BROWN: Marlene Mabel Brown (nee Massey) of Brandon, Manitoba, was born at Brandon General Hospital on April 27, 1948. She passed away suddenly at Brandon General Hospital on Friday, August 8, 2008. In her infancy her family lived at Shiloh, and at the age of three she contracted polio. Later, after her recovery, she moved to Clear Lake, then Neepawa and finally in 1954 to the farm at Kelwood with her parents and little brother. She started Grade 1 that September at Glenellen School. At age 12 she had surgery to correct the effects of the polio at Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg. She attended high school in Glenella and Kelwood and graduated with Grade 12 in 1966. From 1966 to 1969 she attended Full Gospel Bible Institute in Eston, Saskatchewan. She took secretarial training at Assiniboine Community College and then worked for the CNIB from 1970 to 1974. In 1973 she married Mel Brown of Chater, and they began a career in dairy farming that lasted until retirement in 1996. Mel and Marlene loved traveling and took many opportunities to enjoy this wonderful pastime. Marlene got involved with the church in Glenella at 14 years of age with encouragement from Lydia Williams. Her faith was a mainstay in her life from that time on, and she drew comfort from it to the very end. She cared deeply for her parents and looked after them faithfully, with Mel’s help, in their declining years. She maintained a close bond with her brother and his family, and took special interest in her niece and nephew and their partners. She had a sweet gentle spirit and a kindly heart, and her generosity knew no bounds to all who knew and loved her well. Marlene is survived by her loving husband Mel Brown; mother Mabel Massey; brother Bill Massey (Dorothy Braun); children Eryn (Lisa) and Leslie (Adam); sister Barbara Sanders (Jim); children Don, Kaitlin and Dianna. Donations may be made in Marlene’s name to a charity of your choice. Messages of condolence may be placed at www.brockiedonovan.com.

Goodnight, dear sister, sleep and take your rest.

Lay down your head upon your Saviour’s breast.

We love you well, but Jesus loves you best,

Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.

BROWN (BONK): Sadly the passing of Peggy Brown occurred on August 5, 2008 in her 87th year at her residence at Fairview Personal Care Home. Peggy was born on August 24,1921 in Nottingham, England, the first born child of Arthur and Beatrice Connell. Peggy was predeceased by her husbands James Bonk in 1967 and Reuben Brown in 1992. She also was predeceased by her beloved son David, who died accidentally at the age of 7 years in 1951. Left to mourn Peggy’s passing are her daughter Glenys Kelly (Bob) of San Juan Island, Washington and grandson Ryan ( Kayleen) of Chino, California and their children Bobby and Rory. Peggy will be also greatly missed by her son Bruce and daughter-in-law Katherine Bonk of Brandon and grandchildren Lesya Oldcorn (Malcolm) of Virden, MB, David (Lane)of Bakersfield, California and Julie of Brandon. Her only sibling Glenys Groethe of Seattle, Washington also suddenly passed away on August 6, 2008, less than a day after Peggy. She received her schooling in England and carried throughout her life a great love of learning with a particular interest in history and literature. She often talked about her happy childhood times with her sister, Glenys. During World War II Peggy met and married James Bonk and came to Canada in 1946. She began work at Chrest Dry Cleaners and was a well-known character in the shop for 25 years. She loved to sing and act and was in much demand for amateur theatre productions. Upon marriage to Reuben in 1970, Peggy resided at the Canadian Army base in Lahr, Germany and travelled throughout Europe before retiring to Surrey, BC. Upon Reuben’s untimely death, Peggy returned to Brandon in 1992 to be closer to her son and his family. Peggy loved life, lived large and was a joy to be around. Her loving nature and fun spirit endeared her to all. Her children and grandchildren will miss her great sense of humour and her totally unconditional love and support. Peggy’s faith was constant and she was absolutely certain that upon her death she would join her deceased loved ones. One of her last requests was that we thank the Fairview staff on the fourth floor for all their kindness, loving care and professionalism. To Peggy, the staff were more than just caregivers - they were great friends. The family truly appreciated that our mother’s last few years were lived in such dignity and comfort. Special thanks to Reverend John Dolloff of St. Mary’s Anglican Church for his comforting visits to Mom and the beautiful graveside service on August 12. Thanks also to Shawn Wintle of Brockie-Donovan for his help and guidance and to our many friends and neighbours for their kind expressions of sympathy. Peggy was the world’s greatest animal lover and if friends so desire we know that she would appreciate donations to Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 7M6.

Love knows not its own depth until the hour of parting. (Khalil Gibran)
