PETER RUDYK

November 02, 2004

PETER RUDYK With sadness, the family announces that on October 23, 2004, at the age of 88, Peter Rudyk passed away at St. Boniface Hospital. He was a devoted and loving husband to Michalina (Lee) during their 59 years of marriage. He was a dedicated father to Barbara and Gregory (Marlene), and an adoring grandfather to Claire. He was predeceased by his beloved Lee in April 2004; his parents, Mykyta and Ksenia Rudyk; and by his three brothers, John, Paul, and Steve. Peter was born icon and educated in East Kildonan. In 1943, he entered the employ of the Winnipeg Electric Co., which eventually became Centra Gas. He began as a general labourer, rising to the position of weigh master in the coke yard. After the change to natural gas, he became a serviceman, and finally a dispatcher, retiring in 1981. After Peter married icon Lee in 1944, he built a home on Kimberly Avenue where they resided for 34 years, and in 1986, they moved to St. Vital. Peter enjoyed bowling for over 40 years, being a founding member of the Twilight Bowling League, where he served as President for 19 years, and, more recently, being a member of the St. Vital Roundenders, winning the National Seniors Championship in 1993. He enjoyed curling at Rossmere and later at the Heather, and loved golf with his buddies. He had a commitment to labour issues as expressed by his longtime involvement as secretary of the O.C.A.W. Union, and support of the NDP Party. He volunteered in many ways ranging from Folklorama to Cancercare. He was a past member of the Manitoba Society of Seniors, and a member of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians Senior Citizens Club. Peter found joy in life's simple pleasures, a freshly mowed lawn, a game of cards, a Kelekis hot dog, a good cigar, a lively polka, an outrageous joke. He was devoted to Lee, enjoying memorable travels, hosting family gatherings, searching for the ideal blueberry patch, or taking a stroll. As her health declined, he continued to look after her until her passing. Also he was devoted to his family, delighting in every graduation, recital, science fair, and sporting event. He cherished his friends, many who endured his most unusual nicknames. And he had a special place in his heart for his granddaughter, upon whom he lavished his time, energy, and affection. He will be missed. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with the Rev. S. Jonasson officiating. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

OLAFUR SIGURDSON

November 02, 2004

OLAFUR PALL SIGURDSON OLI (1925 - 2004) Olafur Sigurdson, known by all as Oli passed away on October 30, 2004 at the Arborg Hospital. He is survived and missed by his brother Sveinn (Frances); his sisters, Borga Jakobson and Vigdis Bauernhuber (Joe); his many nephews and nieces and their children, and by many cousins, neighbours and friends. Oli was predeceased by his wife, Benny; parents, Kristjon and Indiana Sigurdson; brother-in-law, Dr. Bjarki Jakobson; nephew, Gestur Jakobson and niece, Ingrid Bauernhuber. Oli's home throughout his life was his fathers homestead farm, known as Helluland, in the Geysir district, near Arborg. He attended Laufas School and farmed with his father and his younger brother. As a young man, he attended Folk Schools, conducted by the Manitoba Federation of Agriculture and Co-operation (MFAC). These short courses inspired a life-time dedication to the co-operative movement. The Folk Schools also provided skills training and an opportunity to establish friendships with like-minded people. Oli was an avid reader and, in many respects, in the Icelandic tradition, he was a self-educated man. He took an active role in many related organizations. He was president of the Geysir Community Club from 1948-1959. He served as President of the Arborg Consumer's Co-op Association for many years. He was a founding member of the Arborg Credit Union. This was the beginning of years of work on a broader scale. In 1955, he became a director of the Co-operative Credit Society of Manitoba. He later became a charter member of the Credit Union League of Manitoba, and then a National Director of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). In 1977, he was elected to the Board of the Credit Union Central. From 1970-1978, Oli served on the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation Board. Later, he worked with the Manitoba Agricultural Credit Corporation. This active involvement in public life was made possible by the support of his family, particularly his brother, Sveinn. Oli was dedicated to the farm and took a consistent attitude to all the organizations that he belonged to. He had a definite philosophy of life. When he put his hand to the plough he was not easily deterred. In 1980, at the age of 55, Oli married icon Benny (Gudrun Benjaminson France). They had many common interests and loved to travel. The years of their marriage, before Benny's sudden death in 1993, were the happiest of his life. The family would like to thank the staff of the Arborg and Concordia Hospitals, who cared for Oli in his last month. Special thanks to Dr. Weinberg of Concordia ICU and Drs. Greyvenstein and Matakinka of Arborg Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, at the Arborg Unitarian Church, with Rev. Stefan Jonasson officiating. A lunch will follow at the Geysir Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Oli's memory, to the Arborg Unitarian Church or to CancerCare Manitoba, P.O. Box 2248, Winnipeg, R3C 4A6.
