YATES: Arthur (Art) Clarence Yates of Alexander, in his 87th year, passed away on December 15, 2007 in the Assiniboine Centre, after a brief illness. Art was born in Winnipeg on February 20, 1920 and was raised on the family farm north of Killarney where he attended Northcote School and helped on the family farm. In 1940, while working in Winnipeg, Art joined the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and served overseas during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. Art then farmed for a few years near his family’s farm, then moved to Brandon where he began his truck driving career with Unicume Storage, MacArthur’s and retiring in 1984 from Western Grocers. Art enjoyed travelling and camping, taking many trips to BC, Alberta and Ontario to visit friends and family. He also took a trip to England to see his brother and one to Belgium to visit friends. Art was very mechanical and enjoyed fixing lawn mowers, snow blowers and small engines for many people. He was an avid gardener and was always eager to plow gardens for neighbours every spring. Art is survived by his wife, Evelyn, her son, Ron Chabauty of BC and daughter, Cheryl Dando of Dauphin, sister, Christina Morris of Brandon, brothers, Reginald (Margie) of Schreiber, Ontario and Ted (Blythe) of Brandon, sisters-in-law, Vera of England, Alice of Hinton, Alberta, Marion of Schreiber, Ontario as well as brother-in-law, Russ Baxter of Schreiber, Ontario. Also surviving are numerous nephews and nieces. Art was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Tressia Yates, his first wife, Nancy, brothers, Cyril, Jack and Bert and sister, Betty. Funeral service was held in Alexander United Church on December 19, 2007 with Rev. John Nesbitt officiating. Interment took place in the Alexander Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Yates, Ron Morris, Bruce Black, Dennis Drummond, Doug Dando and Jason Dando. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion #3 acted as an Honour Guard.
ZYGMOND: Peacefully on June 15, 2007 at the Brandon Assiniboine Centre, Frank Zygmond passed away at the age of 77 years after a brief illness. Frank was born on January 11, 1930 and raised in St. Boniface, Manitoba, the only child of Katherine and Joseph Zygmond. He is predeceased by his father, Joseph Henry, April 7, 1980; his mother, Katherine, July 18, 1991; and his beloved wife, Olga, July 6, 2006. Frank will be sadly missed by his daughter, Cheryl, sons Michael (Tara) and Douglas, grandchildren Dustin, Daniel, Tiffany, Jessica and Jarred; great granddaughter Tyra, niece and goddaughter Cynthia and niece Barbara. Frank grew up in Winnipeg and then moved to Morden in 1950 to begin his career with Manitoba Hydro. He met Olga in Neepawa and they married on September 15, 1956. They moved to Brandon, and after a two-year stint in Thompson, settled in Brandon for the remainder of their lives. After 39 years of service with Manitoba Hydro, Frank retired from his position as Electrical Maintenance Superintendent in 1989. Aside from his career, he was very involved with volunteer organizations – most notably the Kiwanis Club. Frank was a founding member of the Brandon – Assiniboine chapter and was recently honored with a 35-year Legion of Honor certificate. From potato planting, to Meals on Wheels, to Red Nose – he was always actively involved in their initiatives. In his retirement years, Frank embraced two new hobbies, computing and collecting antiques, enjoying both past times immensely. A memorial service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332 – 8th Street on Thursday, June 21, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Raju Madanu officiating. Interment and reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, a donation may be made in Frank’s memory to a charity of your choice.
MAYNARD: Rona Lee Ruth Maynard, beloved wife of Marston Grindey and dear mother of Lana and Becki, passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, January 7, 2006 at the age of 53 years. A Funeral Service to celebrate Rona’s life will be held at the First Baptist Church, 3881 Park Avenue, on Friday, January 13, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Jim Rushton officiating. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. KALUSHKA: Victoria Kalushka, of Brandon, beloved widow of the late Maurice Kalushka, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at the age of 85 years. A Memorial Service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Monday, January 16, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with The Very Rev. Fr. Michael Skrumeda officiating. A private family interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. HOOPER: Edna Hooper, beloved mother of Jean, of Sprucewoods, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at Fairview Personal Care Home on Monday, January 9, 2006 at the age of 85 years. A Service of Remembrance will be held at St. Barbara’s Chapel, Shilo, MB on Friday, January 13, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. with Padre Dwayne Bos officiating.
