Lois Neal McVicar, 75, of Susanville, died on Monday, June 16, 2003, at her daughter's home in Wilder, Idaho. She was born on Feb. 16, 1928 in Westwood, to Mary Monroe and Percy James McVicar. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1945. She is survived by her daughter and husband, Wendy and Charles King of Wilder; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Maryann Kidder of Umatilla, Ore.; sister, Frida Owens of Tonaska, Wash., six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. No services are planned.
Barbara Vincent, 77, died on Friday, Sept. 19, 2003. She was born to Charles and Emma Lanigar Evans on May 21, 1926. Her family celebrates her cordial smile, generous attitude and giving nature. She shared her childhood with brother, Dwaine Evans. She married Homer L. Vincent and had two children, , Charles Homer Vincent and Linda Blevins. She had a wonderful relationship with her children, great-grandchildren, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to thank the Circle of Life hospice for their loving care and support. A private graveside service will be held at Janesville Cemetery, Janesville. In lieu of flowers, make donations to Circle of Life Hospice, 1575 DeLucchi Lane, Suite 214, Reno, NV 89502. Marjorie Jeanette Walters, 85, died on Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, in Roseville, Calif. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on July 26, 1918. With a zest for life, Walters worked in a variety of industries. She worked on jet engines during the early 1950s, gaining the nickname, "Jet," later as a legal secretary an executive secretary for the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce and finally, retiring as the coordinator of Lassen County Mental Health. She was a longtime member of the Eagle Lake Sailing Association. Traveling, boating, water skiing and sailing were a passion of hers, water skiing into her 60s when she was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a very rare muscle disease. She lived in Susanville from 1961 until her health began to fail in 2000. She then moved to Orangevale, Calif. to be closer to her children and resided at FountainWood until her death. She married Raymond Hansen in 1938 being chosen as the "Bride of the Season" in New York and John Winder in 1965. They both preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Judy Metz, Bruce Hansen, Jeff Hansen, Lisa O'Callaghan and Craig Hansen of New York; sister, Carolyn of New York; stepchildren, Tom Winder, Brooke Cunningham and Peter Winder. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one nephew and several nieces. The family requests that remembrances be made to the Myasthenia Gravis foundation. Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
Earl L. Honea, 87, died on Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Banner Lassen Medical Center. He was born on Oct. 2, 1915 in Poteau, Okla. He moved from Arkansas before coming to Susanville to got work as a timber faller for Fruit Growers Supply Company for 40 years. He was a resident of Lassen County for the past 61 years. He loved the woods and being in the woods. He was actively involved in his children and grandchildren's lives by always attending their sports games, also as a Little League coach. He helped initiate Little League in Susanville and was also involved in Susanville Merchants Sports. He was very dedicated to his wife Pearl and more attentive to her needs during the last years of her life by always providing her meals and comfort. He was a very generous person willing to help anybody in need. He was known on many occasion to provide a cord of firewood, or a ride to anyone who was in need or someone he just met. He always looked forward to any type of family gathering, especially the annual Rippetoe-Honea-Hyatt family reunion. He is survived by sons; Bob of Lodi, Calif., Don Stockton, Calif., Alvin of Carson City and Richard of Parker, Colo.; daughter, Diann Jackson of Susanville; brother, A.J. of Fontana, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-children. A chapel service was held at the Gospel Tabernacle Church on Thursday, Sept. 18. Burial followed at Diamond Crest Cemetery
where he was interred with his wife, Pearl.
Doris Dillon, 91, died on Sept. 16, 2003, at Banner Lassen Medical Center. She was born in Coos Bay, Ore. She moved to Susanville in 1989 from Mt. Shasta. She was a housewife and a very good mother and she loved children and was an animal lover. She had a smile that would melt your heart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry in 1984 and daughter, Doris Ellen Bidzah in 1985, sisters Bonnie from Quincy and Billie from New York, her brothers Luke from Paradise; Herb and Malcolm from Redondo Beach. She is survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Marion Louise Bowen, 89, died at Indian Valley Health Care facilities Long Term Care Unit on July 7, 2003. Marion was born to Daniel and Kari Johnson Vieneau in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on March 21, 1914. She had been a resident of Indian Valley since moving there from Livermore in 1990. She had retired as the operations manager's secretary for General Electric Corporation after 34 years of service. She enjoyed reading, as well as knitting, and was a fan of James Bond movies. She took pleasure in caring for animals, especially her dogs. She was preceded in death by her parents; her children, Richard Bowen and Karen Eppeneder; and two brothers. Marion is survived by her grandchildren, Kari Johnson of Susanville, Lisa Balbiani of Indian Valley and Christine Bowen of Hollister; and five great-grandchildren. Karen Elizabeth Checkan, 69, of Cottonwood, died on July 15, 2003, in an automobile accident. Karen was born on Dec. 5, 1933, in New York City, N.Y. She moved to the Burney area in 1969. She lived in Greenville, as well, and moved to Cottonwood from Burney in 1991. She was a graduate of University of Nevada in Reno. She was a teacher at Fall River and Burney High Schools. She was a member of West Valley Fire Department Auxiliary, the Redding Gun Club, the National Association of Press Photographers, the Pacific Crest Trail Association, was a 4-H leader in Greenville and the California State Horseman's Association. She had written articles for the Record Searchlight and the Sacramento Bee. Karen is survived by her daughters, Diane Isbell of Livermore, Valerie Isbell of Derwood, Md., and Lila Isbell of Columbus, Ohio. Services will be held on Friday, July 25, 2003, at 7 p.m., at the West Valley High School Cafe Building No. 200 in Cottonwood. Contributions in her memory can be made to the West Valley Fire Department Auxiliary, 19752 Gaspoint Rd., Cottonwood, CA 96022.
Loyd Wilson "Bug" Hurd, 87, formerly of Portola and most recently Twin Falls, Idaho, died July 11, 2003, at the Bishop Care Center in Bishop. Loyd was born in Kimberley, Idaho, on Oct. 10, 1915, to Elmer and Netty Pearl Hurd. He grew up in Filer, Idaho, and graduated from Filer Rural High School in 1933. He was a veteran of World War II and served in a railroad munitions battalion in Alaska. After the war, he worked as a brakeman and conductor for the Western Pacific Railroad for 32 years. Loyd played the organ and was an avid bowler. Loyd is survived by his son, Bob of Bishop; and two grandsons. A private graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Wednesday, July 16, 2003. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Loyd's memory to the Bishop Care Center, 151 Pioneer Lane, Bishop, CA 93514.
Adda Mae Rice, 76, of Portola, died July 12, 2003, at Eastern Plumas District Hospital. Adda was born May 5, 1927, in Caddo, Okla., to William Clay Sarrels and Ella Mae Combs Sarrels. She had been a resident of Portola since moving there in 1997. Prior to that, she had lived in Silver Springs, Nev., from 1992-97. She also lived in Manteca for many years, where she worked as a food grader for Eckerts Cold Storage. She was a member of the Portola Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her brother, W.C. Sarrets, Jr. and her sisters, Juanita Wallace and Elsie Hale. Adda is survived by her sons, Tommy Rice of Reno, Nev., Dennis Rice Nev. and Delbert of Silver Springs Nev.; her daughter, Shirley Laird of Portola; her sister, Martha McNeely of Yearington, Nev.; her brothers, Harold and Billy of River Bank; and six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held today, July 16, 2003, at 5-8 p.m., and on Thursday, July 17, 2003, from 9-9:30 a.m., at Manni Funeral Home in Portola. Graveside services will follow at 10 a.m., on Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Whispering Pines Cemetery
in Portola.
Thomas Patrick McCarthy died unexpectedly on July 10, 2003. Tom originally came from Pennsylvania. He was employed as a locomotive engineer for the Sacramento Northern, Western Pacific and Union Pacific railroads for 36 years. He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Graeagle Meadows Men's Club for many years. He enjoyed living in the mountains, gathering firewood, finding Christmas trees for those in need, working around his home and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert P. McCarthy. Tom is survived by his wife of 23 years, Cheri; his daughter, Shana McCarthy of Cromberg; his mother, LaRue McCarthy of Quincy; his brother, John McCarthy of Grand Junction, Colo.; his sister, Linda Jones of Pleasanton; two nieces; and two nephews. Esther Dorine Brown Leonesio died at home on June 30, 2003, after suffering from Alzheimers. Esther was born Feb. 7, 1911, and was a native of Greenville. She attended Sacramento Beauty College and later worked at Bordens Creamery behind the counter and at Knotts Pharmacy lunch counter during the 1940s and '50s. She was an avid gardener, active in the Sacramento Gladious, Iris and Rose Societies, as well as a member of the Sacramento Garden Club. She was a long-time member of the Central United Methodist Church. Esther is survived by her husband of 16 years, Cleveland Leonesio of Grass Valley; son, Marvin; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held at East Lawn Cemetery
in Sacramento, on July 11, 2003, followed by a memorial service at Central United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be sent to Central United Methodist Church, 5265 H Street, Sacramento, CA 95819.
Myron John Nelson, 90, died at his home on July 2, 2003. Myron was a native of San Jose, born on July 19, 1912, to John and Dora Henrietta Nelson. He was raised in San Jose, attended San Jose State College and went on to graaduate in 1934 at UC-Berkeley with a degree in forestry. He was employeed for three years in Missouri on the Clark National Forest and then continued his career in California for 31 more years on the Trinity and Plumas national forests. He retired in 1967, after a 34-year career with the United States Forest Service. He was a member of the Quincy Community United Methodist Church for 47 years and served on the board of trustees and other committees. He also served as a Plumas County Museum board member for 25 years. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters for 67 years and a former member of the Toastmaster's Club of Weaverville. He was known as "Grumpy" and enjoyed Thursday luncheons as a member of the Quincy Lion's Club for many years and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Dedicated Humanitarian Services Award in 1993, at the age of 80. He loved the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; two brothers; and one sister. Myron is survived by his three children, Kathryn Mitchell of Quincy, Robert Nelson of Auburn and Carolyn Welty of Woodland; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of Myron's life will take place at the Quincy Community United Methodist Church on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at 1 p.m.
