William Boyle Sawdon
1917 - 2001
William Boyle Sawdon, one of this community's most respected citizens, passed away at the George Dumont Hospital in Moncton on Saturday morning, March 3, 2001 as a result of kidney failure. He was 83.
Mr. Sawdon was owner_publisher of the Sackville Tribune Press for 25 years following wartime service with the Canadian Army.
Born in Mount Stewart, P.E.I., he was a son of the late Rev. Frederick and Myrtle (Boyle) Sawdon. He resided in Sackville for most of his life.
Mr. Sawdon entered Mount Allison University in 1935 and four years later received his Bachelor of Arts degree. During his undergraduate years he served as editor of the campus newspaper, the Argosy, and his association with the university continued throughout his working career. He served several terms on the Board of Regents during an era of major change and played a crucial role on the university's Fund Council.
He enlisted with the New Brunswick Rangers shortly after graduation and served in England and through both the Italian and European campaigns.
He married Audrey Cook while still in England and they returned to Sackville in 1946 where he obtained employment with the late C.C. Avard, owner_publisher of the Tribune post. Two years later he and partner Fred Johns purchased the company and he soon became sole owner, remaining at the helm until 1971 when he sold it to a trio of employees _ Bill Freeman, Hilyard Crossman and David McKay. But he maintained an office there until 10 years ago and seldom missed a day of attendance.
Considered at one time to be the "conscience" of the New Brunswick Liberal party Mr. Sawdon often took controversial stands on public issues.
Judge W.W. Meldrum who served in the Louis Robichaud Cabinet, says "Bill Sawdon had the intelligence to look behind the surface and to speak up even when he might be a lone voice. He had the confidence and the willingness to express opinions of the Liberal Party, particularly on a local level."
One of Mr. Sawdon's favourite expressions was "Where all men think alike, few think very much."
Mr. Sawdon was a member of Sackville Branch Canadian Legion and a former member of the Sackville Curling Club. He was also a member of the Vienna Coffee Club which received recognition in Stewart MacLean's book, Coming Home.
Survivors include his wife, formerly Audrey Cook; on son, Ronald at home; and two sisters, Mildred Fellows of Annapolis Royal, N.S. and Eleanor Vidicaire of Florida. One Son, Robert, predeceased him.
