." These 2 family based trips may have been the beginning of another of her great pleasures in life, traveling. She often spoke about how welcoming the family had been to her and her Dad and after a month of their hospitality when it was time to return to Canada she wrote in her trip journal, "upon our farewells, the tears were plentiful." If she had a regret it was that she didn't get to take a final trip to England with her family so she could introduce them to what was left of "the relatives." At a time when most people were not venturing far beyond their borders she took delight in traveling to places that even today are not preferred holiday destinations: East Berlin, Japan, China, Russia, the Ukraine, South and Central Africa. She also toured around Europe, New Zealand, and Australia as well as crossing North America from coast to coast. Traveling competed with her hobbies which were many and varied. From square dancing where she was often pleased to report that she hadn't missed a dance all evening, to duplicate bridge, gardening, curling or public speaking in recent years. Auntie Ellen held an enthusiasm about these activities which never failed to delight her or whomever she was recounting a memorable event to. If family was important to her then the friendships she forged were equally so. We have had the pleasure of getting to know many of her special friends and the esteem to which she felt for you her friends is for always. While your presence is missed your spirit will live on in our lives. Brenda Beaver Barry & Donna Beaver Carol and Bill Shepherd and Family.
