ROLAND L. LONG
Roland Lee Long, 80, on Aug. 24 at his Susanville residence of 42 years. He was born Aug. 8, 1924 as one of children born to John Henry and Rebecca Jane Long. Long joined the U.S. Army during World War II in 1943. After serving his term in the Army he came to Tulare, Calif., where he met his bride of 55 years, Joan M. Kimbriel. They met on a blind date in 1948 and married later that year. They had two daughters, Karen L. Dowden and Donna L. Johnson. Long he and his family then moved to Susanville in 1962. He began his retirement at age 64, but that didn't slow him down. He loved the great outdoors involving fishing, hunting, camping, avid rock hounding, making homemade Indian arrowheads, deer antler knives and spears, gardening, back yard mechanics, woodworking, picking on his guitar, yard saleing and, most important, spending time with all of his family and friends. Long is survived by his wife, Joan Mildred Long and daughters; Karen Lynn Dowden and Donna Lee Johnson, three sisters, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a Veteran Service at Diamond Crest Cemetery
at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4 and directly after at noon all family and friends are invited to meet for a potluck luncheon at the Lassen County Veterans Memorial Hall, located at 1205 Main St. (Memorial Building). The family requests all donations be given to Lassen County Veteran's Memorial Hall, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or Honey Lake Hospice in his name.
FRED PENCE
Robert Frederick "Fred" Pence, 68, died Thursday, Aug. 26 in First Health Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, NC. Pence was born in Enid, Okla. on Nov. 1, 1935, son of the late George E. and Thelma Williams Pence. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a sales manager for 34 years with Nabisco Foods before retiring to Whispering Pines from El Cerrito, Calif. in 1992. He was an avid golfer and a proud member of the Family of God who was always willing to help a friend or neighbor in need. He was very gifted mechanically, loved sports and collected tools. He is survived by his wife, Lyn "Lynita" Neely Pence; son, Mark E. Stevens of Texarkana, Tex.; daughter, Linda Micklin of Austin, Tex.; brothers, George Pence, Jr. of Whispering Pines, Dale Pence of Lincoln, Calif.; sister, Carolyn Sue Unterreiner of Susanville and several nieces and nephews in the Susanville area. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Grace Church in Southern Pines, NC with Pastor Randy Thornton officiating. Memorials may be made to Grace Church, P.O. PEARL BOHNING
Pearl Bohning, of Herlong passed away at the age of 81 on Oct. 21. Born Pearl Laverne Coon to Jay and Meta Coon on June 22, 1923, she was raised and graduated high school in Huron South Dakota. She worked as a welder in the Portland, Ore., shipyard prior to relocating to Herlong with her husband Lee Bohning in 1945. Pearl entered into government service as a patrolman at Sierra Army Depot and retired in 1978 as Assistant Traffic Manager in the Traffic Management Division. At a young age Pearl started fishing with her father Jay and as an adult loved to go camping and could fish for hours at a time. She also loved to garden.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Pearl is survived by son Robert, of Reno, gentleman friend Jerry Kesterson, of Herlong, brother Everett Coon, of Montour, Iowa, sister Cherry Mae (Roland) Amick, of Woonsocket, SD. and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lee, three sisters and one brother.
Services were held on Friday, Oct. 29 at the LDS Church Susanville Road, Herlong.
MARION EUGENE BRAZELL
After having fought bravely the diseases that weakened his body, Marion Eugene "Gene" "Butch" Brazell passed peacefully on Oct. 17, surrounded by his family, at Madigan Army Medical Center.
Gene was born on Jan. 4, 1943 in Barnwell, SC to Earl Brazell and Mary Tyler Brazell Rager. At the age of six, he moved to California with his family. In Susanville he met Kathleen Graham; they were married on Feb. 23, 1963.
Gene served honorably in the U.S. Army for 27 years. During that time, Gene, Kathie and their three children made their home in many places, including Okinawa, Germany, California, Maryland and Panama. In 1988 he retired from the Army.
During their travels Gene became active in scouting; he served as a cub master, a scout master and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. Gene also provided support to the Girl Scouts whenever they asked; he was most fond of helping the Girl Scouts dispose of many boxes of Thin Mints.
From 1988-2004, Gene proudly worked for Boeing.
Gene was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather Charles Rager, sister Sally Brazell Campbell and brother Robert Brazell.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years; his children, Jane, Rodney (Heather) and Cynthia Flint; his four beautiful grandchildren, Robert, Christopher and Daniel Flint, and Rebecca Brazell; his brother, Tommy Lee Brazell; and numerous friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Wednesday, Oct. 20, from noon-9 p.m. Graveside services were at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 at Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Gene's name to the Pacific Harbors Boy Scout Council and/or Pacific Peaks Girl Scout Council.

RICHARD GONI
Richard Goni was born Dec. 2, 1932, in Wellington, Nev. and entered into rest at his home in Susanville on Oct. 27.
He attended elementary and junior high school in Reno, Nev. before moving to Susanville with his mother and brother in 1947. He was a graduate of Lassen High School (class of 1950).
After attending St. Mary's College for a short time he enlisted in the Navy in 1952.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Angelina Goni. Also surviving are his brother Eugene Goni and his family, son and daughter-in-law Maurice and Connie Goni, three daughters Michelle Zubillaga, Jeanette Goni, Yvette Neely and son-in-law Darin Neely, all of Susanville, 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
Richard and his family owned and operated the St. Francis Hotel for 53 years before retiring in June 2000.
Throughout the years Richard was involved in several community activities and organizations including the Susanville Elks, Susanville Basque Club, Susan River Fire Department, lifetime member of Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Reno Zazpiak Bat Basque Club and participated in, attended and sponsored various athletic events in the community.
Services for Richard were a Rosary Sunday, Oct. 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Mass at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, with a burial to follow at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Richard's name to either the Lassen High School Alumni Association or Athletics Department at Lassen High School, 1110 Main St. Attn: Activities Office.
HENRY (HANK) CHARLES TILFORD
Henry Charles Tilford (Hank) born Sept. 24, 1923 in Seligman, Miss., entered into rest on Oct. 23.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maxine, his son Johnny and daughter-in-law Randee Tilford, of Fremont; daughter-in-law Carol Tilford, of Quincy; daughter Connie and her husband Rod Theobald, of Westwood. He was preceded in death by his son Jimmie Tilford, of Quincy who passed in 2003. He has seven grandchildren, Brian Tilford and wife Shelley, of Westwood; Jeff Tilford and wife Nancy, of Newark; Jimmie Tilford Jr. and wife Lisa, of Quincy; Jason Theobald, of Chico and Ronnie Theobald, also of Chico. There are 11 great-grandchildren, Josh Tilford, of Chico; Megan and Morgan Tilford, of Westwood; Jarrett, Madisyn and Joel Tilford, of Newark; Lily Tilford, of southern Calif.; Kyle and Haley Tilford, of Quincy; Maddison and Jackson Fripp, of Walnut Creek.
A celebration of life was held in loving memory on Oct. 27.
Henry and Maxine were married on Dec. 23, 1943 in Modesto. On Oct. 19, 1944, their first son, Johnny was born and on Sept. 29, 1945, their second son, Jimmie was born. Fifteen years later, on April 19, 1961, a daughter, Connie was born. He and his family moved to Westwood to work for Fruit Growers from 1951-1956. He moved back to Westwood in 1970 and worked in several jobs including running Hank's Coffee Shop from 1970-1972 with his wife Maxine. His last job was working for the county as a maintenance and grounds keeper before retiring at the age of 62. He had several hobbies, both the love of country music and its creation as Hank played several stringed instruments including the guitar and the fiddle. He was passionate about both rodeos and stock car racing, would often take his family and friends with him to the shows. He was an active member of American Legion and the Masonic Lodge for many years. He had a great love for life, family, friends and enjoyed every minute given to him. His love will forever live in the hearts of his family, friends and all those who knew him.
