LYDIA SCHULDIES
May 23, 1909- Oct. 7, 2006
Longtime Westwood resident and matriarch of the Westwood Baptist Church, Lydia Schuldies, peacefully passed from this life to her eternal home with the Lord Saturday evening, Oct. 7, 2006 at the Long Term Care Facility of the Seneca Health Care District located in Chester,  Calif.
Born 97 years ago as one of twelve children to German immigrants George and Katherine (Kurtz) Roemer in Sugar City, Idaho, Lydia was raised and educated in Sugar City.
She married Henry Gray in Idaho and the young couple moved to the Northeastern California logging community of Westwood in 1928 where they both worked in Red River Lumber Company’s mill. Lydia became highly active with the former Rebecca Lodge, of Westwood, where she twice served the organization as president, as well as becoming a charter member of the Westwood Baptist Church where she fellowshipped until it’s recent closing.
Lydia later married longtime family friend Phillip Schuldies, of Westwood. The two together owned and operated the Westwood Bowling Alley until Phil’s passing in 1982. Lydia continued operation until retiring in 1985.
Lydia was an accomplished seamstress who enjoyed sewing clothes for family and friends while also finding great pleasure in working in her flower garden.
Lydia leaves in passing her daughter, Vera Young, of Westwood,  Calif.; son, LeRoy Schuldies, of Westwood,  Calif.; brothers, Alex Roemer, of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Harold Roemer, of Rupert, Idaho; sister, Rose Ray, of Placerville,  Calif.; grandson, Mike Young Sr.; great grandchildren, April, Jenny, Rebecca, Mike Jr. and Niel, along with her great great- grandchildren; Mia, David, Monique and Logan.
She joins in the presence of the Lord her dear husband, Phil, granddaughter, Patricia “Trish” Young, grandson, Dean Schuldies, four brothers and four sisters.
A celebration of Lydia’s life took place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006 at the Westwood Bible Fellowship (formerly the Westwood Baptist Church), with private family interment following in the Westwood Cemetery. The family suggests any remembrances in Lydia’s memory be made to the Long Term Care Unit of the Seneca Health Care District, c/o Fehrman Mortuary and Crematory, P.O. Box 803, Greenville, CA.

EUNICE H. BUESCHER
Eunice H. Buescher passed away at her home on Oct. 12, 2006 from complications of colon cancer. She was born on Dec. 31, 1930 in Appleton, Minn., to Miles and Alice Cunningham. She was a graduate of the University of Minnesota. She began a long teaching career in Williams, Ariz., in 1952 and then moved to Bakersfield in 1954 where she taught junior high school and met and married her husband, Jack, in 1955. They moved to Susanville in 1956.
Mrs. Buescher taught for many years as an elementary schoolteacher in the Susanville School District. She retired from teaching in 1988. She remained actively involved in many local volunteer activities and charities, including tax preparation for senior citizens. She also served as a volunteer bookkeeper for the Susanville Methodist Church. She and her husband, Jack, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 27, 2005.
She is lovingly survived by her husband, Jack, of Susanville; 3 daughters, Brenda of San Mateo,  Calif., Barbara of Granite Bay,  Calif. and Kathleen of Folsom,  Calif.; son-in-law, William Leveille, and grandchildren Justine and Andrew Leveille also of Folsom. Memorial services were held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at the United Methodist Church.

PHILLIP “BRANDON" WILLIAMS
Former Susanville resident Phillip “Brandon’ Williams, son of South Lake Tahoe Police Sergeant Phillip “Brad” Williams, was killed in action on Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, while serving as a Military Police Officer in Baghdad, Iraq. Brandon was attached to the 101st Airborne, 506th Military Police. Brandon’s MP Unit protects Explosive Ordinance Disposal personnel dispatched to handle roadside bombs and other improvised explosive devices. After being dispatched to handle such a situation, Brandon’s unit began taking sniper fire. Tragically, Brandon was killed.
Brandon was born in Yuba City,  Calif., in 1985. He moved to South Lake Tahoe as a toddler, when his father was hired as a South Lake Tahoe Police Officer. Brandon was preschool aged when the family moved to Gardnerville, Nev. Brandon grew up in Gardnerville.
He received his diploma from Douglas High School in 2005, whereupon he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. Brandon wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps in law enforcement, and signed up for the Military Police. He was dispatched to serve in Baghdad, Iraq.
Brandon is survived by his father, Sergeant Brad Williams of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, his mother Lisa Hall of Minden, Nev., his brother Aaron of Stateline Nevada, his brother Justin, a U.S. Marine stationed in  Washington D.C.; and his sister Amy, of Minden, Nev.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

MARTY SAVELY
Marty Savely, 66, formerly of Susanville, died in Union, Ore., on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006.
He was born Nov. 25, 1939, in Red Bluff,  Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife Norma in May 2006.
He is survived by his children Shirley Savely of Union, Butch and Susan Savely of Kasilof, Sheila and Bob McGarva of Westwood and John and Debbie Savely of Union.
He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandsons.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006 at the Los Molinas Cemetery in Los Molinas,  Calif. A gathering will follow at the Veterans Hall in Los Molinas.

CHRISTINE V. BEARD
Christine V. Beard, devoted wife, loving mother and friend passed away on Oct. 3, 2006. Christine was born on Dec. 10, 1952 in Santa Monica,  Calif., to Lawrence and Fahn Varin. The family relocated to Oregon where Chris was raised and graduated from Southern Oregon College.
In 1981, Chris moved to Lassen County, where she began a 17-year career for Lassen County, first in the lowest paid administrative position at the Drug and Alcohol Program and then, through hard work and dedication she worked her way to Deputy County Administrator.
In 1983 she met her future husband and life partner Michael Beard. They married Sept. 20, 1985 and have shared a loving partnership for more than 21 years, building their dream house together, nestled in the pines of Lassen County.
Christine greatly enjoyed her years as a member of the Kiwanis Club.
She had many hobbies, including photography, crocheting, sewing, working in the garden, many arts and crafts, and spending time with family and friends.
Christine was preceded in death by her parents Lawrence and Fahn Varin, and will be laid to rest with them in Southern Oregon. She is survived by her loving husband Michael Beard, daughter Heather and her husband Drew McDermott, and daughter Michelle Beard, brother Dennis Varin, brother Wesley and his wife Marsha Varin, sister Valerie and her husband Rocky Tarchione, nephew Troy and his wife Jode Tarchione, niece Torrie Tarchione and her husband Doug, nephew Travis and his wife Tina Tarchione, nephew Toby Varin, nephew Randy and his wife Candy Varin, nephew Mathew Varin, niece Sierra Varin, and many great-nieces and nephews.
Christine enriched the lives of those who knew and loved her and will leave countless memories that we can enjoy forever.
Walton’s Colonial Mortuary is handling funeral arrangements.
A memorial service was held at the Susanville United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Lassen and Cottage streets at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 9. Pastor Doug McCoy officiated.
A reception followed at the church.
Those wishing to make charitable donations in Christine’s name can do so to the Susanville Kiwanis Club.

RUBY LEE MCCARTNEY
Ruby Lee McCartney passed away on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills. Ruby came to Susanville in 1937 at the age of 16. She completed her high school education here. During the war, she worked at Herlong before marriage.
Ruby enjoyed participating in the Easter Star for many years. Quilting by hand and crocheting was a favorite past time as well as taking upholstery classes at Lassen Community College. Ruby enjoyed fishing and rock hunting. In the late 50s and 60s, she took time to interview old-timers in the area to preserve local history.
Ruby is survived by 3 daughters, Chery Dieter and her husband Richard, of Warren, Ore., Sheila Miner, of Susanville,  Calif., and step-daughter Glita Jean Perry and her husband George, of Idaho; two sons, George McCartney and his wife LaWanna, of Montisamo, Wash.; and a step-son Bill Reuck, of Lassen County.
Graveside services were held at Diamond Crest Cemetery on Monday, Oct. 9, 2006.
