Joseph Wright
Feb. 8, 1921 -- Nov. 16, 2002
Joseph Wayne Wright, 81, died Nov. 16 at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center - Vallejo after a brief illness.
Mr. Wright, also known as "Joe," was born in Vardeman, Miss., and had been a Vallejo resident since 1957.
He was a construction foreman for Siri Construction for 22 years, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Wright was a member of Castlewood Baptist Church and the Local Carpenters Union 180.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Irma of Vallejo; two stepdaughters, his son, Todd of Washington and four grandchildren.
Private inurnment.

Peter Caballero
May 5, 1905 -- March 31, 2002
Peter Valpariso Caballero, 97, died Sunday at a Vallejo hospital after a long illness.
He was born in the Philippines and lived in Vallejo for 85 years.
Mr. Caballero worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter for 30 years, retiring in 1972.
Survivors are his wife, Mary of Vallejo; daughters, Dolores Rosslyn of Vallejo; Ruth Byrne of Washington; Rebecca (Terry) Butts of American Canyon; sons, Carl (Adele), Melvin and Gabriel (Nelia) all of Vallejo; 23 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be held 5 p.m., Saturday at Kingdom Hall, 11 Melvin Road, American Canyon. Eld. Vincent Caballero of Fairfield Jehovah Witness Church will be officiating. Private inurnment.

Louis Malroy
(March 2, 1920 - April 19, 2001)
Louis Ray Malroy, 81, died Thursday in San Pablo.
Mr. Malroy was born in Kentucky and was a self-employed auto mechanic for 40 years. He served in the Army and was a member of VFW #913 in Richmond. Mr. Malroy enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include his wife, Vera M. of Vallejo; and sister, Ferndell Malray of San Pablo.
No services were held. Arrangements by Wilson and Kratzer Mortuaries, Richmond.
Theoplis Tolliver III
(Dec. 8, 1965 -June 6, 2001)
Theoplis Charles Tolliver III, 35, died Wednesday, June 6.
Mr. Tolliver, commonly known as "Tee," was born in Vallejo and was a Vallejo resident. He was self-employed for three years.
Survivors include daughters, Angelivia, Tashawna, Talaun, Tastasia, and Christy; sons, Theoplis IV and Theoplis V; mother, Rosemary; grandmother, Easter Paggett; sister, Marie (Rita) Jones; and brother, Artis Green.
Visitation was held Thursday at Manigault Mortuary, Vallejo. Memorial, 11 a.m. Friday at Manigault Mortuary, with Pastor Robert McCrary officiating. Private disposition.
James Kurtz
(June 22, 1913 - July 15, 2001)
James "Jim" Kurtz of Benicia, 88, died July 15 at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
Born in Randlett, Utah, he later lived in Grants Pass, Oregon, where he attended high school. After graduating from the University of Oregon, he found employment with Mare Island Naval Shipyard in the industrial relations field. He worked there from 1941 to 1977 when he retired.
Mr. Kurtz had been a Benicia resident since 1956, he served on the Benicia Civil Service Commission prior to his seat on the Benicia City Council. During his tenure from 1968 to 1972. He felt his most significant achievements were helping to secure the 9th and 12th street parks for the residents of Benicia.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Benicia where he volunteered in a variety of areas. Over several years he contributed time and talent to the success of the Peddlers Fair. He was one of the original founders of Toast Masters in Benicia, of which he enjoyed participating.
Survivors include his wife, Grace; sister, Reatha La Barbera; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Aug. 18, 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Benicia. All family and friends are welcome to attend. Arrangements made by Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia.

Gloria De Shields
(March 15, 1942 -- Nov. 14, 2001)
Gloria J. De Shields, 59, died Thursday at Sutter Solano Medical Center after a long illness.
A native of Idaho, Mrs. Shields lived in Vallejo and was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and writing poetry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar on Dec. 18, 1999, her father, Farl Harris; sister, Karen Harris and brother Dale Harris.
She is survived by her daughters, Leah and Serene both of Vallejo; Rachel of Atlanta; sons, Aaron and Mark of Vallejo; mother, Edna Anderson of Sonoma; sisters, Marilyn Severson of Sonoma; Ellen Harris of Idaho; brothers, Danny and David Harris of Idaho and nine grandchildren.
At her request no services will be held, private inurnment.

Kenneth Kleven
Sept. 2, 1923 -- May 22, 2002
Kenneth James Kleven, 78, died May 22 at his home in Benicia.
A native of Oakland, Mr. Kleven was born in 1923 to Robert and Mabel Kleven. He attended St. Cyril's Elementary School and later graduated from Fremont High School.
A pioneer of Bay Area Youth Baseball, he became involved with the first Oakland Little League in 1954. His involvement lead to his participation with the Young America, Babe Ruth and American Legion programs. In 1966, he was manager of the National Championship Bill Erwin American Legion Post 337 baseball team that won the American Legion World Series.
A picture of the team hangs in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. He was also one of the early organizers and coaches of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Youth Organizations (CYO).
After an honorable discharged from the U.S. Navy, he began a 40-year career with the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. At that time he married his wife, Mary Frances Albers, who preceded him in death in 1976. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gerald.
From 1984 until his death, he enjoyed retirement life in Benicia with his surviving wife, Juliana. He enjoyed taking annual trips to Arizona for spring training with the Oakland A's.
Other survivors include his sons, Michael James, Paul Francis, Gregory John, Gary Edward and Kurt Stephen; stepchildren, Art Kielty and Pam Conrad; sister, Katy Farrell; nine grandchildren, one great-grandson and numerous nieces, nephews and other family.
A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m., June 8 at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, 901 West 2nd St., Benicia. Private inurnment.
