Hedwig was born September 7, 1911, in Leiberg, Germany. Her father died in an accident when she was only four years old. In her early teens, she moved to a neighboring village to serve as nanny and housekeeper to their pastor’s family. She told many stories about life at the pastor’s. One of her favorites was how on weekends she and a group of girls would go on bicycle tours through the mountains sometimes as far as France. Next she worked in the kitchen in an Altes Heim (Senior’s Home). On May 15, 1930 she immigrated to Canada arriving in Herbert, SK. She worked for Ingvald Austring (a Swift Current dairy farmer) as domestic help. She would often serve 13 at a meal. On February 22, 1931 she married Walter Sesula and moved to a farm north of Waldeck. Although their first-born twins died at birth, they went on to raise five children. She visited her homeland twice, in 1958 and 1989. Walter and Hedwig were members of the Peace Lutheran Church until they moved to Swift Current in 1968. Having retired from farming they transferred their membership to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Hedwig’s retirement years were far from idle. She cared for Walter at home when his health and memory deteriorated. She always had many projects on the go – growing, canning and freezing vegetables, quilting with the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and knitting or crocheting doilies, baby sweaters, potholders, and afghans. Many people, both in Canada and abroad, benefited from her generous and industrious nature. Friends and family alike (and often strangers) were welcomed into her home enjoying her gift of hospitality, a cheerful attitude, and delicious cooking. Even after she developed Alzheimer’s, she rarely complained and frequently expressed gratitude to her caregivers. Her faith remained strong. On February 11, 2004 she recited the Lord’s Prayer, even though she had long since lost the ability to recognize family and friends. This verse found among her possessions written in her own hand sums up her outlook on life:
Count your garden by the flowers,
Never by the leaves that fall;
Count your days by golden hours,
Don’t remember clouds at all;
Count the night by stars, not shadows,
Count your life by smiles, not tears;
And with joy on every birthday,
Count your age by friends, not years,
In Hedwig’s memory friends and family may make donations to the Mount Calvary Lutheran Women’s Missionary League to further her passion for sending quilts and baby layettes overseas. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
