WIEBE – Ruben Wiebe
WIEBE – Ruben Wiebe, age 65, of Gouldtown, SK passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, December 17, 2004. Ruben was born in the Herbert Hospital on November 22, 1939; the third son to George and Susie Wiebe. He took his schooling at River Dell School. The journey to and from school, recesses, playing hockey, ball, ect.. took priority over his lessons, although once he memorized a recitation he never forgot it! Ruben felt a strong connection to the land right from his youth. He came to know his Lord and Savior on October 25, 1964 when he put on Christ in baptism. Many friends were made through the years at River Dell, and one friend in particular turned into his sweetheart. Ruben and Erna dated for a time and married on October 28, 1967. That first winter they lived in Swift Current, where Ruben was employed as a construction worker, building the Swift Current Comprehensive School. That spring Ruben & Erna headed to the farm. Those years of working together establishing their farm were precious years and soon a son, Bruce Derek, was born on July 26, 1968. What a joy for Ruben to have a son to farm with! Later Charlotte Joy was born, on April 25, 1972. Then came Carolyn Ann on January 28, 1975, and finally, to complete this little family, Todd Ashley, on June 5th, 1979. Ruben was a good father, who especially delighted in Christmas and spoiling not only the kids, but also Erna with surprise gifts in big boxes…too big to wrap. After living on the Seibel homestead for several years, Ruben and Erna bought their own farm, the “Janzen farm” and began a new chapter in life. We children can say with pride that we indeed were a part of the ‘pioneering era’, as we experienced life with no running water, outhouse and no telephone for a period of time, as our farmyard got established. Years went by and the opportunity to purchase the Seibel homestead presented itself, and so another move took place, where Ruben resided until his passing. Although Ruben struggled continually with asthma, he made the best of things and worked hard on the land, and with his cattle. It was with great satisfaction that Bruce came of age to share the responsibilities of the farm with his dad. This allowed for Ruben & Erna to become entrepreneurs of E & R Grocers in Gouldtown. This was the perfect job for Dad…. Coffeeing with neighbors, catching up on what was new, and maybe even selling the odd bag of groceries. The Community Hall, with it’s annual Christmas Program, was also a big highlight in Ruben’s life. What precious memories are held in those videotapes of mom and dad acting on stage, in the German language of course, to everyone’s delight. 1999 brought its own set of challenges, with Ruben suffering a life-threatening stroke on Erna’s Birthday. It was unclear as to whether or not Ruben would even recover; however, to everyone’s surprise he suffered no long-term effects, and even saw great improvements in his health. Grandchildren entered the picture, and this brought a new era of joy into Ruben’s life. These last years were a constant struggle for Ruben, not being able to work the way he used to, but he filled his days with his love for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Little House on the Prairie episodes, and his love for staying in touch with all those who meant so much to him, through the telephone. He will be sadly missed, but we take comfort in knowing that he has fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith; now there is in store for him the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, has awarded him. Ruben is survived by his loving wife Erna, of 37 years; son Bruce (Natasha Johnson), daughters Charlotte Peters (Dale), Carolyn Brednich (Benjamin), and son Todd Wiebe; grandchildren, MacKenzie, Kalen & Camrynne Peters, Reece & Chase Brednich; brothers Abe (Helen), Ben (Chris), Philip (Connie), sister Olga (Ernie) Cornelson, sister-in-0law Elizabeth Sadowski and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruben is predeceased by his parents George & Susie Wiebe and his brother Jake. Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 23, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. from the Herbert Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Donovan Epp and Benjamin Brednich officiating. The interment took place at the Gouldtown Cemetery. Tributes were given by his wife and children. The eulogy was read by Natasha Johnson. Special music, Daddy’s Hands was brought by “All 4 One”. Ushers were Willy Funk, Elmer Wiebe, Darcy Seibel, and Jim Wiebe. Pallbearers were: Bruce Wiebe, Todd Wiebe, Ben Wiebe, Phillip Wiebe, Dale Peters and Wendell Cornelson. Honorary pallbearers were Abe Wiebe, Olga Cornelson, Corny Wiebe, David Seibel, Roy Seibel, Wes Seibel, Leo Seibel and all those who shared in his life. Memorial donations may be made to the Ronald McDonald House – 1011 University Drive Saskatoon, SK S7N 0K9. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home.

BIRD – Kenneth Eldon
BIRD – Kenneth Eldon passed away peacefully on April 23, 2003 at the Kyle Health Care Centre. He is survived by his wife, Anna; daughter Dianne (Don); grandchildren, Dana (Kari) and Deanna (Baden), great-grandson, Connor; sister, Joyce Swanson; brothers, Frank (Peggy), Roy (Vivian); sister-in-law, Elma Klassen; brother-in-law, Albert Gaensly and several nieces and nephews. Ken was born to Olive and Bertrum on the family farm at Kyle on March 8, 1923, the fourth of six children. He took his schooling at Leyton, but was not able to complete his high school as, in the 30’s most children had to give up education to go into the work force. Ken worked at various farms, ending up as a hired hand for Louis Gaensly which is where he met his future wife – Anna. They were married in 1944 and to this union came their only child, Dianne. Over the years, Ken has worn many boots. In 1944 he served in the Army and spent two years overseas. Once he returned home he took over Emil Gaensly’s farm. He had many positions on several boards in our town. He was a dedicated Legion member – November 11th being a day that he planned for so diligently, he was a member of the hospital board, the Credit Union Board, the church board, the telephone board and R.M. Councellor. Ken was an ardent sports fan, always taking in the Kyle Elks hockey games. At bonspiel time, he could be found in the front row seat, cheering on his favorite team. A family friend, Jim Herr, introduced him to the game of golf. Over the years he took many camping trips which always entailed rounds of golf. He played and loved this sport up until two years ago. He taught the basics to his two grandchildren, Dana and Deanna, and they both love it as much as he did. In the middle years he took up downhill skiing, and taught both grandkids. Family ski trips were not uncommon as were trips with their friends, Marshalls, Christiansons, McKechneys, and Sorensons. Ken was a self taught musician who had a definite ear for music, learning how to play the violin. His love of music showed in his magic touch to the fiddle. He made several yearly trips to Emma Lake to take part in the jam sessions there. He was also part of the judging panel for up and coming musicians in Swift Current as well as part of the Old Time Fiddlers. He was part of several dance bands, the last one being the Lutheran String Quartet. Ken loved to spend time with his friends, whether it was playing music, playing cards or just visiting. Anna would often find out a half and hour before meals that there would be an extra guest or two. In his last year, when he was no longer able to farm, he was pleased that his grandson, Dana, moved back from Calgary to "step into his farming shoes". He looked forward to the coffee breaks that the two of them had so they could discuss the events of the day. He truly wanted to be present for Dana’s wedding in July, but time would not allow it, however, he will be with us in our hearts and minds. His pride and joy in the last months was his only great grandchild, Connor - son of Deanna and Baden. Every morning the question to Anna was "I wonder if Connor has a tooth yet" and "Is the little guy coming out today?" It is a shame that Connor is too young to remember his great-grandfather as Ken would have loved to have been part of his growing up. Ken was predeceased by: parents, Olive and Bertrum, brothers, Clifford and Jerry, brother-in-laws, Hilding Swanson and Ted Klassen and sister-in-law, Signe. As a request by family, donations may be made to the Kyle Health Care Centre or the Clearwater Lutheran Church. A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 26, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Clearwater Lutheran Church in Kyle, SK. with Pastor Ron Bestvater officiating. The pianist was Bev Dyck. A duet was sung by Bev Dyck and Darlene Hartness. The eulogy was read by nephew Glenn Bird and the ushers were Archie Lowe and Glenn Marshall. The urn bearers were grandchildren Dana and Deanna. The interment took place at the Clearwater Cemetery, Kyle, SK. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Memorial Funeral Home, Swift Current, SK.

As kids we loved and admired his faith. He always enjoyed his many friends and neighbors and was happy to lend a helping hand. Roland farmed for many years in the Waldeck area, and once he retired, he still came out to help his children when they needed him. He was always willing to give the help and support his family needed. Roland was a man of many gifts. He was always building houses or remodeling them. Roland and Adalene spent 15 years holidaying in Arizona for the winter. Here they spent many hours shopping at flea markets, playing games and visiting. Roland and Adalene moved to Swift Current in 1996 where Roland proceeded to completely remodel and enlarge their home. Roland enjoyed fishing, carpentry, going for coffee with their friends, and oil painting on cream cans, saw blades and anything else he could find. Roland was a vibrant, lively man with a keen sense of humor (which was maintained even in time of trouble). He loved to play board games with his family and he took great pride in usually defeating his grandchildren at a game of penny. Every summer Roland and Adalene had their camper packed and ready to camp with their family anywhere from the West coast to Manitoba, as well as partaking in tours of various parts of the country. Roland’s love for his family and God never wavered. He served for many years as a church board member, and the pastors and their families were always the family’s close friends. He was always supportive to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren – they were his greatest joy. He presented a godly example and mentor for his family and friends. Our lives are so much richer because he was a part of our lives, and our greatest comfort is knowing that he is now in Jesus’ arms. Memorial donations may be made to Gideon’s International.
