KODANI, KIYOSHI "KODY" Born on Feb. 5, 1930 in Yuba City, CA. Passed away on Nov. 22, 2001 in Sacramento, CA. In 1942, he and his family were relocated to the internment camps at Tule Lake, CA. He was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1951. He was sent to attend the FEC Intelligence School at Fort Oro in Monterey, CA. Upon graduation, he was sent to the Korean War where he served as an interpreter in the Military Intelligence Unit. He was a resident of Sacramento since 1956. he worked at McClellan AFB for 33 years; he retired in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Hiroko; sons Felix, Gary, and Ray; daughter Patty; grandchildren Ray (Carissa) and Greg; great-grandson Brandon and great-granddaughter Serena. He is also survived by his brothers Keiji, Shosaburo, Don; and sister Misaki. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at 2:00PM at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento, 2401 Riverside Blvd.
KOTYLUK, MICHAEL 11/17/1910 - 11/25/2001 Survived by Stella Kotyluk, wife of 62 yrs. Preceded in death by a son Kenneth E. Kotyluk who was killed in Vietnam on April 24, 1968. Survived by son Ernie Kotyluk of Chico, Raymond Kotyluk of Woodland and daughter Michelle Herrera of Sacto. His siblings, Mary Didur, Olga Pawluk, Myron Kotyluk and Paul Kotyluk, all of Canada. 5 grandchildren, Lisa Adams, Amy Kotyluk, Kari Naquin, Tracy Kotyluk and Max Rasmussen. Two great grandchildren, Elijah and Michallah Kotyluk-Naquin. He leaves many nieces and nephews who reside in Canada and California. Before his move from Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada to Sacramento, he was a school teacher for 24 yrs. He was retired from the County of Sacramento. He enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with his family. Services will be on Friday, November 30, 2001 at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Mortuary, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks. LANE, JOHN E. In Sacramento, CA November 27, 2001, with his wife of 55 years, the former Orvada Flinn, at his bedside. John was born in Elwood, IN on April 12, 1926. At the age of 16, shortly after America's entry into World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served with the Second Marine Division stationed in New Zealand. He fought in three of the fiercest battles of the Pacific War: Tarawa (November 1943), Saipan (June 1944), and Tinian (July 1944). Mr. Lane later turned his war experience into the respected book "Bloody Tarawa" with co-author Eric M. Hammel. John moved to California in 1951, where he lived the rest of his life. He maintained his membership in Post 9627 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a 50-year member of Moore Lodge #303 F&AM and was a lifetime member and past president of the California Chapter of the Second Marine Division Association. Besides his wife, John is survived by three sons: Jack of Auburn, CA, Jim and John D., both of Sacramento, CA. Brother of Conrad Lane of Muncie, IN and Kay Lane of Antioch, CA. Grandfather of Jennifer Berger, Sharon Lane Davis, John L., Stephen, Joshua, David, Justin, Gabriel and Damon Lane. Great-grandfather of Breeze Davis and Zachary Lane. IN LOVING MEMORY OF LOVE SR., ALPHONZO LEON Born September 18, 1933 in Tishomingo, OK. Passed away November 25, 2001 in Sacramento, CA. Beloved companion of Carla Hancock. Loving father of Deborah L. Brooks, Cynthia D. Bullock, Alphonzo L. Love, Jr., David A. Love, Douglas E. Love and Tonice R. Berry. Dear grandfather of 7 and great-grandfather of 1. He is survived by his former wife, Thelma R. Love and sister, Ruth B. Love. Preceded in death by his father, Alvin Love, his mother, Burnett C. Love, his brothers, Alvin Love, Jr. and Alfred L. Love and his sister, Ida Love Barrington. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1958 as a Radar Operator, Alphonzo began employment with the State of California. He worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles as a computer programmer/analyst and managed the operations department. After leaving in 1975, he opened A. L. Love's Original Southern Smorgy restaurant in Sacramento. In 1978 he opened the Silver Palace in Old Sacramento. Two years later, Alphonzo purchased health food products company, Cornucopia. In 1981, he moved the company to Los Angeles and in 1993 he opened Southern Deli. In 1995, Alphonzo retired and returned to Sacramento. He used this time for volunteer work, taking classes and enjoying his family and friends. Alphonzo's legacy of hard work, kindness and dedication to his family will be remembered and admired by many. LYNN, TERRY Born May 29th, 1953. Died Nov. 25, 2001 from Diabetes. MAHONEY, MICHAEL E. Of Sacramento, passed away on Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, age 64. He is survived by his mother, Helen Whittington, sister Sharon Parlette, daughters Michele Stromick, Noelle Peterson, Claudine Ortiz and 10 grandchildren. Preceded in death by his father J. Emmett Mahoney. A Stanford graduate, his career as a lobbyist made him well known at the State Capitol. In his retirement he pursued his love of running and tennis, and was ranked within the top 10 players in his division for Northern California. He will be sadly missed by many relatives and friends. At his request, no services will be held. A gathering for family and friends will be arranged.
MALLORY, THELMA L. Born September 13, 1927 in Bellingham, WA. Passed away peacefully at home on November 23, 2001 at the age of 74. She was a longtime resident of North Highlands. Thelma worked for the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance 22 years before retiring in 1988. She was a lifetime member of VFW Auxilary 4647, Auxilary President 1971-72, and held other offices through the years. She was preceded in death by her mother, Flora Anderson, two brothers, Chuck Lancaster and Cliff Lancaster, and daughter-in-law, Linda Mallory. She is survived by three children, Joe Mallory of Brookings, OR., Patsy and Ralph Cornwell of Citrus Heights, and Jeff and Lori Mallory of North Highlands; sister-in-law, Betty Lancaster; eight grandchildren, Stephanie and Vaughn Harnden, Cheryl and Mike Fletcher, Sean and Peggy Mallory, Boise and Teresa Lawrence, Chad Cornwell, Jeremiah Mallory, Sara Cornwell, and Allison Mallory; and eight great-grandchildren, Ashley Harnden, Trevor Harnden, Dylon Harnden, Staci Lawrence, Boison Lawrence, Wayne Mallory, Marie Mallory, and Wyatt Mallory. A memorial service and wake will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2001 at 12 Noon, VFW Post 4647, 3300 U St., North Highlands, CA.
MAXWELL, KENNETH L. In loving memory of Kenneth L. Maxwell who passed away on November 10, 2001. Kenneth was born in Napa, California, raised in Modesto, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UC Berkeley in 1937 and moved to Sacramento that same year. He rose to Senior Supervising Statistician during his 40 year career with the State of California. He was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1938, serving in many roles including deacon, elder, Commissioner to General Assembly and Clerk of the Session. While with the State, he was a member and Chapter President of the California State Employees Association. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Virginia Maxwell of Sacramento; children, Ronald Maxwell, Faye Elizabeth Lyser and Edward Maxwell of Sacramento and Lois Hallen of Burlingame; and five grandchildren. He was buried at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson, near Modesto, on November 16, 2001. A memorial service will be held Saturday December 1, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. NORRIS, M.R. "BOB" Born Aug. 2, 1927 in Shennendoah, IA. Passed away 74 years, 3 months and 17 days later on Nov. 19, 2001. He is survived by his wife Frances, children David, Sharon and Linda, stepchildren Sharonn Buckman, Bill, Doug and Chuck Wagoner, and Jill Halvorson. Also survived by several grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He served in the Navy during WWII and moved to Sacramento in 1968. He managed a shoe store in San Jose and retired from Teledyne M.E.C. in 1990. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, and served as Master of Lodge #117 Concord and Three Pillars. He was also a member in good standing of the Ben Ali Shrine, Keystone Cop Patrol. Memorial services will be held Dec. 11, 2 to 6 PM in the clubhouse at Lakeview Village mobile home park, Citrus Heights, CA. NUTTER, JANE BONHAM Born June 10, 1920 in Stockton, California. Passed away November 21, 2001 in Roseville at the age of 81. Jane was preceded in death by her son, Glen. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Lloyd Nutter. Beloved mother of Scott Nutter and Bruce Nutter and his fiancee Maureen Newcome and Scott Nutter of Roseville. Cherished grandmother of Nicholas, Russell, and Andrea Nutter of Roseville. Loving twin sister of Alice Gates and sister-in-law to Bill Gates of Pacific Grove, California. She lived in the Roseville area for over 44 years. Tireless volunteer to numerous schools and organizations. She was always there when we needed her and never put herself first. We miss her grace and humility. She was a wonderful lady and will never be forgotten. No service at Jane's request.

PANGAN, JORGE S. Passed away in Sacramento on November 24, 2001. PETERSON, GLADYS H. Passed away peacefully on November 20th at the age of 92 in her Sacramento home with her two sons at her side. Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Ervin L. Peterson, a son and daughter in infancy, sister Frances Kettenring of Vancouver, Washington and brother Frank Haberlach of Clackamas, Oregon. Survived by sons E. Kent of Sacramento and Stephen F. of Seattle and cousins, nieces and nephews. Gladys was born to Frank and Anna (Tinnerstet) Haberlach on November 27, 1908 on the family farm in Clackamas, Oregon. Her unassuming, gentle nature and unselfishness belied the depth and richness of her life experiences. After a rich and happy childhood in Clackamas she graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in education. After attending graduate school at the University of Washington she began a career in education which included being Dean of Women and the Women's Varsity Basketball Coach at West Linn, Oregon. In her early thirties she met and married Ervin L. Peterson. They lived in Coquille, Oregon before moving to Salem, Oregon. When her husband entered state government upon giving birth to her children in Salem, she became a homemaker and loving provider to her family. From 1954 to 1967 her family resided in Bethesda, Maryland while her husband served in the federal government and subsequently in the private sector. In 1967 Gladys and Ervin moved to their home in Sacramento where has since resided except for a brief return to D.C. in the early 1970's. This unpretentious and gracious lady had the privilege of traveling throughout the world, had met the Pope, the President of the United States and many other dignitaries and world figures. Gladys was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority at U. of O. and for over a half a century was a member of P.E.O. the national woman's service organization in which she served in various leadership capacities. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sacramento. Gladys was a precious lady adored and deeply loved by her family and friends and who will miss her greatly. Family and friends are welcome to a final viewing from 9am to 11 am followed by a graveside service at 11am at the East Lawn Mortuary and Sierra Hills Memorial Park, 5757 Greenback Lane in Sacramento on Friday, November 30, 2001 and to a memorial service at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 N Street in Sacramento on Saturday, December 1st at 11 am. PORTA, THOMAS ANTHONY Retired, age 83, passed away November 24, 2001. He was the son of Thomas A. Porta and Marie "Mamie" Logamasino, brother of Louis Porta who passed away during WWII. Tom was born in Sutter Creek, CA on March 10, 1918. He was the loving husband of Rose Porta, loving father of Thomas A. Porta Jr. and Penny R. Burke, grandfather of Rodney Burke, Rhonda Takeuchi, Kelly Koster, Jenny Porta, and Ryan Burke, great grandfather of Jacob and Shayla. Also survived by nieces & nephews. He was a WWII Veteran and a 50 year member of Eagles #9, Past President of Rombulus Club and long time member of the Dante Club. Tom's hobbies were gardening and an avid "49er" fan. He was dedicated to his wife, Rose for 60 years. RICHARDSON, EARLINE L. Went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 23, 2001 in Sacramento, CA. Age 81 years, a native of Texas. Survived by her children, Ernest Richardson, Jr., Warah J. ROCKEY, ISABEL MARGARET Former Sacramento resident passed away October 30, 2001 in Oroville, CA at the age of 89. Isabel was born May 21, 1912 in Mandan, North Dakota to Joseph and Philomena Riedinger. She attended Mandan schools and married Francis C. Rockey, December 15, 1931. She lived in many areas of the U.S. and in the Philippines as her husband was in the U.S. Army. The family moved to Sacramento in 1950. Her husband, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Francis C. Rockey, preceded her in death in 1986. Isabel resided in Sacramento until 1993 when she moved to Oroville, CA to live near her daughter. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, sewing, crocheting, and loved animals. She was especially fond of cats, and fed and took care of many strays later in her life. She is survived by her daughter, Pennie Bridget Shelby of Oroville, and her son, Francis C. Rockey, Jr. of Knightdale, North Carolina. At her request, arrangements were handled through The Neptune Society of Northern CA. Family services will be held at a later date. The family requests that donations in her name be made to any SPCA or humane organization.
SALTER, SHIRLEY F. In Sacramento, November 17, 2001. Loving mother of Diana Salter of Elverta, Ray Salter of Sacramento, Frances Artau of Elk Grove and Wesley Salter of Alaska. Devoted grandmother to Glenn, Megan, Devory, Nicole, Miles, Savanna and Zachary. Great grandmother of Janelle. Beloved sister of Leota Bacon of Rancho Murieta, Dorothy Neely of Wilton and Holly Wisdom of Elk Grove. Also survived by numerous other loving relatives and friends. A resident of the Elk Grove area all her life, aged 67 years. In her school years she belonged to the 4-H Club and tennis team at Elk Grove High School, graduating in 1952. She was also a graduate of Sacramento City College, a member of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society, Sutter Stutters Walking Club, Florin Mall Walkers, gold member of Sports Leisure Vacations, Red Hats and many other groups and clubs. Shirley was a loyal and thoughtful friend and loved by all who knew her. Her passions in life were books, music, education, genealogy, learning and passing on her wisdom to others. She enjoyed teas, hummingbirds and sunflowers. She gave so much and will be in our hearts forever. SCHIERZ, EDITH CANOTE Age 92, born in Norfolk, Nebraska on January 25, 1909. Died in Sacramento, California on November 28, 2001. Edith and her family moved to Stockton in 1925. She graduated from Stockton High School in 1926. She met and married Theodore Peterson in 1928 and they had 3 children. Edith is the beloved mother of June Haflich and husband John, Robert Peterson and wife Gail, of Sacramento and Joanne Turnquist and husband Kenneth, of Yorba Linda, California. Preceded in death by her loving husband, John H. Schierz and one granddaughter. She was a proud grandmother of 12, great-grandmother of 25 and great-great-grandmother of 7. Edith lived most of her adult life in Stockton, Ca. She worked at Mor-Pak cannery as the office manager for 30 years. In 1950 she married John Schierz and moved to French Camp, Ca. They were very active in the Grange and the Chamber of Commerce, where Edith served as secretary. She and her husband moved to Rosevile, Ca. in 1986. Friends are welcome for visitation on Saturday, December 1, 2001 from 2-3PM prior to the Funeral service at 3PM, all in the Evergreen Chapel of Cherokee Memorial Park, Hwy 99 & E. SCHULTZ, ALAN H. Born March 4, 1942, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Passed away November 23, 2001 in Sacramento. Survived by beloved wife Patricia Schultz, son John Schultz, and daughters Kimberly Okino and Andrea Emerson. He also leaves behind grandchildren Kiana Okino, Karen Nicole Schultz, and Cole James Schultz. Alan joined the Army in 1959 and served in Germany. He lived in Southern California and moved to Sacramento seventeen years ago. He was self employed as the owner of Alan's River City Transmission. SHORT, MARY VIRGINA Friend and champion of persons with developmental disabilities, born in Princeton Missouri August 20, 1928 passed on at UC Medical Center November 22, 2001. Preceded in death by mother Hildred Hill-Elliott, her cherished pets Helen, Norman & Madam Chang. Survived by husband retired state Senator Alan Short, Sacramento and brother Sherman Hill of Kansas City, Missouri. Though she had no children of her own, her "babies" were Bonnie Ritchie of Sonora and Laura Hayward of Sacramento. Her "family" of friends who loved her and will deeply miss her are Michael Ritchie, Santa Rosa, Sarah Ritchie, Sonora, Perry & Eli McCauley, Flagstone Arizona, Lorraine Short, Stockton, Amy Nishimura and Margaret Clemens, Sacramento. She was a special lady to all who knew or met her. Mary enjoyed photographing the "winners" at Special Olympics, founded the "Very Special Art Show", a statewide art exhibit of work by persons with developmental disabilities, and founded the Short Centers in Sacramento and Stockton, which offer persons with developmental disabilities the opportunity to experience creativity through the arts. Mary had many different aspects to her personality. She was gentle, kind, had a sharp wit, boundless energy, and a "photographer's eye" through which she saw beauty where others could not. Special thanks to Dr. Reginald Low for his support during Mary's illness. A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, November 29, 2001 at 10:00AM in the Yuki Gardens at 2331 St. Marks Way, Sacramento.
