William Gearheart "Geary" Martin
December 8,1933 - October 15, 2004
William Gearheart "Geary" Martin passed away on Friday, Oct. 15.
He was 70 years old. He is survived by his wife Diane and son and daughter-in-law Roy and Ginger, two cousins, three nieces and two nephews.
Geary graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor of science in psychology. He joined the U.S. Navy in February 1957, and was married to Diane in July of the same year. He earned his pilot's wings in August 1958. He served in the Navy for 21 years, retiring as a commander in August of 1977. After retirement he started a new career as a computer programmer/analyst. He retired from that career in 1998.
After his second retirement, Geary and Diane traveled extensively, visiting over five countries including Canada, Australia, China and Scotland. They also took countless RV trips throughout the United States sight-seeing and visiting family and friends.
For over 25 years, Geary was an active member of the Graham Memorial Church family. He was also a supportive member of Scout Troop 806 while Roy was active. Geary was always ready and willing to lend a hand whenever anyone needed help with anything.
Memorial services were held on Oct. 29 at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church in Coronado. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, 4015 Wilson Blvd., 10th floor, Arlington VA, 22201-1977 or a church or charity of choice.
Margaret Clarke Robertson

Margaret Clarke Robertson, 92, died peacefully on Oct. 26 in Coronado.
A mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Margie was known for her strong spirit, determination and love of people. She was capable of learning the essence of a person in a matter of moments. And she remembered what she learned! Her love of life was exemplified in her optimism and readiness for a new adventure. Until recently, she traveled and visited with her family around the world. She was known for her strong opinions on political things. She grew up in Chester, Va. and had the grace southern ladies are known for. She loved her native Virginia, its traditions and its good cooking. While she lived much of her life in Coronado, she was always a Virginian.
She was a Navy wife and WW II widow, a schoolteacher, volunteer and docent as well as a professional shopper. All activities were pursued with great vigor, enthusiasm and excellence. Her home furnishings are legendary and represent an eclectic mixture of antiques and objects of interest. Her flamboyance of dress and manner meant that few ever forgot an encounter with Margie.
Margie married her childhood sweetheart Edward D. Robertson, USNA '35, in 1937. They lived in Hawaii, Panama, Philadelphia, New London, Kittery, Maine and San Diego while Ed served in the submarine service. Ed, then executive officer, was lost at sea when the USS Capelin went missing with all hands in November 1943.
Margie is survived by her two children Edward D. Robertson, Jr. of Richmond, Va. and Meredith Heinecke of Coronado; five grandchildren, Josh Robertson of New York City, Megan Robertson Lowden of Richmond, Va.; John Heinecke of Agoura; Laura Heinecke Green of Carlsbad; and Matt Heinecke of Nashville, Tenn; as well as her great-grand daughter Hannah Green.
Memorial Services were held at Christ Episcopal Church in Coronado on Monday, Nov. 1. Her ashes will be scattered at sea. Donations in lieu of flowers can be given to the Coronado Hospital Foundation, 250 Prospect Place, Coronado, CA 92118.
Rear Admiral William "Bill" Bailey

Rear Admiral William B. Bailey passed away Monday, Nov. 8 in his Coronado home.
Admiral Bailey was 102 years old and had been a resident of Coronado for more than 50 years.
Bailey was born in Johnson City, Tenn., and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1924. He was the oldest living admiral and second oldest Naval Academy graduate.
He received a master's degree in science from Harvard University in 1931. Admiral Bailey also had extensive sea duty, including assignments onboard the cruiser USS Indianapolis and the battleship USS Pennsylvania. A specialist in communications and navigation, he was instrumental in the early development of shipboard UHF communications. Admiral Bailey served in World War II and participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Ironically, Admiral Bailey retired from the Navy in 1957 due to health reasons. During his retirement years in Coronado, Admiral Bailey was actively involved in community service at Christ Episcopal Church in Coronado.
Bailey is survived by his wife Gloria Bailey and her family; Captain Walter Heinecke; his wife Meredith and their children John, Laura and Matthew. Bailey is also survived by two daughters by his first wife Dorothy King Bailey. They are Mrs. Mack O. Matthews of Mobile, Ala.; and her three sons William, Douglas and John Matthews. His second daughter is Wilma Pooler of Portland, Ore. and her children are Doro and Leslie. The great-great grandchildren are Brian and Garret Matthews and William, Jacob and Elizabeth Kenward.
A memorial service will be at Christ Episcopal Church at 11 am on Nov. 17 followed by inurnment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery
in Point Loma. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Sharp Coronado Hospital Foundation, 235 Prospect Place, Coronado, CA 92118.
Elizabeth "Betty" Ackerman
August 11, 1918 - November 7, 2004
Betty Ackerman, age 86, passed away after a long illness on Nov. 7 in her Coronado home of 47 years.
Betty is fondly remembered as a loving mother and generous friend with an easy smile, quick wit and light-hearted sense of humor.
Born Elizabeth Ann Bascom in Madison, Wis. on Aug. 11, 1918, Betty graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin, earning advanced degrees in history and library science.
Betty always had an adventurous streak. At the age of 16, she rode from Madison to Mexico City in the rumbleseat of an old sedan. During World War II, she was a civil service librarian at Navy bases up and down the West Coast. In 1947, she moved to Guam where, as the only librarian, she resurrected Navy and civilian libraries destroyed during the war. She later visited Southeast Asia, Europe and much of North America.
On Guam, Betty met and married Christopher J. Ackerman, a civil service engineer. In 1957, with two tots and a baby in tow, they moved to Coronado where Chris became director of engineering at North Island NAS. They found a home near North Beach, raised their family, made many friends and enjoyed travel until Chris passed away after 35 years of happy marriage. When illness later confined Betty to home, she was often seen being wheeled along Ocean Boulevard where the broad Pacific Ocean rekindled warm memories of her life's many joys and adventures.
Betty is survived by two sons Chris Ackerman of Coronado and Peter Ackerman of Los Angeles; daughter Jeannie Ackerman Fenchel; son-in-law Greg Fenchel; and two grandsons, Greg Jr. and Jeff Fenchel, all of Albuquerque, N.M.
Services for Betty Ackerman will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, at 11 am at Sacred Heart Church in Coronado. Later, in a private ceremony, she will rejoin her husband in interment at Holy Cross Cemetery
in San Diego. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Coronado Hospital Foundation.
Doris M. Nelson
May 1, 1919 - Nov. 11, 2004
Doris M. Nelson, 85, a resident of Coronado for the past 47 years, passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, at Sharp Coronado Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on Thursday, Nov. 18 at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church. Pastor David McElrath will officiate.
Mrs. Nelson was born May 1, 1919, on a farm in Iowa. She was one of two sisters and four brothers, one of whom was her twin. She recalled riding a horse to her one-room school house as a child. She moved to San Diego 72 years ago where she met her husband of 59 years, Ernest. She is remembered by family and friends as an eternal optimist.
Mrs. Nelson was the owner of The Coronado Beauty Salon, first located on Ninth Street and Orange Avenue and later on C Avenue.
In addition to her husband, Ernest, she is survived by her sister June Johnson of Escondido; nieces and nephews Nancy Shaw, Mary Oberg, Kay Stillerman, Doris Polson, Sandy Matthews, David Flesner and Jim Flesner; also godchild Gerald Unterkoefer.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Coronado Hospital Foundation.
Private burial services will be held at the El Camino Memorial Park.
Carole J. Mosher
August 5, 1929 - November 8, 2004
Carole J. Mosher of Coronado passed away on Nov. 8.
She was born in Hermansville, Mich., on Aug. 5, 1929 and was a registered nurse.
Carole is survived by her husband Allen Mosher; sons Greg and Dan; sisters Gloria Gaitley, Bobbie Wooten and Judy Glaab; daughter in-law Deanna Mosher; and grandchildren Garett and Will Mosher.
Services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 3 pm at Christ Episcopal Church, Ninth Street and C Avenue.
