COOLIDGE - Gustavus Becher Gustavus Becher passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at the age of 43 years. Gus is survived by his wife Karna, his son Joel and daughter Amanda; his parents Gus and Beverly Coolidge; his brother David (Kate) and sister Jeanne; his grandparents Gus and Evelyn Coolidge; nephew Evan and numerous relatives and friends. Gus received a B.Sc. Degree in geophysics from the University of Calgary. He worked in the Alberta oil industry as a geophysicist and was a member of APEGGA, later entering Washington State University where he received an MBA Degree. Gus loved sports and was a great fullback for the Provincial Champion, Calgary Colts. Gus enjoyed his years as a member of the Young Canadians. He was an accomplished guitarist, composing music and lyrics. One of his idols, Gordon Lightfoot, acknowledged him for a song he wrote about Mr. Lightfoot. Gus was a great talent, and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. DERRICK - Patricia Patricia died suddenly August 3, 2003, just two weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. Kate Thompson, a close friend, was with her at the end. Patricia was predeceased by her soulmate John Ife, and her parents Bill and Gwyneth Derrick of South Wales. Left to grieve are brother Paul of Yorkshire, U.K.; stepchildren, Mark Ife and Sandy McIvor and family; cousins, Mollie Richards of Abbotsford and David Richards of Sooke; and friends in Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Boston, all over the U.K. and scattered around the world. Patricia was born in Ton Pentre, Glamorgan, Wales in 1945. After high school, she worked in London in journalism and the civil service for five years before continuing her education. Patricia came to Canada in the mid-1970's and worked in journalism for a period of time before moving to Edmonton in 1982, where she worked in communications for the provincial government. It was there that she met and married John. John and Patricia moved to Victoria in 1993. The two enjoyed a full life together, touching the lives of many, both professionally and personally. Her life changed irrevocably in July 2000 when John died from a sudden heart attack. If there is an afterlife, they are together again. Patricia won the admiration of her colleagues and staff as a communications director for three provincial ministries before her early retirement last fall. She leaves her many friends, colleagues and those she mentored to remember her each in their own way. A Memorial Service in the Anglican tradition will be held at McCALL BROS. Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Streets, Victoria, on Monday, August 11, 2003 at 3:30 p.m. with a reception to follow in the Graham McCall Family Centre. DVORNEK - George John 1926 - 2003 George John Dvornek, beloved husband of Mrs. Irene Dvornek of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Medical Centre on Wednesday, August 6, 2003, after a lengthy illness at the age of 77 years. George was born April 13, 1926 in Albert Park (Calgary). He served in the Army for a few years, then began employment with the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1944 where he worked for forty years. George was one of the last men in Canada to work on a steam engine and during the filming of "The National Dream", he tended to the maintenance of the steam engine. George married Irene Trauter on August 4, 1956. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed camping. Besides his loving wife Irene, George is also survived by two daughters and a son, Dori and Randy Koltusky of Strathmore, Debbie Dvornek and Ken Baker, Darcy Dvornek of Calgary; three grandchildren, Lukas, Jenna-Lee and Patrick. He is also survived by a sister Maryann McClary of Quesnel, BC; a brother Frank and Jean Dvornek of Calgary, and a brother Steve Dvornek. He was predeceased by his parents Julia and Michael Dvornek. EDWARDS - Margaret (1912 - 2003) Margaret Arabella Edwards (Wall) was born February 26, 1912 at Chrystal City, Manitoba. Her parents were Elmer and Frances Wall. She had one sister, Mary "Blanch" Green. The Wall family moved to Tessier, Sask. in 1918 and then to Delisle, Sask. in 1927. Margaret graduated from Teachers College in Saskatoon and took a job teaching in a one room school near Nipawin, Sask. While teaching in the community Margaret met Crawford Osborne Edwards. They were married on October 13, 1939 and eventually settled and raised their four children in Nipawin. Crawford and Margaret moved the family to Saskatoon in 1967 so their children could further their education. Margaret was predeceased by Crawford in 1995, her sister and one granddaughter. In 2001 Margaret moved to Calgary, AB to be closer to her family. She resided at the Renoir and then briefly at the Beverly Centre before her passing on August 1. Margaret is survived by her four children, Crawford "Grant" (Vancouver, B.C.), Don (Gloria) (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Marion (Bryan) Benson (Longview, Texas) and Russell (Myrnalynn) (Calgary, AB). Margaret took great pride in her four children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Margaret enjoyed sharing and living her Christian faith. She was known for her kindness and her unconditional compassion and care for others. As a result she had many good friends. Her home was always open to visitors; the table lavished with good food. She is already missed by her family and friends. However, she is now resting in heaven, reunited with her many friends and the love of her life, Crawford. Her Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in Saskatoon at Ebenezer Baptist Church located at 107 McWillie Avenue. FORTNEY - Edward Ross 1926 - 2003 Edward Fortney passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary, Alberta on August 7, 2003 at the age of 77 years. He will be loved and missed by his beloved wife of fifty-one years, Patricia; his son Douglas (Heather); daughters, Denise (Dave McInnis) and Valerie (Robert Majamaa); grandchildren, Kristen and Mark; sister Jennette (Ron Ralston) and brother Donald; sisters-in-law, Eleanor and Vera; and his many relatives and friends in Calgary, Winnipeg and across the country. Ed was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Marie, brothers, Allan and Joe, who passed away on August 5, 2003, sister-in-law Doris, his children, Robbie and Shelley, and his granddaughter Laura. Ed was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on April 17, 1926. The eldest of five children, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a teenager and served overseas during the Second World War. After a whirlwind six week courtship, he married Patricia Simpson in 1952; the newlyweds moved to England where he was stationed. In 1953, after the first of their five children, Douglas, was born, they settled in Winnipeg for the next twenty-five years. Ed moved his family to Calgary in 1978, where he lived until his death. Ed held a variety of jobs to support his growing brood, but found his true calling as a Realtor, a job that spotlighted his qualities of salesmanship, charm and the gift of gab. He overcame two major personal tragedies, the loss of his son Robbie in 1974 in a snowmobiling accident, and his daughter Shelley, who was killed in 1990 by a drunk driver. Ed will be remembered by those who loved him for his love of the open road, his keen interest in the paranormal and his lifelong care and concern for his family. But most of all, he will be remembered as one of the wittiest, most charming and funny people we ever knew. Dad had the ability to make friends with anyone, and his physical comedy and mischievous sense of humour kept us all laughing over the years. Ed, you will be terribly missed and mourned by your family and friends. GIBSON - Peggy Peggy Gibson, who has resided in Kelowna for the past fifteen years but was a long-time resident of Calgary, passed away suddenly at home on August 7, 2003. HAM - Harry Kenneth (Ken) Harry Kenneth (Ken) Ham passed away in Kelowna early morning Wednesday, August 6, 2003 just short of his 83rd birthday. He leaves behind to mourn his death and celebrate his life, his loving wife, Joy Broomfield; his sons, Hugh and Gordon and their wives, Carol and Paddy; daughter Jane-Anne; stepdaughter Jill Taylor and her husband Jeff; grandchildren, Dean, Brenda, Jarrod and Jeremy; and Jill's children, Jeff, Ali and Robert. Ken is also survived by his brothers, Jean and Joe and their wives, Bernice and Dora. Ken was born in Fort Benton, Montana on August 17, 1920 and moved from there to Turner Valley, Alberta where he spent his childhood known to his many friends as "Red" because of his strawberry blond hair. He was a very talented hockey player. Ken attended SAIT in Calgary to study aircraft fabrication but when World War II broke out he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he trained as a fighter pilot at Camp Borden in Ontario. He was assigned to the Royal Air Force and flew Typhoon fighter aircraft with the R.A.F.'s 197 Squadron in England commencing towards the end of the Battle of Britain until his plane was damaged over LeHavre, France forcing him to crash land back in Britain. The injuries Ken suffered in the crash impacted the remainder of his life. Ken continued to serve with the R.A.F. in reserve until the end of the war when he returned to Alberta and studied chemical engineering for three years at the University of Alberta. Ken met his first wife, Cathy, while overseas and they married in her hometown, Detroit, Michigan at the end of the war. They moved to Edmonton, Alberta where they raised their family until moving to Calgary in 1965. Throughout his life Ken worked in the oil industry commencing with summer employment in Turner Valley and, after the war, with a number of service companies based in Edmonton and Calgary. Ken enjoyed working in "the patch" throughout his life and made many life-long friends during those years. He retired to Harrop, British Columbia in 1987 where he was active in organizing and participating in the election of a Reform Party candidate. Ken relished political activity for a number of years and, in the course of his travels, renewed his life-long friendship with Joy whom he married in 1999. They resided in Kelowna until Ken's death but periodically returned to Calgary to visit friends and family. Ken will be lovingly remembered by those who knew him. A Memorial Service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 2003 at the SPRINGFIELD FUNERAL HOME, 2020 Springfield Road in Kelowna. A reception for family and friends followed. A second Memorial Service will be held later in the Calgary area at a date and time to be announced. ALGAR - Mark March 20, 1959 - September 28, 2003 Mark was born in Rimbey, Alberta and passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, surrounded by his loving family and friends on September 28 at the age of 44. Mark is survived by his fiancee Tammy Rochon (and her son Cody); son Justin; parents Mel (Bonnie) and Verlie Algar; two brothers, Kevin and Darren; maternal grandmother Ragna Olson; nephews, Garrett, Ryan and Ward; several uncles, aunts, cousins and numerous wonderful close friends. After completing his high school education in Calgary, Mark went on to receive a Diploma in Petroleum Technology from SAIT and a Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering from Montana Tech. He was a Professional Engineer whose career in the Oil and Gas Industry culminated as V.P. Engineering with Devlan Exploration Inc. Mark, an avid fan of hockey and football, enjoyed camping, fishing, biking with his son, traveling to warmer climates and the company of his numerous friends. ASHFORD - Ian Herbert 1928 - 2003 Ian Herbert Ashford, of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Sarcee Hospice on Monday, September 29, 2003 after a long illness, to join his cherished wife Ruth and daughter Carolyn. In every way, every day of his life, Ian demonstrated his devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed by his children, Deborah, Doug, Janet and Paul; their spouses, Paul, Carol, Cam and Leeann; and his grandchildren, Christopher, Colin, Tyrone, Allison, Neil, Jim, Susanne, Gabrielle and Caitlin. Ian was the son of Herbert and Evelyn Ashford, who were missionaries in India when Ian was born. Ian divided his childhood years between India and many parts of Canada, spending several of his formative years in Calgary while his father was posted overseas during World War II. Ian received degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and Queen's University, and worked for Imperial Oil for thirty-three years. At the time of his retirement in 1984, he was the manager of Human Resources for Esso Resources Canada Ltd. Ian and Ruth spent their retirement in Victoria, where he enjoyed living by the ocean. Ian combined his two favourite pastimes, carpentry and boating, by building two boats. The family spent many wonderful summers boating in Georgian Bay on his first boat, the "Ruthian". He also loved taking his grandchildren on rides on the back of his motorcycle, and playing tennis. He was a loving grandfather to Bryn and Glynnis Burton and to Aidan and Leah Keeley. He will be sorely missed by his much-loved nieces and nephews and their families. The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to Dr. Siray, Dr. Branch and Dr. Higgin and to all the staff of the Oilfields General Hospital for their compassionate and extraordinary care.
