Anne Collingridge
August 12, 1925 - June 5, 2011
Anne (Annie) May Collingridge (nee Buskell) passed away peacefully June 5, 2011 at the age of 85 with family at her side.
Anne was born to Louella and James Buskell August 12, 1925 and educated at St. James, Manitoba. Like so many during the war years, she quit school in grade 10 to work full time. In 1947 she married Wilbert (Bill) Walter Collingridge, formerly of the RCAF. The couple moved to Quill Lake, Saskatchewan where they began raising a large family and immediately became enmeshed in community life.
Anne was an accomplished athlete – graceful and talented. As a teenager, she had participated in ballet, tap dance, and “fancy skating,” for which she won a medal in 1946. At first, she found the transition from city to isolated farmhouse in a small community challenging. True to her nature, she found a positive way to cope with this isolation. When her husband finally returned home from work at night, she would wade through waist-high snow banks in the chilly, black night to reach the tiny village’s skating rink.
It didn’t take long before Quill Lake youngsters discovered Anne’s talents. They begged her to share her skills with them; the result was the formation of the Quill Lake figure skating club in 1951. The club soon became known for its outstanding performances and choreography – with Anne opening her own numbers with cartwheels followed by rink-length spread eagles and breathtaking split jumps. Skaters’ mothers caught the excitement, sewing colourful costumes that further spread the fame of the little club. In 1961, the Kinsmen ice carnival enjoyed a record attendance: almost 1000 audience members.
Soon Anne was called to establish further clubs and to teach eager students in surrounding communities. Always young at heart, at the age of 50 Anne tested and passed a speed skating course as well as several dance tests. Her involvement in the sport also extended to regional coordinator and skating judge. Both the CFSA and her home community recognized Anne’s volunteer efforts with plaques, certificates, and awards. In 1996, daughter Shirley founded the U of S Anne Collingridge Figure Skating Club in her mother’s honour.
Anne’s community involvement didn’t stop at the ice surface. She looked after the books for her husband’s blacksmith business. When her husband was incapacitated with Parkinson’s Disease, she supplemented the family income by selling Tupperware, Stanley, Studio Girl, and Regal. She also babysat, cleaned bachelors’ homes and the local post office. She was a long-time correspondent for the Watson Witness and the Wadena News.
Anne’s energy seemed unflagging. She raised her own eight children, looked after stepdaughter Grace, and stepsons George and Harold while they attended school in Quill Lake. No one was ever turned away from her table and extra places were always set at Christmastime. Her children’s friends fondly called her “Mom” and “Mrs. C.” Anne loved to play cards and became known for her “wild” bidding in Smear.
She participated in the executive of the Mission Circle, was an active member of the Anglican Church and, also as a volunteer, became a much-in-demand coordinator of wedding and other large banquets. For her long-time contribution to the Ladies Auxiliary, Anne was named a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
In 1993 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, she moved to Golden Acres in Wynyard where she resided until her passing.
Anne was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Mary and Irene, husband Bill, stepdaughters Phyllis, Marie, and Grace, stepson Walter, and son-in-law Garth. She will be sadly missed by stepson George and his family, stepson Harold and his family, sons Jim (Heather – Jennifer and Heather), Bruce (Grant and Jessica), Robert, Martin (David and Cara), Bill (Iebi), and Lee (Chris), daughters Gerry (Leslie, Michelle, and Greg) and Shirley (Philip – Jon and Anthony), and numerous great grandchildren.
The funeral service was held at the Quill Lake Community Hall Friday June 10, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt (306-682-1622). Donations may be made in Anne’s name to Skate Canada Saskatchewan, the Alzheimer Society Of Saskatchewan, or a charity of your choice.
