Grace Burton Powell

Memorial services for longtime Vacaville educator Grace Burton Powell, 64, will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 22 at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main St.

The Rev. Bill Hausler of Harvest Church will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Mrs. Powell - former principal of Vacaville High School, spelling bee organizer and community volunteer - died Oct. 7, 1997, after a short illness.

Mrs. Powell was born in Vacaville on May 21, 1933.

She attended Vacaville High School, earned her teaching credentials at University of California, Berkeley, and returned to Vacaville with her husband, William, to build a home among her family's orchards.

Mrs. Powell taught English and world history at several Contra Costa County schools while earning her master's degree in counseling psychology.

In 1965 she landed a job as a counselor in Vacaville and dean of girls at the Will C. Wood campus of Vacaville High School. She was hired in 1975 as assistant principal for counseling and curriculum at Vacaville High, and in 1979 became principal.

During her tenure, the high school was named a California Distinguished High School in 1985-86 by the state Department of Education. In 1986-87 the school was noted by the U.S. Department of Education's National Secondary Schools Recognition Program.

Mrs. Powell retired in 1989 after 10 years at the helm of Vacaville High School and 30 years as an educator. She won the admiration of teachers, students and community leaders with her leadership abilities and her dedication to students.

For nearly 15 years, her strong voice prompted local students at the Vacaville Chamber of Commerce's annual spelling bee, which she had organized since 1991.

She was also active in the local Soroptimists Club, the Vacaville Community Foundation - granting scholarships to students - and a national honor society for female educators - Delta Kappa Gamma.

Mrs. Powell also enjoyed gardening and was especially proud of her roses. She also enjoyed word puzzles, which she did daily.

She is survived by her husband, William, of Vacaville; sons, David and Brian of Vacaville; grandchildren, Sarah, Cameron, Emily and Allison; brothers, Clarence Burton, Earl Burton, Marion "Buck" Burton, Fred Burton, George Burton, all of Vacaville; Ernest Burton of Dixon, and Gary Burton of Corning; and a sister, Margaret Cook of Sacramento.

Vicki Sue Gifford

A memorial service for Vicki Sue Gifford, 49, of Vacaville will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in McCune Garden Chapel.

The Rev. Stephen Leonetti of Epiphany Episcopal Church will officiate.

Mrs. Gifford died Oct. 7, 1997, in Davis as the result of a car accident.

Born Dec. 1, 1947, in San Luis Obispo, she moved to Vacaville 14 years ago.

She worked as an assistant resident coordinator for DQ University for one year. She was also a student there.

She graduated from Atascadero Union High School in 1965.

She was interested in Native American culture and enjoyed beading and leather work.

Mrs. Gifford is survived by her daughter, April Misty of Vacaville; granddaughter, Ashley Gifford Adcock of Vacaville; parents, Jim and Violet Wescom of Vacaville; brother, Gale of Elk Grove; sisters, Paula Nixon of Sholame and Rochelle King of Arroyo Grande; three nephews; one niece; and many friends who she helped with her positive attitude.

Memorial contributions can be made to Make A Wish Foundation, 1450 Harbour Blvd., Suite F, West Sacramento 95691.

Arrangements are by McCune Garden Chapel.

Helen P. Thompson

Graveside services for Helen P. Thompson, 94, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills.

The retired Rev. D.E. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Born Dec. 28, 1902, in Indiana, Mrs. Thompson died Oct. 4, 1997, at Vacaville Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker for 57 years, and she enjoyed golf and fishing. She moved to Vacaville from Southern California six years ago.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by her brothers-in-law, Leslie of Vacaville, Joseph of Jonesboro, Ark., and Woodrow of Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W., in 1992.

Arrangements are by Vaca Hills Chapel in Vacaville.

Martina Alejo Tovar

Graveside services for Martina Alejo Tovar, 88, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

The Rev. Francisco Barajas of the Assembly of God will preside.

Born Dec. 22, 1912, in Mexico City, Mrs. Tovar died Oct. 10, 1997, in VacaValley Hospital after a long illness.

She had been self employed in retail sales. She was a resident of Vacaville for 15 years.

Mrs. Tovar is survived by her son, George Tovar Barron of Vacaville.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are by Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Luis Daniel Troche

Funeral services for Luis Daniel Troche, 32, of Suisun will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

The Rev. Luciano Valenzuela will preside.

Burial will be at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery. A rosary will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Born Feb. 12, 1965, in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Mr. Troche died Oct. 8, 1997, after a short illness.

He lived in Suisun City for 14 years.

He is survived by his mother, Blacina of Suisun City; sisters, Elizabeth Lysen of Orlando, Fla., Ivonne Martinez of Fairfield and Diana of Suisun City; and brothers, Felix Jr., Gaio and Marcos, all of Fairfield, Saul of Midway, Ga., and Josue of Darmstadt, Germany.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W.  Texas St. in Fairfield.

Rick Hamilton

A private memorial service will be held for Rick Hamilton, 55, a longtime auto mechanic in Vacaville.

Born to Warren and Opal (Wallace) Hamilton on Oct. 5, 1942, in Redondo Beach, he died Oct. 12, 1997, at his home in Harrington, Maine.

He served four years in the Navy and spent most of his adult life working as an auto mechanic in Vacaville. In December 1992 he moved to Harrington with his wife, Claudia, where they opened their business, Coastal Auto Specialties. He worked there until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia of Harrington; three children, Mindy Cobb and Rusty Hamilton, both of Vacaville, and Cindy Hamilton of Fairfield; two stepchildren, Aaron Decaillet of Santa Rosa and Cyndi Albee of Columbia Falls, Maine; six grandchildren, Caitlyn and Jenna Cobb and Megan Hamilton, all of Vacaville, and Jonathon, Sheila and Claire Albee, all of Columbia Falls; sister, Kathy Dahlin of Fairfield; brother, Norman "Rusty" Hamilton of Vacaville, and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Homes in Ellsworth, Maine.

Editha P. Sanchez

A Mass of Christian Burial for Editha P. Sanchez, 49, of Suisun City will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield.

The Rev. Luciano Valenzuela of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Catholic section of the Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Born June 27, 1948, in Malabon, Rizal, the Philippines, she died Oct. 11, 1997, at Kaiser Medical Center in Sacramento after a brief illness.

A 14-year resident of Suisun City, Mrs. Sanchez graduated from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, the Philippines, with a bachelor of science degree in business administration in banking and finance.

She moved to the United States in 1976 after working as a bank teller for the Banco Filipino Savings Bank.

She then worked in the Alameda County Social Services Department for four years.

Mrs. Sanchez was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir. She also was a member of the Disciple of Jesus Group, Couples for Christ, and Fil-Am Community.

She is survived by her husband, Pete, the vice mayor of Suisun City; daughters, Rhea and Rochelle, of Suisun; son, Robert, of Suisun; mother, Carmen Pali of Oakland; sisters, Elsie San Pedro of Hayward, Edna Pali of Oakland, Ellen Siragusa of North Carolina and twin sister, Nina De Alday of the Philippines; sister-in-law, Imelda Pali of Walnut Creek; mother-in-law, Epang Sanchez of Daly City; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. A rosary service will begin at 7 tonight at the church.

Diane Lee Stockton

Funeral services for Diane Lee Stockton, 49, of Fairfield will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

The Rev. Michael Downey will officiate. Burial will follow the funeral services.

Born July 22, 1948, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., Ms. Stockton died Oct. 10, 1997, in her residence after a long illness.

She had lived in Fairfield for 20 years.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Bill of Suisun City, and John and Nicole of Sebastopol; parents, Wayne and Theresa Deno of Westchazy, N.Y.; sisters, Jackie Boyette of North Carolina and Sandra of Westchazy, N.Y.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Connie Deno of Ausable Chasm, N.Y., and John and Tammy Deno, Bryan and Melissa Deno, and Jamie and Heather Deno, all of Westchazy, N.Y.; and granddaughter, Danielle Stockton of Sebastopol.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Lawrence Goodrow.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, with a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Pearl N. Rose

There will no formal service for Pearl N. Rose, 91, of Fairfield. Inurnment will be at Shiloh Cemetery in Birds Landing.

Born March 26, 1906, in Birds Landing, Mrs. Rose died Oct. 11, 1997, in Fairfield after a long illness.

She lived in Fairfield for 35 years. She was self employed, a seamstress at Miss Atises' Dress Shop in Rio Vista and a homemaker for 65 years. She was a member of the Pithian Sisters of Fairfield and Rebekah Lodge of Fairfield for 50 years.

Mrs. Rose is survived by her daughter, Patricia J. Focarace of Rio Vista; grandsons, James Richard Anderson of Luther, Mont., and John "Jack" Anderson of Rio Vista; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.
