WHITE: Florence Elizabeth White, née Meadows, of Brandon passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 at the age of 91 years. Florence was born on May 11th, 1917 to Reginald Edward Meadows and Emily Florence Meadows, née Sherris, in the Roseneath district in the Municipality of Odanah, south of Minnedosa. Both of Flo's parents were also born in that district. Flo was the second child in a family of ten. She attended Roseneath Country School and she & her sister, Olive, attended the first day of classes when the school was rebuilt in 1922 after a fire destroyed the original school. The family attended St. Saviours Anglican Church where they were all christened including both parents. Florence stayed home helping on the farm and often helped neighbours with house work. In 1941, when her special friend was leaving for overseas to fight in the war, Flo went to Winnipeg to see him off then stayed in Winnipeg doing house work for a couple there. In the spring of 1942, Mrs. White from Forrest asked her to come and help look after the Forrest Service Station. Flo worked there for one and a half years and then went home to stay with her younger siblings while her mother and father and the two youngest moved to Brandon for the winter. In March of 1944, Flo started working as the bookkeeper for the Minnedosa Co-op. She stayed there until March 1st, 1946 when she left to marry Ray White who had returned from the war in August 1945. The family still has the tattered cut out from the paper. They were married on March 26th, 1946 in St Mary's Anglican Church in Brandon. They started farming six miles north of Forrest in the Glanton district. They continued to farm through both tough and good times until Ray's untimely death in December 1971. Flo continued to live on the farm until 1975 when she moved to the village of Forrest. Flo's eyesight became a problem and in 1989 she had to give up driving. In 1992, she moved to Green Acres Lodge in Brandon and then in 1996, she moved to a larger suite in Oddfellows Corner where she resided until her death. Flo and Ray had three sons, Bill, Doug and Ian and they shared many great times on the farm and at their cabin at Minnedosa Beach. Flo took an active part in the community. She was on the Forrest School Board, a charter and lifetime member of the Forrest Legion Auxiliary and was a founding member of the Elton Leisure Club which she took great pride in. WEECH: Alice Maude Weech of Brandon, with family members and loved ones by her side, died peacefully at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at the age of 96 years. Alice was born in Goderich, Ontario on August 12, 1911 to Ben and Jean Gray. Alice was the second of six children for the Gray family. As a young teenager, Alice along with her family, moved out "west" to Manitoba and settled on a farm in the Foxwarren area. Alice attended school there and completed Grade 11. Alice met and married Bert Weech in her early 20’s and moved to Moore Park, MB to start their new life together. They had six children: Allan, Earl, Ken, Jean, Glen, and Eldon. Bert was a carpenter and Alice was a homemaker. In 1944, Bert went overseas to fight with the Canadian Forces. Tragically, he was killed in action in Antwerp, Belgium leaving Alice widowed with six children to care for and raise. A short time after receiving the news about Bert, Alice was approached by the military to see if she would consider adopting out some of her children because it was thought that there was no way she could provide for the children on her own. Alice would have none of that. "Over my dead body" she told them. She picked up and moved to Brandon where she worked for the Co-op, took in boarders, and cared for her six children. Over the years, Alice had worked hard to carve out a life for her family. She has always been so very proud of all her family. Alice also somehow found time to be a member on the Co-op Board, and an original member on the Westoba Credit Union Board and helped to name it. She became the first female board member. Alice was also a long time member of Knox United Church, the Army and Navy, and the Royal Canadian Legion in Brandon. Alice also liked to travel with regular trips out to Alberta and B.C. to visit family, a trip overseas to visit the cemetery where Bert was buried, and other trips to Bermuda and Las Vegas. Alice is survived by her sons; Earl (Dorothy) Weech of Cranbrook, B.C.; Ken (Ellie) Weech of Sherwood Park, AB; Glen (Rose) Weech of Calgary, AB; and Eldon Weech of Kelowna, B.C. She is also survived by her sister Dorothy (Art) Harris of Neepawa, MB; sister-in-law Charlotte Gray of Brandon, son-in-law Robert (Rose) Whittington of Brandon, and daughter-in-law Marge Weech of Victoria, B.C. Alice is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Alice was predeceased by her husband Bert; son Allan of Victoria, B.C.; her daughter Jean Whittington of Brandon, MB; and grandson Doug of Cranbrook, B.C. She was also predeceased by parents Ben and Jean Gray; brothers Tom (Mabel), Roy, and George (Isla) Gray, and her sister Helen. Alice was recently predeceased by her special friend and companion, Orval Thompson of Brandon, MB. The Funeral Service for Alice was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. Reverend Laird Russell-Yearwood officiated. Interment took place at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Alice was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was very passionate about her family and friends. Alice loved to laugh and visit. She found comfort in her final days knowing that God was preparing a place for her in Heaven. Donations in memory of Alice may be made to the Brandon Health Centre Foundation, Palliative Care Unit, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.
