LeVan Marion Shugart
LeVan Marion Shugart of Palo Alto, Calif., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 5, 1999 at the age of 81 years. He was a long time high school science teacher and an avid fisherman. He was born September 4, 1917 in Waterloo, Iowa, the second son of Lyman Levi Shugart and Mary Belle Orr. "Shug" was always proud of his Iowa roots and it was through these early years that he had connections to the Weyburn area. James Orr, a long time Weyburn area farmer and stockman was one of Shug's favorite uncles and Jack Orr of Weyburn is his cousin. Shug was also the father of Yellow Grass area resident Chuck Shugart. He received his early education in Waterloo where he enjoyed the association of numerous cousins on the Orr side, and participated in many sports such as baseball, basketball, football, wrestling, and track throughout high school and later at the University of Northern Iowa where he earned his bachelor's degree in education in 1938. He taught one year in Rockwell, Iowa before WWII intervened in the direction of his life. He enlisted in the US Navy and served as a communications officer and was on convoy duty in the North Atlantic on the destroyer USS Quick where he served honorably for the entire length of the war. It was during this time that he met a pretty young Iowa gal that would become his lifelong partner for the next 55 years. He married Charlotte Verna Bennett, daughter of Vernon Washington Bennett and Lois Ester Day, in her home town of Rockwell City, Iowa, on September 28, 1944. After the war Shug took a high school teaching position in Frankfurt, Germany, teaching the children of American military personnel occupying Germany in the post war years. He also continued his passion for sports while he was there by coaching high school baseball, basketball, and football. He taught there for four years before returning to the United States and completing his master's degree at Colorado State in Greely, Colorado, where son Chuck was born in 1952. Then it was off to California where he accepted a high school science teaching job in Palo Alto where daughter Mary was born in 1953. He taught there from 1952 to 1980 when he retired. He never lost his enthusiasm for teaching and loved to see the "light go on" when a young person would grasp a new concept. Upon retiring he was able to pursue the true passion of his life - fishing. It didn't matter where. It didn't matter when. It didn't matter the weather, the time, or who was with him. As long as he had the rod and reel in his hand and the line in the water there was nowhere else that he would rather be. He spent a lot of summers hiking in the Sierra Mountains in Calif. and traveling to visit family to find those "secret fishing holes" where the big ones were. He was predeceased by a brother Alan in his youth, and his parents. He leaves his wife Charlotte of Palo Alto, son Charles Alan and wife Ronna Despain of Yellow Grass, a daughter Mary Lois and husband Steve Beare of Canberra, Australia, two grandsons Levi and Ben Shugart, three granddaughters Kaitlin Beare, Julie and Jennifer Shugart, and many dear aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss him very much. Following cremation a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. It was his wish that his ashes be spread at one of his favorite fishing spots high in the Sierras. In lieu of flowers make a donation to your favorite youth organization.
