Stanley Hart, 78, died on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center. He was born in Covelo, Calif. on Jan. 17, 1925 and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 35 years. Prior to moving to Lassen County he lived in Covelo. Hart enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and was an avid chukar hunter. He loved to spend time with his family and friends and to just talk to people about anything. Stanley spent over 40 years with the logging industry and because of that he loved to spend time outdoors, exploring, which gave him the chance to be a great storyteller. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army and after his discharge still liked being around vets and volunteered his services to the VA. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; sons, Ross of Eugene, Ore. and Dean of Susanville; daughters, Susie Paulson of Susanville and Donna Hart of Alturas; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services with a viewing at Walton's, then gravesides services were held at Diamond Crest Cemetery
on Thursday, Aug. 14. There was a celebration of life following the graveside services.
Ivan Givens, 83, died on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. He was born in Milton Freewater, Ore. on Dec. 12, 1919 and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 56 years. Prior to living in Lassen County he was a resident of Portland, Ore. He was married to his devoted and loving wife Dorothy for 63 years. He was a caring, loving husband and father. He was instrumental in helping to bring auto racing to Susanville and was a member of the association for many years. He owned and operated Susanville Auto Wreckers for 35 years before his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Northern California Auto Dismantlers Association and a past president. Givens supported youth activities in Susanville for many years. He was an avid bass fisherman and enjoyed hunting. He and his wife enjoyed viewing the local wildlife in recent years. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons, Tom of Susanville, Gail of Battle Mountain, Nev. and Randall of Susanville; daughter, Linda Curtis of Kuna, Idaho; brother, Homer of Walla Walla, Wash.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Services were held on Thursday, Aug. 14, commencing with a viewing at Walton's Colonial Mortuary, which was followed by graveside services at Diamond Crest Cemetery
in Johnstonville.
Anna Mae Drake, 84, died on Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at her residence in Herlong. She was born in Troy, N.Y. on May 15, 1919 and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 45 years. Before moving to Lassen County she lived in Troy, her birthplace. She was very devoted to her faith as a Catholic and spent many hours helping those around here. She loved to spend time outdoors with those she became friends with and always had an open door for anyone who came to her home. She is survived by a brother, James O'Connell of Troy; one nephew, one niece and one grandson. Viewing will be from 4-7 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m., today, Tuesday, Aug. 19 at the Herlong Chapel, with Mass at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20. Burial will follow at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Forest Paul Smith, 60, died at his residence in Pleasant Grove, Utah, on Thursday, July 31, 2003. He was born in Susanville on July 24, 1943 and attended local schools, graduating from Lassen Union High School with the class of 1961. He served in the U.S. Army with the 5th Special Forces during the Vietnam War. He worked in the grocery business, working for Safeway in Susanville, Quincy and Red Bluff. He also worked for Hills Red and White Market in Susanville. He owned and operated a distributorship for many years. For the last several years he had worked in the construction business with Stoneco and Millers Custom Works and was currently working for Fugal Construction in Utah. Smith and his family moved to Pleasant Grove in 1997. He was preceded in death by his father last month. He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Paula and Kara and son, Brad, all of Pleasant Grove; daughter, Shari Reiniger of Calgary; mother, Elaine Smith; sister, Patricia Moore and brother Tom Smith of Susanville; five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9., with inurnment to follow in the Diamond Crest Cemetery
in Johnstonville.
Floyd C. "Buddy" Wiles, 74, a former resident of Lassen County, died in Roseville on Saturday, July 26. He was a loyal and dedicated firefighter of 43 years at the Sierra Ordinance Depot, Mather Air Force Base, McClellan Air Force Base and Aerojet General Corp. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jacquelyn "Jammy;" daughter, Roberta Wiles of Folsom, Calif.; son, Marc Wiles of Northern California; brother, Max H. Wiles of Susanville and sister, June Sinerius of Herlong. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael G. Wiles, who died in 1987 and three sisters and two brothers. Floyd leaves behind a multitude of loving nieces and nephews along with many beloved and special friends and neighbors. He was a native of Salem, Ore. A memorial service was held at Christ Community Church in Carmichael. Remembrances may be made to Christ Community Senior High Youth, the Firefighter's Association of Sacramento County and/or "Above and Beyond" youth for Christ. "I have fought the good fight, I finished the race, I kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7-8.
Barbara McQueary, 66, of Indio, Calif. died on July 12, 2003. She was born on Jan. 6, 1937 to Charles and Ida Lau Welsch of Missouri. She married Frank McQueary in 1976 in Indio. She was a homemaker. She and her husband, spent several springs and summers at their home in Lake Forest Estates near Susanville. She made many friends over that period of time, some casual, others dear, lasting friends. She loved playing cards and actively participated in weekly get-togethers. She also loved going to the casinos, making trips to Reno and having great fun with friends. She enjoyed life and lived each day to its fullest. All her friends here will truly miss her. She is survived by her husband, Frank of Indio; sons, Shawn Barlett of Cathedral City and Dan Bartlett of Thousand Palms; sisters, Jean Wardein of Redding, Pat Rounds of Placentia, Marge Roehm of Peoria, Ill. and Jackie Sutterer of Brentwood, Mich.; brothers, Chuck Welsch of Westerngrove, Mich., Jim Welsch of Brentwood and Dan Welsch of Florissant, Mich. Memorial mass was held noon on Aug. 2 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Indio. Fitzhenry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Theresa Merglouski Gegogeine, 89, died on April 19, 2003 at Lassen Community Hospital. She was born on Feb. 15, 1914 and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 39 years. She had worked as a retail clerk for Leslie's Jewelry for 18 years, retiring in 1982. She enjoyed her children and family as often as she could, spending many hours with them. She is survived by her daughters, Carol Roberson of Madera and Jerry Ann Mambourg of Sparks, son, George Gegogeine of Sacramento, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and sister, Mary Krauss in Pennsylvania. Graveside services were held on Tuesday, April 22, at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Elizabeth Stewart Alley, age 84, died with her daughter at her side Saturday morning, April 12, 2003, at Plumas District Hospital located in Quincy, CA. Born February 21, 1919, in Colorado Springs, Colo., she went on to become a 1942 graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Elizabeth had worked in the legal profession for over forty years as a legal secretary, She was a resident of Quincy for the past fifteen years, moving there from Mt. View. In Quincy, Elizabeth was a member of Christ the King Episcopal Church of Quincy, and served as a leader with the local diabetes support group, along with being active with the literacy program through the Plumas County Library. Elizabeth was an avid gardener whose immaculate yard was a testament to her hard work. Elizabeth is survived by her children, Edie O'Connor of Toll Gate, Clint and Austin Alley both of Eureka and six grandchildren. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother Robert. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, a celebration of Elizabeth's life will take place 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2003, at Christ the King Episcopal Church on Lawrence Street in Quincy. Gary Alan Colvin, 53, died April 23, 2003, while working at Collins Pine Company in Chester. Gary was born Aug. 28, 1949, to Allen and Olivia Toste Colvin in Carmel. He was raised in Salinas and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Salinas. He attended Hartnell Junior College and later, CSU-Sacramento. He moved to Chester 10 months ago to work for the Collins Company as a maintenance supervisor. Prior to that he had lived in Scappoos, Ore., for 10 years. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had a love for ranching and farming, as well as raising animals. He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the National Rifle Association. Gary is survived by his wife, Louise of Chester; son, Mike J. Colvin of Portland, Ore.; parents, Allen and Olivia Colvin of Redmond, Ore.; brothers Greg M. Colvin of Prineville, Ore., and Mark E. Colvin of Redmond, Ore.; and three grandchildren. A Catholic Blessing service was held April 26, 2003, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Chester. A celebration of life will be held at the Redmond Community Church located at 237 N. W. Ninth Street in Redmond, Ore., on Friday, May 2, 2003, at 2 p.m. Private disposition of his cremains will take place in Redmond, Ore. Alta Mae Camp, 87, died at her home in Reno, Nev., on April 18, 2003. She was born in Sacramento on June 24, 1915, to Nathaniel and Leota Mullen. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Indian Valley near Greenville, where her mother's family resided since the late 1800s. She spent most of her life on her grandfather's ranch in Indian Valley. In 1933, she graduated from Greenville High School and married Walter Camp. Alta lived in Indian Valley for 81 years. During that time, she was a member of the Rebekahs, the Garden Club, AARP and the Card Club. In recent years she had been living with her daughter in Reno, Nev. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter. Alta is survived by her daughter, Joyce Destefanis of Reno, Nev.; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons. Graveside services will be held at the Greenville Cemetery
on Saturday, April 26, 2003, at 1 p.m. A celebration of life will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Alta's memory be made to Circle of Life Hospice, 1575 Delucchi Lane, Suite 214, Reno, Nev., 89502.
Paul J. Marian, 82, died April 12, 2003, at his home in Quincy. Paul was born in St. Paul, Minn. He purchased property in Plumas County prior to World War II and moved to Quincy with his wife after serving in the United States Marine Corps. Work provided him a sense of satisfaction. He was known to care for the needs of others before his own. Paul is survived by his wife of 49 years, Josephine Hiroko Marian of Quincy; his children, Teresa Marian Roger-Vasselin of Reno, Nev., John Marian of Palos Verdes Estates; his sister, Martha Kelly of Seattle, Wash.; two grandsons; six nephews and seven nieces. In accordance with Paul's wishes, there will be a small family service following cremation.
