DODD: Enid Muriel Dodd (Ross) passed away suddenly on Monday, July 17, 2006 in Brandon. Enid was born in Elgin, Manitoba on May 6, 1926 and farmed with husband Lloyd till 1953. Lloyd and Enid had three sons, Doug and twins, Allan and Murray. After Lloyd’s passing in 1953, Enid moved to Brandon to raise her boys. During those years, Enid became a "Mom" to many of her sons’ friends. In 1974, Enid married William "Buff" Dodd and became a wonderful stepmother to Buff’s three children, Shane, Donna and Loree. Enid’s pride and joy were her family, especially her 14 grandchildren
and four great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. Another of Enid’s life joys was Clear Lake. Enid spent many happy summers in the old campground and many hours walking and visiting throughout the neighbourhood. Enid is survived by husband, William (Buff) Dodd, sons Doug (Joan) Ross, Allan (Sally) Ross, Murray (Jackie) Ross, stepson Shane (Lorna) Dodd, stepdaughters Donna Dodd and Loree (Rick) Osudar; sister, Marlene (Deb) Mealy, brother, Bob (Grace) Bell; grandchildren: Mark Ross, Jeff (Jen) Ross, Jordan Ross and Katherine Jeroski, Grady Manson, Canda Manson, Amber Osudar, Wade Osudar, Blake Dodd, Kurtis Dodd, Julie Titus, Jon Titus, Geoff Titus; great grandchildren: Haidyn Ross, Caleb Ross, Easton Manson-Lacey and Ella Titus; brothers-in-law Gord Dodd, Cecil (Mary) Ross and Ken (Chris) Ross and sister-in-law Evelyn Bell. Enid is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Enid was predeceased by: husband Lloyd Ross, father Russell Bell, mother Muriel Bell, brother Howard Bell, sister Doree Grant, brother-in-law Lawrence Grant and sister-in-law Marion Dodd. DICKSON, Edith Lovina: Peacefully on September 17, 2007 at the age of 95, Edith Dickson passed away at the Fairview Home in Brandon, Manitoba. She was pre-deceased by her first husband, William Riddick, in 1966; her second husband, William (Bill) Dickson, in 1979; her parents; three sisters – Alma, Irene and Alice; three brothers – Ed, Lorne and Earl; and her nephew Terry McNaughton. Edith is survived by her sister, Jean; two step-sons – Ian (Donna) and Neil (Lynda) Dickson; six Dickson grandsons – Scott, Eric (Kelly), Tim (Julia), Blaine (Sue), Shawn (Annmarie) and Neil JR; one Dickson granddaughter – Holly (Andrew); and seven Dickson great grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by her nieces Linda Conner, Fay Spilker and Donna Campbell, and her nephews Neil and David Bradley. Edith was born on March 23, 1912 in the R.M. of Hamiota, daughter of Roland and Lovina Middleton. Raised in the Hamiota area, she had fond memories of her childhood days and often recalled her time together with family and friends in her younger years. She married William Riddick in 1931 and lived with him in Rivers, MB. Following his death, Edith worked as a housekeeper at which time she met and married Bill Dickson. The Dickson family welcomed her with open arms as she readily accepted her much needed role of wife, companion and homemaker to Bill. They travelled often together, visiting family and friends in numerous locations both in and out of Canada. Edith particularly enjoyed her memories of her visits to Scotland and the Dickson clan abroad. Edith and Bill lived in Brandon, and following his death she moved to the Lion’s Manor where she had many friends and acquaintances in this senior’s residence. She enjoyed a particularly close friendship with Mrs. Ethel Morrison. Edith will be remembered as a person who gave selflessly to others. Her love of music and the enjoyment she received from playing her violin with other musicians will be remembered by many. Her volunteer services as part of the entertainment program at Fairview Home and her time as a resident there were very special. In accordance with Edith’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family interment at the Marney Cemetery
in Cardale, MB will be held in advance of the memorial service on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, Brandon MB, with Rev. Paul Sakasov of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church officiating. The family wishes to thank the staff at Fairview Home, and in particular the staff of the 4th floor, for their care and kindness to Edith. Together with her volunteer time, her involvement with Fairview spanned more than thirty years. DAVIS: Ethel May Davis passed away at the age of 72 on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. She is the beloved wife of Harry Davis, mother of four children - three girls Caroline (Pat), Rose (Dennis) and Kathy and one son, Harry (Leslie). She is loved by nieces, nephews, grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Shannon McCarthy of Central United Church officiating. Interment will take place at the Brandon Cemetery. Lunch will follow at the George Brockie Fellowship Centre (south side of Brockie Donovan). DRUWE, John Leon: It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather who passed away suddenly in Brandon on Sunday, August 12, 2007. John will be lovingly remembered by his children: Monica (Richard) Chomos, Jacquie (Jim) Stuart, Duane (Shannon) Druwe and Melissa (Austin) May. His grandchildren: Neil (Ellie) Chomos, Nicole (Ken) Homeniuk, Erin (Mark) Toth, Everett Elaina and Eden Stuart, Nathan, Breanne and Ryan Druwe, Kaitlyn and Nolan May; great-grandchildren Hayden and Shay-Lynn Homeniuk and Hailey Chomos, his brother Charles (Marie) Druwe, sister-in-law Bertha Moreau, brother-in-law Edward (Olga) Helman and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Victor and Marie, his sons Neil and Barry, his wife Marguerite and sister Jeanne Gilliard. John was born on August 5, 1921 in Findlay, Manitoba. He grew up on the farm there and went to school in Grande Clairiere. His father passed away when John was 13 and as the oldest son, he took on the responsibility of running the farm. In 1943, he married Marguerite Helman. They bought a general store and moved to Fertile, SK in 1947. In 1950, tragedy struck when the store burned down and their two sons perished. The following year, they moved to Brandon, MB. John worked at John Deere and Johnson’s Hardware until he decided to enroll in the psychiatric nursing course at the Brandon Mental Hospital. He graduated in 1956 and worked there until his retirement in 1986. John was a faithful member of St. Augustine’s Church for 56 years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. His devotion to his family and friends was an integral part of his life. He was an avid gardener and his family, friends and neighbors reaped the benefits of his green thumb. Sports played a big part in his life. In their younger years, he and Marguerite curled and bowled. Later in life he took up bowling again and was introduced to the joys of golf which became his passion. Prayers were held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Thursday, August 16, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church on Friday, August 17, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Dominic Yuen as Celebrant. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Francis Gilliard, Cyril Druwe, Wade Gilliard, Larry Martel, Ed Boulanger and Andy Boulanger. Honorary Pallbearers were Maurice Boulanger and Daniel Gilliard. DUDDING: Mrs. Irene Blanche Dudding of Brandon, passed away at her residence, Hillcrest Place, on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at the age of 90 years. Irene is survived by her son Glenn (Muriel) Dudding of Lloydminster, AB and daughters Arlene Rusk of Saskatoon, SK and Sandra Boehlke of Brandon, MB. Also surviving are brothers Fred (Betty) Mansfield of Brandon, and John (Jopi) Mansfield of Saskatoon. There are eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Irene was predeceased by her daughter and son-in-law, Grace and Earl McLaughlin and her brother Gordon Mansfield. The family is most grateful to Dr. M. Egan and the nurses and caregivers of Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home. At Irene’s request, there will be a private family graveside service. If friends desire, donations in memory of Irene may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
DEROUIN: Charles Alexander "Charlie" Derouin passed away peacefully on Friday, April 27, 2007 at Rideau Park Personal Care Home. Dad was born in Biggar, Saskatchewan on June 8, 1921, the eldest son of Arthur and Mabel Dorouin. He received his education in Biggar before going to work for Hock and Packer as a Butcher’s assistant. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he enlisted in the military and was sent overseas, returning to Saskatchewan at the end of the war, and started his 37-year career with CP Rail. Dad worked in the running trade as a Brakeman, retiring in 1981 as Conductor on The Canadian Passenger train, something he was very proud of. Dad liked to fish and always had a few fish stories to tell. When his family was young and growing, he and Mum spent time tending a large garden, supplying the neighborhood with tomatoes and cucumbers. Dad spent many hours playing Cribbage and Rummy and when her first retired, anyone that visited had to have a game. He was a Husband, Father and Grandfather and was very proud of his eight children and many grandchildren. A visit from his family always thrilled him, especially in the past number of years that he was in the nursing home. He was often heard to say, "Heaven can wait, this is Paradise," whenever one of his boys visited from afar. The last seven and a half years without Florrie, his wife of 54 years, were the hardest for him. Dad is survived by his eight children: Jim (Joanne), Fort St. John, BC, Don (Dianne Barnes), Spruce Grove, AB, Gord (Beverly), Medicine Hat, AB, Betty (Roy) Demers, Brandon, Wendy (Harvey) Wood, Rivers, Bob (Dianna), Edmonton, AB, Doug (Michelle) Brandon, and Greg (Lori), Campbell River, BC. Grandchildren: Michael (Liza), Rob (Stacy) and Geoff (Cindy Carlson) Derouin, Donna (Trent) Brown, Lisa (Lyle) Bryant, Michelle Derouin, Marc (Stacy) Derouin, Brent (Janice) Demers, Brad (Janna) Demers, Jason, Rick, Suzanne and Jared Wood, Katrina Derouin, Robert Medd, Brittany and Stephanie Derouin, Paige and Hannah Derouin, plus 13 great grandchildren. Dad is also survived by his sisters, Noreen and Muriel Cey of Saskatoon, brother Harry Derouin of Langley, BC, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Mabel Derouin, wife Florence (nee McKinnon), brother Vince Derouin, many brothers and sisters-in-law, as well as nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Glenna Beauchamp of the Rivers United Church officiating. A private family interment will take place at the Arrow River Cemetery. Urn Bearer will be his daughter, Wendy Wood. Donations in memory of Charlie may be made to a charity of choice.
DENBOW, ALLAN LYLE, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on March 2, 2007 at the age of 75. He was born in Alexander, Manitoba on February 11, 1932, the third child of Robert and Elspeth (Elsie) Denbow and was raised and educated in Brandon. He attended Park, Earl Oxford, Central and Brandon Collegiate Institute schools. He sang in the St. Paul’s Junior Boys Choir in his young years and participated in 3 Operettas. Allan was a long time member of the Y.M.C.A. all through his teen years and achieved his Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion, Instructors Certificates in Swimming, Life Saving, Skin and Scuba Diving. He also belonged to the Leader Core at the Y.M.C.A. and enjoyed his volunteer instructing in these areas for many years. He also taught swimming and scuba at the Y.M.C.A. He became a Life Guard at the 16th Street Beach at the age of 16 for 5 years in Brandon. He also life guarded at Clear Lake Beach and taught swimming there for 2 years. In 1960, he was the senior life guard at Curran Park. Allan took up wrestling and competed in many wrestling matches in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg. Allan trained and became an instructor in St. John’s Ambulance First Aid/CPR work. He spent over 25 years doing rescue work and commercial diving for the Western Manitoba region and belonged to the Manitoba Underwater Council. He taught Scuba Diving at the Army Cadet Camp at Clear Lake in 1961 and at Shilo in 1962-63. Allan, was for many years, one of the few people in Western Manitoba to be called by the R.C.M.P. to recover drowning victims. Out of 120 drownings, he recovered 108. Allan was called upon to do a variety of commercial diving for lost items, welding in farmer’s dugouts and water towers. He also belonged to the Red Cross of Manitoba for which he donated 85 pints of blood and received an Honorarium from the Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba. He took great pride when Debbie became certified along with him. From 1952-1962, Allan was employed as a boiler maker for Babcock, Wilcox, Goldie and McCullough and worked in Alaska and various places throughout Canada. In 1959, he married Elspeth English of Harding, Manitoba. They moved to Winnipeg in their first year and in 1960, they moved back to Brandon. He took a 6-week course at the Brandon Armories in military Survival in 1961. He also worked for a time for Pittsburgh Paint and Glass Co. in Brandon. In 1962, Allan was employed by the City of Brandon as a Firefighter working up to Acting Lieutenant until his heart attack and back surgery forced him to leave the work he loved in 1984. During these years, he completed Level I, II & III of the Manitoba Fire College Training Program (1982) and was a member of the Firefighters Union. He loved to participate in the Virden Firefighters Rodeos which he enjoyed for 10 years. Allan loved his rescue work. It was with great pride that he helped to start and train fellow firefighters to begin the Search and Rescue team for the Brandon Fire Department. He received the Governor General’s Fire Service Exemplary Medal in 1987 and in 2006, the Provincial Service Medal. Allan was a member of the Brandon Wildlife Association for many years. He loved to hunt and took many trophy awards for his antlers. He took up snowmobiling along with his family in 1977. He belonged to both the Brandon Snogoers Club and Snowman of Manitoba taking an active part in the clubs as a member and serving on the Boards for over 15 years. He received the Don Woods trophy for community service work. In later years he became an avid golfer and was a member of the Brandon Golf Club where he got a hole-in-one. He spent many hours golf at Brandon, Sandy Lake, Clear Lake, Neepawa, Arizona and Texas. For over 10 years, Allan especially enjoyed golf in the Tamarack Tournaments at Clear Lake with special friends Lou Vermette, Peter Goshulak and Carl Golletz. He spent over 13 years taking his family camping and boating. He especially enjoyed scuba diving and going with his daughter. In 1980, along with his son Darcy, Al took great pride in building the family cottage at Grey Owl Estates. It was here that he enjoyed spending happy hours with family, good friends and neighbors. Allan was a 40-year member of the Army and Navy Veterans Club, Unit #10. He was a past member of the #3 Royal Canadian Legion. He played in dart leagues and participated in many pool tournaments. In latter years, he and his wife traveled throughout Canada and the U.S., took 3 cruises and visited Hawaii, Arizona, Branson, Vancouver, Mexico and Cuba. From 1997-2007, Allan and Elspeth spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona and Weslaco, Texas. They enjoyed making many new friends and sharing wonderfully good times in the places they ventured to. He was an extremely generous person to all who knew him. He loved to make "fancy sandwiches", pickled eggs, nuts and bolts, smoked meats and special recipes for anyone who asked. Allan was a "true friend" to many and felt his integrity was the most important thing he had. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 48 years Elspeth, daughter Debbie (Wpg.), son Darcy (Bdn.), grandson Brad. Also surviving are his brother Bill (Marie) Denbow (Bdn.), sister Yvonne (Norm) Mitchell (Wpg.), sister Irene (Jim) Crang, (Shilo), brother Jack Denbow (Burnaby. B.C.), mother-in-law Clara English, brother-in-law Elwood (Lynne) English (Bdn.), cousins Bill (Vivian) Hales and Keith (Dorothy) Grummett of Brandon. There are many nieces and nephews and other cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Denbow (1976), and his mother Elspeth (Elsie) Denbow in 2000. Honorary Pallbearers were: Bill & Vivian Hales, Dale & Lynda Kaymann, Russ & Marj Roney, Al Dunham & Margaret Wedgewood, Garry & Dianne Little and Donna Cayer. Thank you to the Army & Navy Honour Guard, and Brockie-Donovan Chapel for their kindness. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, March 7th, 2007 at Brockie Donovan Funeral Chapel. DUNKLEY: Frederick Charles passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on January 20, 2007, after a strong will to live helped him through many incredible recoveries. Fred was born on July 12, 1940 at Burnside Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. He was raised in Timmons, ON, Eldersley, SK and the Florentine District, SK where he completed his schooling. This is where he met the love of his life, Margaret, to whom he was married for 46 years. Together they had six children. Fred and his family lived in the Florentine District then in Yorkton, SK, and finally moved to Brandon, MB where he resided until his passing. Fred worked all his life; at first doing various jobs, then enjoying a 36-year career at Perth’s Services. Fred will be forever loved and remembered for his passion for life, always enjoying the company of those around him. He was fond of dancing, swimming, music, golf, Wheat King games, afternoon coffee, weekend trips to Winnipeg and Minot, going to the lake, and his annual two week family vacations. What Fred enjoyed most were the weekly Sunday family gatherings. This is where many memories were made including suppers at home and picnics or barbecues in the backyard, and of course the friendly competition of games; favorites being UNO, croquet and street hockey. He will be greatly missed by his wife Margaret, son Ken (Sandra), grandchildren Chris, Michelle, step granddaughters Chellsey, Bailey, and great step granddaughter Hannah; son Brad (Rilla), granddaughters Amanda, Alicia; daughter Linda (John), grandchildren Eric, Nicole, Keith, Calvin, Brett; daughter Cheryl (Dennis); son Kelly (Michele), granddaughter Courtney; daughter Melissa; his beloved mother Myrle; brother-in-law Raymond (Rachel), brother-in-law John (Val); sister-in-law Mary (Chuck); aunts, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends. He will be reunited with his father Albert; half brother Delbert; mother-in-law Mary; father-in-law Martin; step mother-in-law Agnes; sister-in-law Helen who have predeceased him. Prayers were held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service was held at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Chris Dunkley, Eric Van Santen, Robert Haller, Darrell Boghean, Orest Solomon and Tim Adolphe. Donations in memory of Fred may be made to the Kidney Foundation, 203-42 McTavish Ave. East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B2. Thanks to the BRHC staff and Emergency services for the care and compassion given to Fred.
