Sr. Mary Irene Sitter O.S.E.
December 15, 1916 – July 19, 2013
After a brief illness at the Humboldt District Heath Complex, Sr. Mary Irene was welcomed in death by her beloved Lord on July 19, 2013. Sr. Mary Irene Sitter was born on December 15, 1916 in Winnipeg, MB to Caroline (Schreyer) and Sebastian Sitter and received the name Mary in Baptism. With her family of one sister and six brothers, she attended St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, a mostly German Congregation who were being served by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. On the advice of her pastor, Mary entered St. Elizabeth Convent in Humboldt, a German community of Sisters. She received the name Irene upon entering the novitiate. In the 1960’s she added her baptismal name and became known as Sr. Mary Irene. In 1937, Sr. Mary Irene pronounced her temporary vows as a religious and her final vows in 1940. She celebrated her 75th anniversary as a religious in 2012. Sr. Mary Irene worked in the admission and administrative office at St. Elizabeth Hospital and took courses in accounting and administration. Later she served as administrator and local superior of St. Michael’s Hospital in Cudworth and of St. Joseph Hospital in Macklin. For many years, Sr. Mary Irene was assigned to the position of General Treasurer of the congregation and did a superb job of managing the finances. She loved working with numbers and took great pride in her books that were always meticulously done. Her creative side showed itself in the beautifully arranged museum she set up for the congregation, the neatly kept archives, the beautifully wrapped parcels used as gifts and her decorating skills. We remember Sr. Mary Irene as meticulous and neat, a very private person and yet as someone who was very involved in the life of the congregation. She was an avid stamp collector - assisted by her brothers - and she loved traveling and reading, the latter right to her last year of life. Sr. Mary Irene is fondly remembered by her Sisters in community; her sister Anne; her brothers Paul, and Rev. Charles Sitter S.J; her sisters-in-law Lorraine and Anne and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Caroline and Sebastian Sitter; her sister Theresa in infancy; her brothers George, John, Jack and Joseph; her sisters-in-law Clara and Judith. A Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, July 14, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt. Celebrated by, Abbot Peter Novecosky OSB. Interment followed at the Sisters of St. Elizabeth Cemetery

Fredrick P. Gerwing
July 5, 1931 – July 18, 2013
Fred was born in 1931 in Baker, Nebraska, to John and Amalia Gerwing. He came to Lake Lenore when he was two years old and spent a happy life there farming and raising a large family. He attended St. Peter’s College in his high school years. Fred married Marie Nakoneshny in 1955 and they worked and played together for over 58 years. “Pa” had a fine tenor voice. He was part of the Annaheim Men’s Choir in the '40s and '50s, then part of St. Peter’s Chorus, the Bier Tent Gang (where he yodeled), and, most recently, the Marysburg Regional Choir. He led the music at St. Anthony’s RC Church in Lake Lenore for decades, directing the Latin midnight mass at every Christmas until his illness took his strength. His voice and leadership will always be remembered. Pa taught us all to play cards and really, really enjoy it. Most of us are happy to play cards for hours at a stretch and still not be tired of it. We learned German phrases: sacred ones from church, less sacred ones from cards. After moving on to the role of farming consultant, Pa loved spending his time fishing at the lake. He tended to his cattle, pigs, and chickens; he loved the farm cats; he crowed down the bantam rooster. A former curler, he was an avid spectator at countless sports and music events. He loved to read and he worked tirelessly to keep our grammar and pronunciation at a presentable level. He was sought after by so many for his knowledge, expertise, and good company. There was a constant trail of family young and old to visit him and mom at home. In one way or another, our father passed along his own loves and passions to his children and grandchildren: from music and fishing to farming and cards to reading and sports. We will always honour him and think of him with love and fondness as we live the lives he played such a huge role in forming. Fred is survived by his wife, MARIE, children Des (Karen), Paul (Kim), Patricia (Kevin), Phil (Pat), Roberta, Esther (Dave), Terry (Karen), Roger (Shelley), Dennis (Cecile), Matthew (Stephanie), Lorne (Gail), and Fred (Shauna), his daughter-in-law, Stacey, and by 42 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn him are his brothers, Clem (Hedwig) and Felix (Eleanor), his sisters, Laura Berscheid, Rosemary Lalonde (Bert) and Polly Merkosky (Maurice), his sisters-in-law Julie and Rita, Nakoneshny in-laws Dave, Cecilia, Harvey (Cheryl), Emelia (Reg), Sylvia (John), and Lawrence, and a slew of nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his parents; brothers Ewald, John, Gerhard, Alphonse, Charlie, and infants John, Hugo, and Fred; sisters Sophie and Esther; and by his son, Norman, in 2010. As sorry as he was to leave us, he looked forward to being reunited with Norm and other loved ones. God be with you 'til we meet again.
Cameron Rieger
October 13, 1995 - July 9, 2013
The sudden and unexpected death of Cameron Rieger, 17 years old of Humboldt, occurred on Tuesday, July 9, 2013. Cameron was born on October 13, 1995 in Saskatoon to Nicole Rieger and Richard Saretsky. He attended school in Saskatoon, Medicine Hat and was presently a student at HCI in Humboldt. While Cameron was going to school, he also worked at several part time jobs. In June, he started working at Big Sky Truck Wash, where he was proud of his accomplishments and was starting to learn how to drive the semi’s. He was a quick learner, mechanically inclined and very artistic. Cameron loved hunting, quadding and cruising and was looking forward to fixing up a 1988 Chev ½ ton. He enjoyed spending time with his faithful companion, Shadow, and hanging out with his friends, especially his cousins, who he always liked to tease and play pranks on. He was especially close to his cousin and best friend, Samuel, who was like a brother to him. Cameron always wrestled with his uncle Rocky and bugged his uncle Jason about Ford trucks. He was a very easy going person and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Cameron will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his mom, Nicole Rieger & Edward Arndt of Saskatoon; dad, Richard Saretsky of Humboldt; sister, Deseray Rieger of Saskatoon; dog and faithful companion, Shadow; grandparents, Robert & Joan Rieger of Bruno and Larry & Thérèse Saretsky of Lanigan; aunts and uncles: Jennifer & Jason Staniec of Humboldt; Rocky & Paulette Saretsky (Godparents) of Humboldt; Tammy Saretsky & Rob Sufferin of Saskatoon; Aaron & Pammella Saretsky of Humboldt and Crystal Saretsky & Frank Blaszczak of Red Cliff, AB; great grandmother, Raymonde Perras of Montmartre; and numerous cousins, great aunts and uncles and special friends. Cameron was predeceased by his great grandparents: Clara & Joseph Rieger, Mary & Irvin Wise, Agnes & Nicholas Saretsky and Frank Perras. A Prayer Service was held on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. presided by Jenny Irwin. A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Ephriam Mensah. Both services were held from St. Augustine R.C. Parish Humboldt. Interment followed at St. Augustine Cemetery. Memorial donations in Cameron’s memory may be directed to the Humboldt SPCA. Louis Syroteuk
June 9, 1941 - July 6, 2013
The death of Louis Syroteuk,72 years, of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, occurred at his residence on Saturday, July 6, 2013. Louis was born on June 9, 1941, to Fred and Annie (nee Paproski) Syroteuk the 11th of 13 children on the family farm near Plunkett. He attended Badger School and completed his education with Brock Duke. Louis enjoyed all sport activities and helped with janitor work, bringing the water and sweeping floors. Louis continued to work on the family farm and took over the farm in 1963. During those years, he became a member of the Glynfield Grain Club. Louis raised some stock cattle, Charlois, Simmentals, Herefords and some purebreds as well. He took pride in the cattle and enjoyed the work. Louis was very active at St. Mary’s Church as the president and many other roles. He took pride in maintaining the grounds to perfection at the cemetery for many years. Curling was his number one sport as he curled all around the area and enjoyed watching the game. Louis also enjoyed skating and hunting. Louis was a very social person and loved people especially when you came to his home he loved to entertain by cooking a wonderful meal for you and playing a great game of cards. Giving of him self came easy as he volunteered for many years and was always ready and willing to help out in any capacity possible. When ever Louis had a job to do he did it to the best of his abilities which meant it was done to perfection and many times it was done without payment, it was done just because he wanted to help and make his community a better place. He was very active in the Humboldt Vintage Club. After retirement in 2006 Louis moved to Kinsmen Court in Humboldt and enjoyed his life in the “city” but due to failing health he had to move to St. Mary’s Villa where he resided for the past 2 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his time there especially the activities and always having someone to visit with and sharing his warm and loving smile that we all will miss dearly. Louis will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his eight siblings: Mike Syroteuk of Kamsack, Mary Kobzey of White Rock, BC, Joe (Mary) Syroteuk and Bernadette Knaus of Humboldt, Leonard (Rita) Syroteuk of Guelf, ON, Mervyn (Jean) Syroteuk of Creston, BC, Louise Hale and Delores McKeown both of Humboldt; sister-in-law Alice Syroteuk of Humboldt; by numerous nieces, nephews and many good friends. Louis was predeceased by his parents Fred and Annie Syroteuk; three brothers: John Syroteuk, Walter (Gladys) Syroteuk, Cazmere and one sister Emily (Edward) Dodd; sister-in-law Valentina Syroteuk and four brothers-in-law: William Kobzey, Edward Knaus, Cyril Hale and Paul McKeown. A Public Visitation was held on Tuesday July 9, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. from Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home Hwy 5 East Humboldt. A Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt celebrated by Fr. Gregory Roth. Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery

Jake Saretsky
August 23, 1919 - July 5, 2013
Jacob Virgil Saretsky died peacefully at his daughter Arlis’s home surrounded by family in Saskatoon on Friday, July 5, 2013. He was 93 years old and lived a full life, rich with family and friends. Jake was born on August 23, 1919 to Alex J. and Anna (nee Gurski) Saretsky in the Burr District. He obtained his education at the Willow Ridge School. As a young person he enjoyed helping out on the family farm. In 1941 he joined the Canadian Army and went overseas for 4 years with the “Irish Fusiliers” as a Corporal and then a Staff Sergeant. In 1945 he returned to the Burr area and began employment with the Sask. Wheat Pool in Attica, SK. On July 11, 1950 he married the love of his life Mary Paproski and they began their busy lives together. They also operated a general store, post office, gas station and a small farm. In 1958 they moved to Peterson where Jake assumed responsibility for a larger, busier grain handling point. He then also began selling crop insurance with the Co-operators. There were numerous hobbies and likes that kept Jake busy throughout his life, including raising six children. He was a marksman in the Army which was beneficial when it came to hunting. He also loved fishing. Jake was very involved in sports especially curling and baseball and he also became a district fast ball umpire. Jake was a skilled gardener. His heart was near to the earth and loved to work in his vegetable garden. Tomatoes were his specialty; he produced many great tomato crops with an abundance of fruit. While planting and pruning his many varieties of fruit and shade trees he was able to enjoy watching and listening to the birds especially the meadow lark that was his favorite bird. A very spiritual man Jake was very involved with the St. Agnes R.C. Church in Peterson in many capacities which included the choir and “Lay Presider”. Mary and Jake were skilled dancers and loved this activity. Jake was always actively acquiring knowledge. He loved reading, and filled his relaxation time with reading, especially books about Saskatchewan and world history and current events. A very strong, lifelong Co-op supporter and had memberships in many local communities. Jake’s deepest love was the Saskatchewan Prairies; he was very passionate about the geography of the land, open space, people, agriculture and the sunsets. Jake always made time to stop and chat and enjoyed social activities but his family’s presence was his best love. A man of peace he did not like war and conflict – fighting was a waste of precious time in his eyes. As a meadow lark sings praises and love so did Jake as he always had positive things to say and focused on the good in people. This is a wonderful example to share and instill in his family and friends. Jake will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his six children and three grandchildren: Arlis McQuarrie of Saskatoon; Gerard Saretsky(Jeanette McKee) of Saskatoon and family Allison Saretsky of Toronto and Whit Saretsky (Catherine Elmer) of Lloydminster, AB; Reg Saretsky of Calgary, AB; Arlene Saretsky of Saskatoon; Lori Saretsky of Vancouver, BC; and Susan Saretsky (Daryl Christophe) and daughter MacKenna all of Calgary, AB; three sisters: Anne Smith, Cecilia Blanch of Humboldt and Joan Pritchard of Victoria, BC; one brother Felix (Lorraine) Saretsky of Emma Lake; sisters-in-law: Veronica Saretsky, Barbara Saretsky both of Humboldt and Yvonne Saretsky of Richmond, BC; brother-in-law Maurice Vinet of Saskatoon; and by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and members of the Paproski family. Jake was predeceased by his wife Mary (July 2, 2007); parents Alex J. and Anna Saretsky; siblings: Madeline (Homer) Nesbitt, George Saretsky, Agnes Vinet, Emil Saretsky, Rudi Saretsky (in infancy), Rudy Saretsky, Mildred (Frank) Klassen and Lenore (Ralph) Neis. A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt at 2:00 p.m. celebrated by Fr. Greg Roth. Internment followed at St. Agnes R.C. Cemetery, Peterson. Louis Ulrich
March 4, 1910 - June 22, 2013
Alois Anton Ulrich was born to Franz and Johanna (Reithofer) Ulrich on March 4, 1910, in the village of Hochneukirchen, NOE, Austria. Seeking better times, Alois immigrated to Canada at the age of twenty in 1930. Once in Canada he took a train west, to St. Gregor. He worked for several area farmers – among them Smith, Gourley and Andrew Foushe. He also worked for the John Kouschkowski family at Handel, SK. He enjoyed his time there and kept in touch with the family throughout the years that followed. Another of his early jobs was working to dig the basement of the Delta Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon. He later returned to the Spalding area and began farming west of town along with three others from his village in Austria – his brother Josef Ulrich, Franz Kager Sr., and Friedrich Beiglböck. There were many funny stories from these times, one of our favourites being the time that Louis and one of the others went to Prince Albert looking for work. They found a large farm totally enclosed by a fence, but couldn’t get in, so they climbed the fence and went in but didn’t see anyone so left again the same way they had entered. When they came back and described the place they learned that they had been inside the penitentiary. He was married to Ruby Mortenson in 1942. They worked hard on the farm for many years, semi-retiring to Spalding in 1977, but always maintaining a strong interest in the farm, and anyone that dared to speak at noon when the Prairie Farm Report came on was taking a big risk. After Ruby’s passing he lived in their home in Spalding for several years, and could often be seen driving his little brown truck around town or out to the fields. When living alone became too much he moved to the home in Middle Lake for a brief time, and then to Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby Ulrich (2001); daughter-in-law, Lena Ulrich (1988); son, Eduard Kager (1997); great-granddaughter, Ruby Lengyel (2009); parents, Franz and Johanna Ulrich; brothers, Josef, Franz, Rupert and Ernst; sisters, Anna Ulrich and Maria Riegler. Surviving are son, Garry and Karen Ulrich of Spalding, SK and family: Garth Ulrich; Candace and Blaine Albertson (Tristan, Jade and Caitlyn); Kenneth and Mindy Bourque (Blake and Kruiz); Michelle Bourque; and Caley and Kristelle Hoffman (Seth and Avery); son, Dennis Ulrich of Spalding, SK and family: Kristine and Dan Webb (Shana); Kara and Cory Lengyel (liam); Charity and Sean Allan (Cohen and Crosbie); and Bartley Ulrich; daughter-in-law, Maria Kager of Hochneukirchen, Austria and family: Edmund Kager; Ulrike and Josef Schabauer (Philipp and Tamara); Johannes and Karolina Kager (Susanna); Waldtraud Schuster (Rainer and Kerstin); and Maria Puchegger (Bastian); sister, Johanna Schuster of Vienna, Austria; in-laws, Bertha Ulrich, Joe and Cecile Mortenson, Norman Mortenson and many other relatives in Canada and Austria. The Funeral Service for Louis was held on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt, officiated by Rev. John Rapp. Interment will take place at Dovre Lutheran Cemetery, Spalding district at a later date. Donations in Louis’ memory may be made to the Quill Plains Centennial Lodge Activity Department.
