Dorothy Skreden
SKREDEN. The family of Dorothy Skreden nee Dyrland, announces that she passed away early in the morning of June 14, 2004. Her funeral was held at Zion Lutheran Church, White Bear, SK on Friday, June 18, 2004 at 2:00 p.m.. She spent the last five years of her life at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Saskatoon, after suffering a stroke in June of 1998, which left her unable to walk or to use her left arm, but did not take away her sense of humour or interest in people. Dorothy was born on October 21, 1915 in the Neosho district southwest of Kyle, Saskatchewan, so she was 88 years young at the time of her passing. She leaves to mourn, son, Sherman Skreden and Joan, of Regina, and daughter, Sharon Dokken and Glenn, of Cabri; four grandchildren: Bryan Skreden (Amie), of Regina, Kari-Lynn (Clayton) Shearer, of North Vancouver, Joel Dokken, and Faye Dokken, of Saskatoon; one great-grandchild, Jacey Summer Shearer. She is also survived by a sister, Hilda Anderson; brother-in-law, Bjarne Loftsgard; sisters-in-law, Alma Skreden and Astrid Skreden; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and Norway. She was predeceased by her husband, Osmund Skreden, in 1969; parents, Enok and Gudbjor Dyrland; brother, Elvin; sisters: Jettie Benson, Olga Montgomery, Ester Kyllo, Ruth Holst, and Elise Loftsgard. She was baptized and confirmed in Zion (Horsebutte) Lutheran Church, White Bear, SK. She and Osmund farmed in the White Bear district. Dorothy loved to read and write, having some of her poems printed. She was a Sunday School Teacher and it was important to her that her family had a Christian upbringing. She instilled in her kids a sense of integrity by setting an example in her daily life. Blessed be her memory. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

THIESEN – Anne
THIESEN – Anne age 94 of Herbert Heritage Manor passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2004 at the Herbert – Morse Hospital. Anne is survived by her 2 sisters; Mary Kovach and Susie Thiessen of Swift Current and one brother, Henry Peters of Swift Current. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob on November 19, 1992; six brothers and three sisters. The late Anne Thiesen was born at Rhineland Municipality in Manitoba. She was united in marriage to Jacob Thiesen on December 3, 1933 in Swift Current, SK. Anne and Jacob moved to Robin Hood, SK where they lived for a short while before moving to farm in the Pambrun area. They lived in Pambrun until retirement in 1969 at which time they moved to Swift Current. Anne enjoyed gardening, music and traveling. Anne was a very gentle person and will be missed by all those that knew her. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. from the Zion Mennonite Church with Pastors Ray and Sylvia Friesen officiating. The pallbearers were Terry Neudorf, Dennis Olfert, Brad Peters, David Peters, Vern Peters and John Wall. The interment for Mrs. Anne Thiesen took place at Mount Pleasant Burial Park, Swift Current, SK. Memorial donations may be made to Millar College of the Bible or to the Herbert Heritage Manor. Arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

HARDEN – Kathleen Gertrude (nee Cave)
HARDEN – Kathleen Gertrude (nee Cave) of Swift Current passed away on July 3, 2004 at the Gull Lake Special Care Centre at the age of 82 years. Kathleen is survived by he daughter, Patsy (Trent) Jarvis and granddaughter Tori of Calgary, AB; sister, Eileen Cave; brother, Thomas Cave (jr) both of Swift Current and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Ken Harden in 1994; her parents, Thomas and Alma Cave; sister, Alma Bartel and brothers, William , Douglas, Gerald and Jack Cave. Kathleen was born February 28, 1922 in Swift Current and spent her early years working in the family business - Wessex Dairy. She attended Central School in Swift Current and completed her education at the Convent School. In June, 1948 she began a 37 year career with McDonald’s Consolidated, starting in the packing room and later moving to the order desk, a position she held until her retirement in 1985. Her favorite pastimes included, reading and bowling, an activity she continued to enjoy after her retirement as a member of the seniors bowling league. A funeral service was held on Thursday, July 8, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Stephens Anglican Church with Reverend Rob Hardwick officiating. The organist was Janet Neubauer and the pallbearers were Roger Byer, Keith Stork, John Cave and Gordon Johnson. The interment took place at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK. In memory of Kathleen, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Saskatchewan Diabetes. Association. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

MOEN Mrs. Phyllis Marie
MOEN Mrs. Phyllis Marie, of the Swift Current Care Centre, formerly of the Stewart Valley District, passed away into God’s Loving Care at the age of 67 on Saturday, July 31, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. The funeral service was held August 3, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. from St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Swift Current with Reverend Terry Simonson officiating. Tributes were given by granddaughters: Carrie Sander, Leslee & Kimberlee Day, and Kendra Moen; and Lisa Reimer on behalf of the staff at the Swift Current Care Centre. Honorary pallbearers were her roommate, Katie Jaskiewicz, the nursing staff of the Swift Current Care Centre, and all those who shared in Phyllis’s life. The acting pallbearers were her grandsons: Brant Moen, Travis Moen, Ryan Sander and Davin Snader; nephews, Murray Moen and Barry Thompson. The ushers were, Michael Moen and Darrel Tangen. The organist was, Arlene Olson and the soloist was, Connie Day. The interment took place at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Swift Current. Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Wendy (Brad) Sander, Sherry (Stan) Day; daughter-in-law, Sheryl Moen; grandchildren: Carrie, Ryan and Davin Sander, Leslee and Kimberlee Day, Brant, Travis and Kendra Moen; sister, Doreen (Brian) Thompson; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Moen and Francis Moen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lorne Moen; son, Brian Moen; grandson, Michael Day; parents, Fred and Josephine Erickson; sister, Eileen Eidem; brothers-in-law, Harold and Aldin Moen, and Martin Eidem. Phyllis was born August 8, 1936 in Swift Current. She took her schooling at Velva in the Cantuar district and at Cantuar and Swift Current. She worked in Swift Current prior to her marriage to Lorne in 1956. They lived on the family farm and raised their three children. In the fall of 1969 Phyllis’s life changed drastically after a farm accident which left her physically handicapped. Although she faced many challenges during her lifetime, she loved company and the coffee pot was always on. After Lorne passed away she became a resident of the Swift Current Care Centre. The staff and residents became a part of her family. She will be sadly missed by family and friends and her memory will be cherished forever. In her memory, memorial donations to the Swift Current Care Centre and the Canadian Cancer Society will be greatly acknowledged by the family. Funeral Arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

BASSENDOWSKE - Susanne
BASSENDOWSKE - Susanne of Herbert, Saskatchewan passed away at the Herbert Nursing Home on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at the age of 99 years and 7 months. She was born on December 15, 1904 at Kullig, West Prussia (Germany) to Alexander and Anna Neubauer. The family emigrated to Canada in 1908 and settled in the Herbert district. She attended public school at the Rosefarm School near Herbert and later moved to Herbert with her parents in 1920. She married Jacob Bassendowske on January 9, 1925 and three children were born to this union. On August 14, 1938 she and her husband were baptized and joined the Elim Mennonite Brethren Church near Kelstern, Saskatchewan and after Jacob became the Co-op manager in Herbert in 1945 they transferred their membership to the Herbert Mennonite Church. Susanne was always good at handiwork and over the years made literally hundreds of novelty items. She enjoyed making items for the farmers market and crocheting afghans, which she donated to the hospital. After living independently in her Herbert home until the age of 90, Susanne moved to the Prairie View Lodge in Swift Current in December of 1995. Five years later, in 2000, she again moved to her hometown of Herbert into the Herbert Heritage Manor and after about a year she was transferred to the Herbert Nursing Home where she resided for the past 3 years under the loving care of the Nursing Home staff. Besides being predeceased by her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, Jacob; one son, Victor; daughter-in-law, Marie; two sisters, Marie and Annie; two brothers, John and Alex and one granddaughter, Sandra. She is mourned by two sons; Ethan (Loretta) of Regina, Harry of Swift Current; one brother, Jake of Maple Ridge, B.C.; five grandchildren: Dale (Julie) Bassen of Santiago, Chile, Janet (Glen) Crook of Regina, Clark Bassendowske of Calgary, Gregg (Patricia) Bassendowske of Calgary, Gayle (Mark) Diduck of Lloydminster and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held on Monday, July 26, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. from the Herbert Mennonite Brethren Church with Pastor Bob Cappelle officiating. The pallbearers were: Clark Bassendowske, Gregg Bassendowske, Mark Diduck, Wayne Bassendowski, Ron Bassendowski and Garry Redekop. The interment took place at the Herbert Cemetery, Herbert, Saskatchewan. Memorial donations may be made to the Herbert Nursing Home or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current and Herbert, Saskatchewan.

HORVEY Mrs. Margit Christine (nee Dokken)
HORVEY Mrs. Margit Christine (nee Dokken) – January 1, 1924 – July 21, 2004. We lost our best friend this day. Marg passed away peacefully with her family by her side at 80 years of age. This incredibly musical, crafty, witty wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother leaves to mourn her best friend and husband, Oliver, and her children: Dennis (Sharyn) Horvey, Diane (Don) Manning, Ivan (Laurie) Horvey and Neil Horvey. Also cherishing her memory are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Michael (Kim), Daniel and Adam Horvey, Lisa Horvey, David Manning, Dallas (Brandi) Manning, and Rebecca, Erika and Tyler Horvey. Marg was predeceased by an infant son; her parents, Thorvald and Ingeborg Dokken; her brothers and sister: Carl Dokken, Lewis Dokken, Melvin Dokken, Baby Rudolph Dokken and Thelma Rya. Marg was also predeceased by Oliver’s parents, sister and two brothers, all of whom she considered as family of her own. She will also be sadly missed by her many family and extended family members and friends. The funeral service was held on Saturday, July 24, 2004 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Terry Simonson officiating. The organist was Arlie Neufeld. The ushers were Glenn Dokken and Levern Horvey. The Honorary pallbearers were all of Margit’s family and friends. The active pallbearers were: Michael Horvey, David Manning, Dallas Manning, Dennis Horvey, Ivan Horvey, Neil Horvey and Tyler Horvey. The interment was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

FERGUSON, Mrs. Ruth Idell, (nee Pengelly)
FERGUSON, Mrs. Ruth Idell, (nee Pengelly), of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2004, at the Palliser Regional Care Centre, after a courageous battle with cancer. The funeral service was held on Monday, July 19, 2004 at Parkside memorial Funeral Chapel with Reverend Harold Benjamin officiating. The organist was Arlene Olson and the honorary pallbearers were her family and friends who shared in her life. The interment took place at memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Ruth is survived by her daughters, Margaret (Jim) Butcher, of Swift Current, and Linda (Phil) Lysager, of Maple Creek; granddaughter, Laura Lysager, of Maple Creek; grandson, Brian (Suzanne) Lysager, of Brooks; and one great-granddaughter, Kaitlin Lysager, of Brooks. She is also survived by her sister-in-laws, Mary Pengelly, of Red Deer, and Myrtle Pengelly, of Ponoka; as well as many nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Murray Ferguson, in 1963; her parents, Arthur and Lillian Pengelly; brothers, Robert Pengelly and Francis Pengelly; sister, Edna Dickie; and one nephew, Garry Dickie. She was born on the family farm April 21, 1919, 4 miles north of St. Boswells, Saskatchewan. Ruth was the youngest of four Pengelly children. The rest of her siblings were just about grown up by the time Ruth came along. She spent a happy but lonely childhood on the family farm. Her mother, Lillian, was ill a lot, when Ruth was growing up, so Ruth and her father, Arthur, did most of the chores inside and outside around the farm. Times were hard and she learned to make do with very little in those days. She married her childhood sweetheart, Murray Ferguson, on February 16, 1941. They had two daughters, Margaret and Linda. The Ferguson family, including Arthur Pengelly, moved to Swift Current. Murray Ferguson passed away in 1`963 and in the fall of 1965, Ruth went back to school to take a commercial course so she could obtain employment. She worked in the Admitting Department of the Swift Current Union Hospital for 18 years, retiring when she was 65. Ruth enjoyed music and accompanied her father when he played the fiddle and loved to sing hymns. She spent many years collecting information for her family tree. She loved company. Family and friends were always welcome and no one went away from her home hungry. She loved flowers and couldn’t wait for spring so she could be out in her flower garden. She had a unique way of expressing herself and maintained her sense of humor to the very end. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Palliser Regional Care Centre Auxiliary, c/o Palliser Regional Care Centre, 440 Central Ave. South, Swift Current, S9H 3G6, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Society, would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

BAUMANN, Mr. Anselm
BAUMANN, Mr. Anselm, aged 91 years, of Swift Current, Saskatchewan passed away on July 5, 2004 at the Cypress Regional Hospital, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The funeral service was held on Monday, July 12, 2004 at Parkside Memorial Funeral Chapel with Lay Pastoral Minister, Doris Watt, officiating. The organist was Arlene Olson. The honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in his life. The interment was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Anselm is survived by his sons: Edwin Baumann, of Gabriola Island, B.C., and Rudy Baumann, of Swift Current; grandchildren: Gwendolyn Wigbout, of Aldergrove, B.C., Daniel Baumann, of Mission, B.C., Sandra Littlefield, of Mount Lehman, B.C., Shawn Baumann, of Abbotsford, B.C., Kevin Baumann, of Saskatoon, Craig Baumann, of Swift Current, Ryan Baumann, of Swift Current, Tracey Ginter, of Calgary, Darryl Ginter of Swift Current; thirteen great-grandchildren; former daughters-in-law, Marion Baumann, and Nancy Wall; sisters, Bertha Kuchle and Anne Reynolds; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Rudolph, and Bertha Baumann; daughter, Pat Ginter, in 1993; son, Theodore, in 1993; brother, Frank Baumann; sister, Louise Baumann; brothers-in-law, Steve Kuchle and Arthur Reynolds. Anselm was a man who was interested in nature, taking a keen interest in the world around him. He excelled in sports, baseball, curling, bowling, golf, hunting, fishing and pool. He was musically inclined, in his younger days playing for house dances, in later years being a member of the Odds and Ends Band. He will be very much missed by his family and many friends. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

MOE – Olaf
MOE – Olaf of Cabri, SK passed away on Friday, June 25, 2004 at the age of 84. Olaf was born in the Webb district on September 24, 1919. At the age of four, Olaf, his parents, Peter and Anne Marie; sisters, Clara and Borghild and brother Albert moved to a farm three miles west of Battrum. One year later they moved to a farm where Francana Minerals is now located. He and his siblings attended Mistletoe School. In 1928 he and his parents relocated to a farm across the road where he resided until 1988 when he retired to Prairie Homes in Cabri. Olaf started farming with his father at a young age and continued farming until his retirement except for the years of 1941 and 1942, which he spent in the Armed Forces. He spent eight years on the council of R.M. of Riverside and was on the Roseray Wheat Board Committee for over 20 years. He was also on the St. John’s Church board and was a member of the Swift Current Health Region Board. Olaf kept weather records for himself and later for the Department of Transport for many years. After his father’s death in 1951, he was provider and caregiver for his mother until her death in 1982. He was a great lover of dogs and always had a dog to keep him company. He liked to watch birds and hunted in his early years. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Olaf was predeceased by father, Peter, in 1951; mother, Anne Marie, in 1982; brothers Emil in 1921 and Albert in 1931; sisters, Clara McGuigan in 1991 and Borghild Drummond in 2001; half-sister, Eline Eggen, in 1976, brothers-in-law, Barney McGuigan, in 1985 and John Drummond in 1970 and nephews, Ed Hintz, in 1990 and Keith Drummond in 2004. He is survived by his nephews, Earl (Mary) McGuigan, Barry (Judy) McGuigan, Allan (Anna) Drummond and nieces, Carol Hintz, Joyce (Ken ) Horst, Cheryl (Ted) Salken and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. from the Scandia Lutheran Church in Cabri, with Pastor Eugene Mau officiating. Barry McGuigan gave the eulogy and a solo was sung by Paula McGuigan. Lunch was served by the Scandia E.L.W. The interment took place at the St. John’s Cemetery, Fosterton, SK. Honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in Olaf’s life. Pallbearers were Barry McGuigan, Ken Horst, Brian Horst, Murray Heron, Dale Hintz and Chris Salken. The ushers were Allan Thoreson and John Undseth. His family would much appreciate that donations in Olaf’s memory be made to the Scandia Lutheran Church. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.
