The Hon. Dr. George F.G. Stanley

The death of The Hon. Dr. George F.G. Stanley C.C., C.D., K.St.J., D.Phil., F.R.S.C., F.R.Hist.S., age 95 of Sackville occurred on Friday, September 13, 2002.
Born in Calgary, AB on July 6, 1907, he was the son of the late John and Della (Lillywhite) Stanley.
A Rhodes Scholar from Alberta and a graduate of Oxford University, Dr. Stanley had an extensive career as an educator, which began at Mount Allison in 1936. During World War II, he served as an infantry-training officer at Fredericton before proceeding overseas to the Historical Section at the Canadian Army Headquarters in London. Discharged as Lt. Col. in January 1947, he joined the faculty at UBC and became the first full-time professor of Canadian history in Canada. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship before taking up a position at the Royal military College in Kingston, ON. He became Head of the History Department and served as RMC’s first Dean of Arts from 1962 to 1969. After twenty years at RMC, Stanley returned to Mt. Allison to set up the first undergraduate programme in Canadian Studies at a Canadian university.
Dr. Stanley was the author/editor of 18 books and countless articles and book reviews. His Birth of Western Canada, Canada’s Soldiers and Louis Riel are still regarded as seminal works. He was extensively involved with the Ontario Historic Sites Board during its first ten years, and served as President of the Canadian Historical Association, and member of the Commission de Planification Académique de l’Université de Moncton, the Federal Government Advisory Board on Canadian military Colleges, and the Advisory Board of the Canadian War Museum. He was also one-time President of St. John Ambulance NB Council.
Dr. Stanley had a life-long interest in the military. He was a New Brunswick Ranger, Honorary Colonel of the 1RNBR, and actively involved in the 8th Canadian Hussars Regimental Association and the NB Army Cadet League. At 85, he is believed to have been the oldest Canadian to receive the CD decoration.
Dr. Stanley received numerous honours in recognition of his academic and public service contributions. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (receiving their Tyrrell Medal for history in 1957), Fellow of the Company of military Historians, Fellow of the Heraldry Society of Canada, and corresponding member of the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française. International Rotary made him a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a Companion of the Order of Canada and the recipient of 12 honorary degrees.
From 1982 to 1987, Dr. Stanley was Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of New Brunswick and hosted six members of the Royal Family and His Holiness The Pope. He is still best remembered by Canadians for his design of the Red Maple Leaf Canadian Flag.
Dr. Stanley leaves to mourn, Ruth, his wife of 56 years; 3 daughters, Della M.M. (Thomas Cromwell) Stanley of Bedford, NS, Marietta Stanley of Kelowna, BC and Laurie C.C. (John Blackwell) Stanley-Blackwell of Antigonish, NS; 2 grandchildren, Thomas Cromwell and Ruth Stanley-Blackwell; 2 cousins, Elizabeth Sullivan of Windsor, ON and Doreen Ross of Saskatoon, SK.
The remains are resting at the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville (364-1300) with visitation Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Sackville on Monday, September 16, 2002 at 2 PM, Rev. Father Kevin Stockall officiating. Burial in the Sackville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Jack O'Brien
The death of Jack O'Brien, age 53, of Dorchester, NB, occurred at the Moncton City Hospital on Monday, September 16, 2002, following a brief illness.
Born in Moncton, he was a son of the late Jack and Mary (Robichaud) O'Brien. Jack was a boilermaker for CN for 32 years. He was a quiet, kind, and loving man.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Babara (Hogg) Lewis, 2 sons, Sheldon and Aaron, both of Dorchester, 1 step-son Graham (Nancy) Lewis, Riverview, 5 stepdaughters; Lesley (René) Cormier, Janice (George) Cormier, both of Memramcook, Kathy (Roland) Rossignol, Plaster Rock, Tracey (Ed) Lewis, Memramcook, and Collen Lewis of Calgary. Jack is also survived by 5 brothers; Dennis, Dorchester, David (Wendy), Manning, Sackville, Jeff, Dorchester, and Kevin, Ontario, and 2 sisters; Heather (Reg) Richard, Sackville, and Candice (Mike) Mollins, Moncton.
The remains are in care of the Jones Funeral Homes, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, NB. A private family service is being held at a future date.
Mabel Murray
The death of Mabel Murray, age 93, of Murray Corner and formerly of Baie Verte occurred at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Saturday, September 14, 2002.
Born in Little Shemogue, she was a daughter of the late John and Celia (Black) Simpson. She was a member of the Baie Verte Senior Citizens, and a member of the St. James United Church, Baie Verte, NB.
She will be sadly missed by her 4 sons; Lyman (Loella), Little Shemogue, John (Alice) and Lynn (Deidra) both of Mt. Uniacke, NS, and Tom (Peggy) of Baie Verte; 3 daughters, Hazel Sprague , St. John, NB, Peggy Fitzpatrick, Moncton and Pauline (Edward) Smallwood of Murray Corner, 28 Grandchildren, 39 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great Great Grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband Claude in 1978, daughter Dorothy in 1961, sisters Sarah & Eugene, brother Charles, and 3 grandchildren
The remains are resting at the Jones Funeral Home, 3 Main St., Port Elgin (364-1300) with visitation on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at 2 PM from the St. James United Church, Baie Verte, Rev. Jay Ettinger officiating. Burial in the Fernwood Cemetery, Port Elgin.
Doris Chapman
The death of Doris Chapman, age 68, wife of Harris Chapman, of Burlington, ON, occurred at the Moncton City Hospital following a brief illness on Sunday, September 15, 2002.
Born in Midgic, she was a daughter of the Amy (Cole) Hicks and the late Elmer Hicks.
Doris will be sadly missed by her husband of 50 years, Harris of Burlington, ON, her mother Amy Hicks of Amherst, NS, a son Tom (Ellen) of Dallas, Texas, a daughter, Doreen (Joseph) Bertoli of Burlington, ON, a brother Russell Hicks, Brantford, ON; 3 sisters, Madeline Davis, Oakville, ON, Nettie (Doug) Beaton, Amherst, NS and Arvela (Jerry) Cormier, Lorneville, NS and 4 grandchildren.
The remains have been forwarded for cremation. A memorial service will be held at St. Ann's Anglican Church, Westcock on Thursday, September 19, 2002 at 11 AM, Rev. Father Kevin Stockall officiating. Burial in the Four Corner's Cemetery. In lieu of Flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Marie Cameron
The death of Marie Cameron, age 59, of Dorchester, occurred at the Moncton City Hospital on Sunday, September 29, 2002.
Born in Salisbury she was a daughter of Grace (Lewis) and the late Alvin Lewis.
Marie is survived by a special friend Leonard Snowdon, Dorchester, her mother Grace of Sackville, former husband Victor Cameron, Dorchester, a son Nelson, Saint John, NB; 2 daughters, Debbie Melanson, Sackville and Rose , Dorchester; 7 sisters, Jean, Betty, Peggy, Linda, Edith, Elsie and Madeline and 2 brothers, Robert and Roy. She was predeceased by her father and a sister Emily.
The remains are resting at the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville (364-1300) with visitation Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, October 3, 2002 at 11 AM, Rev. Rick Marsters officiating. Burial in the Westcock Cemetery.
Grace Beatrice Wright
January 16, 1905 - October 17, 2002
The death of Grace Beatrice Wright, age 97, of Sackville, occurred at the Drew Nursing Home on Thursday, October 17, 2002.
Born in Buckingham, Quebec, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Louisa (MacArthur) Mousseau. She was a member of the Sackville Art Association, UCW and the Once In A While Club.
Grace is survived by one son, Jamie (Barbara) of Sackville, 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband James.
There will be no visitation or memorial service at this time. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are in care of Jones Funeral Home, Sackville.
Aletha Eleanor (Sprague) Allen
1905 - 2003
The death of Aletha Eleanor (Sprague) Allen occurred at the Westford Nursing Home on Friday, March 7, 2003. Born July 16, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Joseph & Grace (Bugley) Sprague.
She was a tailor by trade, a stay at home Mum and in later years, with her husband, Copp, operated a grocery store in Port Elgin. She was a former member of the Rebecca Lodge, East Westmorland Senior Citizens, and an adherent of Trinity United Church, Port Elgin.
She is survived by four sons, Gordon (Corinne ) of Moncton, NB; Cecil (Mina) of Truro, N.S.; Albert (Bud) of Coburg, NB, and William (Sharon) of Etobicoke,Ont; two daughters, Betty Stright of Murray Corner and Peggy Goodwin of Port Elgin; one brother Pete (Louise) of Ontario; 29 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Aletha was predeceased by her husband Copp in 1985, by a daughter, Marjorie Goodwin; brothers Bob, Leslie, Dick, Lloyd, Ira, Jim & Vernon; sisters Vona Osborne, Dora Sprague, Olive McGlashing & Hilda Goodwin, and three grandchildren, Boyd, Blair & Bonnie Allen.
Cremation has taken place and visiting hours will be held at Jones Funeral Home, 3 West Main St., Port Elgin (364-1300) on Monday, March 10, 2003 from 7 - 9 PM . A Memorial service will be held at Jones Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at 2:00 PM., Rev. Jay Ettinger officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westford Nursing Home or the Charity of donor’s choice.
