Claire Howell
Aug. 16, 1952 -- July 26, 2002
Claire Nordeen Howell, 49, died July 26 at her home in Fairfield after a long illness.
Mrs. Howell, also known as "Claire-Bear," was born in San Francisco, and was a Fairfield resident most of her life.
Mrs. Howell graduated from Armijo High School in 1970, and Diablo Valley College in 1972, where she received her A.A. degree.
She worked as a dental lab technician for 15 years, and in 1988, devoted her time to being a stay-at-home mom.
Mrs. Howell enjoyed skiing, traveling, gardening, cooking and volunteer work.
She was preceded in death by her father, Richard William Nordeen, DDS in 1989.
Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Michael of Fairfield; son, Matthew of Fairfield; mother, Julia Nordeen of Fairfield; sister, Jeanine Nordeen of Vallejo; twin sister, Lauren Lindley of Vacaville; brother, Richard Nordeen of Springfield, Ore.; one niece and three nephews.
Memorial service will be held, 11 a.m. August 3 at Grace Episcopal Church in Fairfield.

Theodore Petersen
Oct. 5 1918 -- May 31, 2002
Theodore M. Petersen, 83, died Friday at his home in Vallejo after a long illness.
Mr. Petersen, also known as Pete, was a native of North Dakota and a resident of Vallejo for more than 55 years.
He served with the United States Army and was a disabled veteran of World War II. He received several medals of accommodation including the Purple Heart.
Mr. Petersen worked for the Vallejo Transit Lines as a supervisor/mechanic for more than 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his daughters, Debra Whitemore, Kathy Marler and sister Alice.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Gloria of Vallejo; son, Albert (Dina) Watson of Simi Valley; brothers, Carl and Max Petersen; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
At his request private family services were held. Burial was in All Souls Catholic Cemetery, Vallejo.
Arrangements were under the direction of Twin Chapels Mortuary.
Contributions may be made to Kaiser Hospice Program in Vallejo.
David Vick
July 14, 1917 -- March 12, 2003
David Thomas Vick, 85, died March 12 while visiting his daughter, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia, after a long illness.
He was born in Fort Smith, Ark., and lived in Vallejo for 35 years before moving to Citrus Heights in 1984.
Mr. Vick was a sheet metal worker for Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 30 years before retiring in 1979. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a member of the Scottish Rite in Sacramento, Consistory Orient of California and San Juan Masonic Lodge No. 732 in Citrus Heights.
Mr. Vick loved to hunt and fish.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell in April 2002.
Mr. Vick is survived by his daughter, Edith Wright of Springsfield, Va.; son, David of Saudi Arabia; sister, Opal Gilmore of Oakdale; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m., March 27 at Wiggins-Knipp Funeral Home, Vallejo. A funeral will be held 11 a.m., March 28 at the mortuary, with Masonic Naval Lodge No. 87 F&AM officiating. Burial at Sunrise Memorial Cemetery, Vallejo.

Lester Avellar
March 11, 1919 -- July 23, 2002
Lester C. Avellar, 83, of Rocklin, died at his granddaughter's home July 23, after a long illness.
A native of Stevenson, Mr. Avellar was a former Vallejo resident.
He was the owner/operator of Crystal Meat Market in Vallejo, he also worked at the Safeway Meat Plant in Richmond as a meat cutter.
Mr. Avellar was a World War II veteran, and a member of the 65th Bomb Squadron. He was also a member of St. Basil's the Great Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Redman's Lodge.
He enjoyed fishing.
Mr. Avellar is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth "Betty" of Rocklin; daughters, JoAnn Calligan of Rocklin, Linda Burnett of Redding; and Lori of Vallejo; sons, Larry Razzano of Greeley Hill; Jerry of Mountain View; Paul of Half Moon Bay; Norman of Santa Cruz; grandchildren, Michael, Tony, Matt, Ryan, Kimberly and five great-grandchildren.
Vigil services will be held 7 p.m., July 28 at Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m., July 29 at St. Basil's Catholic Church, Vallejo. Burial will follow at All Souls Catholic Cemetery, Vallejo.
Donations may be sent to Alzheimer's Association or the American Heart Association.
Joyce Mascarenas
Aug. 13, 1939 -- March 22, 2003
Joyce Ilene O'Dell Mascarenas, 63, died Saturday in Placerville after a long battle with lung cancer.
She was a resident of the Vallejo/Benicia area for 51 years.
She attended Vallejo High School and graduated with the class of 1957. She received her cosmetology license in 1959, then went to work and later became part owner of the Beauty Den Salon. She took up bookkeeping in the late 1960s, working for R&K Const. Co., Deltec and Gist all of Benicia. She relocated with Gist to the Placerville area in 1990 where her illness forced her to retire in 1999.
Survivors include her sister, Pat Hammond of Somerset, and her children, Pam of Benicia; Ron (Ren/) of Sebastopol; Mike (Beth) of Healdsburg, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on 3/30/03 at the Placerville Town Center, 549 Main St., Placerville.
Donations in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
