MUMBY: In loving memory of James Austin Mumby, who passed away suddenly at his home in his 78th year, on August 16, 2006. Austin, son of Ambrose & Eleanor Mumby, was raised on the family farm in Hayfield, Manitoba. He is survived by Anne, his loving wife of 54 years; daughter, Sharon and son-in-law, Brian Douglas; grandchildren
, Cathy, Lisa and Billy-Joe of Brandon as well as Laurie of Edmonton, Alberta and ten great grandchildren. Austin was predeceased by his daughter, Carol McPherson and "best friend", Pepper. In addition to his career as an engineer at the Brandon Mental Health Centre, Austin will be fondly remembered as a highly accomplished fabricator and competitor of model airplanes in his early years. Later, he became a miniature train enthusiast, creating memories shared with his daughters and granddaughters. Austin’s talents did in no way stop there! His hand crafted cabinetry, which adorns the family home, is the envy of all. Austin also had a knack for capturing the world around him on film and video. He will be missed and forever loved by his family. Friends are invited to join the family to celebrate Austin’s life with a simple service at the Mumby residence: 550 Percy Street, Brandon, Manitoba, on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. followed by interment at the Brandon Cemetery. MANTEI: Allan Edward Mantei passed away suddenly on August 5, 2006 at the age of 58, in Brandon, Manitoba. Allan is survived by his loving wife Karie and children, Bobbi, Dallas, Cindy, and David. Also survived by sisters Bunny (Utho) Steidle, Tillie Mitchell, Lorna Fiest, brothers Carl, Donald (Faye), Roy (Margaret), and Gerald (Diane) Mantei, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Allan was a farmer and rancher all his life, he will be missed and loved by all his family and friends. Funeral Services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 3101 Victoria Avenue, Brandon Manitoba, on Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 1:00 pm. Interment will take place at St. John's Cemetery, Outram, Saskatchewan on Friday, August 11, at 11:00 a.m.
MUELLER: Edelgard Mueller (Gawe) Jan 3, 1933 – Aug 17, 2007. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edelgard Mueller at Brandon Regional Health Centre on August 17, 2007 at the age of 74. Our mother, oma, sister, aunt and friend was born in Bochum, Germany on January 3, 1933 to Bruno and Emma Gawe. The oldest of six siblings, mom endured through tough circumstances – The Depression, World War II bombings, and post-war poverty. In 1950, through her uncle, she met Wilfred Mueller. The couple married in Bochum on May 30, 1952. Daughter Angelika was born 1955, followed by another daughter, Kornelia, in 1958. In 1960 Wilfred thought there would be more opportunities for his young family in Canada. He immigrated to Brandon, Manitoba in July 1960 to find a job and set up a home. Edelgard immigrated to Brandon with Angelika and Kornelia on January 27, 1962. After a long, stormy trip on the ship ‘Berlin’, they arrived in Halifax at Pier 21. It took another week to finally arrive in Brandon where Edelgard was re-united with her husband. Two more children completed the family. Marian was born in Brandon in 1963, and Wilfred in 1966. Mom was a homemaker. She was passionate about her cooking and baking. All her family and friends will have fond memories of her home-made soups, potato pancakes, pot roast and German desserts. She was an avid gardener. Her gardens grew fabulous veggies and her flowers were beautiful – especially her roses, lilies, clematis and peonies. Mom loved to travel. She traveled extensively in Canada and the United States. Even in her last year in failing health, she visited both coasts of Canada – Newfoundland and Labrador in the fall of 2006 and Victoria in the spring of 2007. Other destinations included Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Portugal, Tenerife, Mallorca, Canary Islands, Mexico, Cuba and Barbados. Mom enjoyed many cultural events – going to the Centennial Auditorium for concerts, going to Folklorama to visit various pavilions, and going to The Pas to join Angelika and her family for Trapper’s Festival were some of her favorites. Edelgard was pre-deceased by her husband Wilfred in 1978. She is survived by her four children. Angelika Bate (Kevin), Kornelia ‘Connie’ Delzer (Jerry), Marian Ramage (Daryl), and Wilf Mueller (Kim). She was thrilled to have 13 grandchildren: Naomi, Sean, Jason, Brianne, Mahaly, Stephen, Laurence, Hilary, Emily, Kelsey, Kiara, Blake and Gavin. Mom also leaves to mourn her extended family in Germany: brothers Werner Gawe (Roswita) and Bruno Gawe and Reiner Gawe (Regina) and her sisters Gudrun Gawe und Annegret Walter. Also, on the ‘Mueller side’ there are many in-laws. Berndt Mueller (Elfriede), Harald Mueller (Ruthilde), Anita Maintz (Kurt), Monika Lukaszewski (Rainer), as well as numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Edelgard is survived too by special friends in Brandon. Henry and Ursula Gerritzen, Gladys Cameron and Charlie Dougall. Also, Lisa and Siegfried Emmert of Kitchener, Ontario. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the palliative care floor at the Assiniboine Center for their kindness and dedicated care of our mother. Interment took place at Brandon Cemetery. Mr. Lawrence McInnes officiated. MOFFAT: Grant John Moffat was born on February 17, 1951 to John Robson (Jack) and Verna Moffat of Forrest. He attended Turriff Elementary School, which later became Forrest Elementary School. He graduated in 1969 from Elton Collegiate and then attended Assiniboine Community College and received his Bookkeeping Diploma in 1970. His first job was at Burns Meat Packing plant, working in the office and later obtained a job at Brandon Stockyards.
4-H was a large part of his life growing up and he was a member of the Forrest 4-H Swine and Beef Clubs. He loved being in the show ring with the animals that he had raised and trained to lead. He was a frequent winner in showmanship classes as well as public speaking competitions. His proficiency with the spoken word led him to be a talented writer for a variety of newspapers, and the various cattle association newsletters that he was an editor for. Over the past couple of years, he was interviewing people regarding their experiences with summer fairs and he was planning to write a book based on these conversations.
He started his cattle herd with a few Aberdeen Angus, but that soon changed to Charolais, a love affair that he had for 30 years. He traveled extensively across the Western provinces trying to find the perfect fit for his herd. He loved attending the fairs and Holmsyde Charolais was a frequent winner at them - the milk run being a favourite of his. He felt that the summer fairs were the most memorable and it gave him an opportunity to have many young people help him with the cattle and for many, it was their first experience in the show ring. Holmsyde Charolais was his life and it was with great sadness that he had a dispersal sale on December 19, 2004.
Photography started as a hobby, taking pictures of his cattle for sales catalogues and then it turned into a business. He was often asked to take family, wedding, and graduation pictures. He was regularly behind the camera at fairs, 4-H shows, and often stopped along the road to take a picture of something that caught his eye.
Retirement, if you could call it that in Grant’s case, did not really suit him very well, so he bought a blade sharpening business last summer and was just starting to build up his business when he disappeared.
Grant disappeared on August 18, 2006 and has not been heard from since. Grant’s sister, Janie Hale, her husband Ron and their family of, Shawn and Charlene, her husband Dave, and their children, Dylan and Delton are still praying for his safe return. However, at this time, the family would like to invite you to join them in celebrating his life at a Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, August 18, 2007 at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, in Brandon, MB at 10:00 a.m.
MORE: It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden death of Myrtle May (McBrien) More on July 26, 2007 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. She was born June 19, 1920 in Pierson, Manitoba to Bert and Mildred McBrien. She married Dad, Tom More, on October 10, 1942 and lived most of her married life at Regent, Manitoba. Mom worked with and supported Dad on the family farm. She was active in community activities in the Regent District for many years including the Women’s Institute and the Women’s Missionary Society. She had a strong faith and was a member of and took part in activities in the Regent and later the Elgin United Churches. Mom and Dad moved to Brandon in 1972 and continued to operate the family farm. Mom worked at Chez Cloth and Breslauer and Warren Jewellery Store. She loved the interaction with customers and staff. Mom and Dad enjoyed many trips to Hawaii, California, New York, Illinois and more recently Minnesota. Dad died in 1997; in 2001, Mom moved to Fairview. Here she enjoyed the friendship of her roommate Margaret Stouffer until Margaret’s death. Over the last few years, she loved having visits from her family and friends. Mom was always delighted to show everyone the wall of pictures of all of her family, and was especially proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family is so grateful to the staff on the 4th floor at Fairview who became like another family to her. Thank you to Dr. Colin Macfarlane for his many years of caring for Mom, and recently to Dr. Scott Blyth and Dr. Michael Davies. She is greatly missed by her family, daughter Diana (Larry) Love, Barry (Bev) More, grandchildren Jeff (Debbie), and Steve (Cindy) Love, Patricia (Blaine) Thomas, Barbie (David) MacLean, Karen, and Christopher More and great-grandchildren William, Lucas, Wade, Wyatt and Hailey. She is also survived by one sister Shirley Pippy, brother Laverne (Jean) McBrien and sister-in-law Doreen More as well as many nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held August 7th, 2007 at Brockie Donovan Funeral Chapel. Mona Franklin officiated. Interment took place at Rosewood Memorial Garden. Pallbearers were Martin More, Elton More, Greg More, Doug More, Craig Hammond and Larry Hammond. Soloist was Larry Thiessen. MINARY: Andrew Dennison (Denny). The family of Denny Minary regretfully and sadly announce the peaceful passing on August 01, 2007 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre with his family at his side. He was born on the family farm near Nesbitt, Manitoba on October 12, 1935 to Roy and Beryl Minary. Denny began his education at Bertha School and completed it in Nesbitt. Denny had a great love for his family, his music and the farm. He will be missed for his beautiful music on the piano, organ and keyboard. He started farming with his Dad and eventually took over the family farm. Denny was very proud in 1999 when we celebrated 100 years of Minarys on his farm. He also worked at Lynn Lake in the mines and as a brakeman for the C.P.R. Denny played for many dances with the Rocatones and later, Denny’s Trio. He made tapes and CDs and was very pleased to share them with family and friends. He loved nature and spent many hours walking along the Souris River which flowed through his land. He also spent many hours at genealogy and tracing the family tree and created a Minary Family Website for all the family to enjoy. Denny was a very kind and generous man who liked to help people in need. He was predeceased by his mother and father; infant sister Hazel Jane; brother-in-law Armand Godard, also Marlene’s family of Jim, Dale, Doug and Frank Butterfield and Mazie Haggerty. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Marlene; sister Donna (Ron Lowry); nieces Brenda, Patti and Pam, their husbands and families and numerous cousins; also Marlene’s families of Fern (Glen) Rae, June (Phil) Seddon, Marlene Butterfield, Jessie Butterfield, Bill Haggerty and close friends Isabel and Bill Tjaden. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, who are too numerous to mention. He also leaves many friends and neighbors who will miss him. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Patterson Family Cemetery, R.M. of Oakland. Family and friends are welcome. Fellowship at the Nesbitt Hall to follow the service. MAYO: Allan George Mayo, beloved husband of Joyce, of Brandon, Manitoba, passed away on July 19, 2007 at the Assiniboine Centre, with his family by his side. Allan was born at Heaslip, Manitoba at NW 16-6-19W on the family farm, September 15, 1936. He resided there until 1947 when he moved to Pipestone with his family. He started school at Riverside and completed his schooling in Pipestone. He moved to Brandon in 1955 where he met his wife Joyce Garden. They were married December 21, 1957 and would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this winter. When he was 16, Allan worked for Canada Paint, then moved to CPR Transport for almost 20 years. He received numerous safety awards. Allan was also employed with Good Roads, Modern Dairies and Beaver Lumber for the five years before he retired at age 65. Allan was an avid gardener. He enjoyed fishing, camping and playing cards with friends and family. He enjoyed relaxing and tending his lovely flowers in his back yard. Allan was predeceased by his parents Reg and Janet; mother-in-law and father-in-law Amy and James; sister Jean and brother Keith. He will be sadly missed by his wife Joyce and daughters Penny of Regina; Heather and George (Dimitri and Katarina) of Souris; Cindy and Harvey (Kelly and Kristy) of Brandon and Darlene and Scott (Samantha) of Indian Head; brothers Stuart and Evelyn of Brandon and Bruce and Bonnie of Abbotsford along with numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held July 23, 2007 at Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Brandon, Manitoba. MALCHUK: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Malchuk on June 26, 2007 in Brandon, MB. Jean was born in Horod, Manitoba. She leaves to mourn her daughter Beverly Hale and grandson Jordan Hale from Merritt, B.C.; son Darren and wife Stefanie Malchuk and their two children, Sierra and Brennan Malchuk, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Nick and Mary Guglick; sisters Anne, Mary, Margaret and brother, Mike. Prayers will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue, on Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. McQUEEN: The family of Dr. James D. McQueen of Brandon regretfully announces the passing of their dear father and grandfather after a brief illness on June 25th, 2007 at Brandon Regional Health Centre. James was born on March 4, 1922 in Wapella Saskatchewan to Dan and Blanche McQueen. He was predeceased by his wife Florence McQueen in August 2005 and his infant son Laird Ian in 1952. Dad leaves to mourn his four children, Glenys (husband Rafael Fuentes and son Emilio); Craig (wife Lecia and daughter Tasia); Bruce (wife Janet and children Chad and Caitlin); Lance (wife Susan and children Mary Catherine, Elizabeth, and Christian) as well as sister Margaret Preston of Moosomin, SK. and brother Daniel of Saskatoon, SK. and many nieces and nephews. Jim was raised on the family homestead in the Pipestone district of southeastern Saskatchewan where he excelled in baseball and track and field. During World War II Dad enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces beginning his training with the Army on Queen Charlotte Island but soon after transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as a wireless air gunner. During this period he met his soul mate and lifelong dance partner, Florence Phillipson. They married on July 28th 1945 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. After the war, Dad studied Optometry at the University of Toronto. Following his graduation, the couple and their two children, Glenys and Craig, moved to Brandon where he began his Optometric practice. Two other children, Bruce and Lance were born in Brandon shortly thereafter. Jim was very active in both the community and his profession during a career that spanned four decades. He served a term as President of the Manitoba Optometric Society and acted as Manitoba Representative to the Canadian Association of Optometrists. Dad was instrumental in acquiring doctorate status and recognition of Optometrists as professionals within the medical community in Canada. He also was active in Rotary International, serving a term as the local President and delegate to numerous Rotary International conferences. During his tenure with Rotary, Jim and Florence were catalysts in the formation of the Brandon chapter of the women’s Inner Wheel organization within Rotary. Jim also as a fervent advocate of the Rotary International Educational Exchange programs. As a member of Toastmasters International, Dad enjoyed many hours honing his skills as a public speaker and exercising his rapier like wit. He was also a founding member of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum at Brandon Airport where he indulged his passion for locating and restoring World War II aircraft. Dad’s free time was spent following his personal hobbies and interests: including archaeology; Scottish history; dancing; travelling; woodworking; drawing; and enjoying his yard work. Mom and Dad spent many winters in Mesa, Arizona developing a group of very close friends from around North America. Other destinations included the British Isles, Hawaii, numerous trips to Mexico, and a cruise of the Panama Canal. Dad was renowned for his sense of humour, his honesty and integrity, his compassion for his fellow man, and his lifelong interest in education. In essence: a gentleman in the truest sense. A memorial service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. MARGETTS,"CYRIL" 1914 - 2007. At the going down of the sun on Tuesday, June 19, 2007, Cyril passed into eternal rest at the Wawanesa Health Centre at the age of 93 years. Cyril was born in Wales, U.K. on January 25, 1914 to Hubert and Gertrude (née James). Their family of three boys, Bill, Cyril and Trevor, arrived in Canada during the fall of 1926 and took up residence on NW 18-6-19 in the Riverside district. Following his mother’s passing in 1927, his father and younger brother, Trevor, returned to Wales in 1931. Cyril and brother, Bill, remained in Canada. Cyril entered the Canadian Army at the start of World War II serving in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, having gone in to France on "D"- Day. He returned to Canada in December 1945 via the "Queen Mary" and New York City. In 1946, he married Agnes Blodgett of the Riverside district where they farmed until 1955. He then started municipal road building and maintenance work for several municipalities, retiring from the R.M. of Strathcona in 1980. In 1981, Dad and Mum moved back to Minto, residing there until 2003. During his retirement, he enjoyed converting a school bus to a camper, which they used for many fishing and exploring trips around Manitoba. He loved hunting, snowmobiling and picking berries in the Riverside Valley north of Minto. He always looked forward to the arrival of new calves each January. In 1992, Dad and Mum enjoyed a bus trip to Alaska on the 50th Anniversary of the construction of the Alaska Highway during World War II. In 1994, they travelled to Wales to visit Dad’s brother, Trevor and family. They visited many of the places Dad knew as a young boy. In 2003, because of health reasons, they sold their home in Minto and moved to Westview Lodge in Boissevain. In March of 2007, because of Dad’s health, they moved to the Wawanesa Health Centre. Cyril was predeceased by his parents and both brothers. He is survived by his wife Agnes; his son Murray, wife Brenda (née Tucker) and their sons Derek and Ryan; son Hugh, wife Sandra (née Tucker) and many nieces and nephews. His Funeral Service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. Interment followed at the Minto Cemetery.
