James Ducasse, 75, died on Sunday, April 13, 2003, in Santa Cruz, Calif. after a year long battle with lung cancer. He was born in Susanville on Oct. 30, 1927, where he grew up attending local schools. He graduated from UC Berkeley and went on to Georgetown University Dental School, graduating in 1957. He was a resident of Watsonville for 45 years, where he established his dental practice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Beth Ducasee and his son, James Ducase II. He is survived by his daughter, Lynne Howard and her husband, Roy Howard of Capitola and six grandsons, Greg and Jake Brazil and James III, John, Scott and Brian Ducasse. His family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. His ashes will be scattered in the sea near his home at Sand Dollar Beach. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Lassen High School Alumni Association or to a charity of your choice.
Charlotte Weston Martinez, 69, passed away on April 21, 2003 at Enloe Hospital in Chico. Charlotte was born in Bellingham, Wash.
She is preceded in death by her son, Mark Martinez. Charlotte is survived by her son, John Martinez of Chico; daughters, Cindy Marks of Quincy and Cheryl Martinez of Chico; brother, Lyle Weston of Oregon; sisters, Barbara of Washington, and Lois of Illinois; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Neil Hampton Goldsmith, 86, died at his home in St. George, Utah on May 1, 2003. Neil was born October 2, 1916, at Holidays Cove, W.Va. He had previously resided at Lake Almanor before retiring to St. George five years ago. Neil was a career Navy man, retiring after 30 years of loyal service to his country. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing in the numerous lakes and streams throughout Plumas County. Neil is survived by his wife , Lillian Louise; son and daughter C.J. and Lara Goldsmith of Lake Almanor; daughters Elynda Mehls, Cynthia Fields and Lisa Goldsmith, all of Santa Rosa; Sandra Henderson of Las Vegas, Nev.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service to be held at Lake Almanor will be announced at a later date.
Donald Lewis "Moose" Luthringer Jr., 50, died from injuries incurred in a motor vehicle accident Saturday afternoon outside of Taylorsville. His son, Jason Samuel Luthringer, also died in the accident. Born July 20, 1952, to Donald and Sunny Sisk Luthringer in Sacramento, his size quickly lent to him affectionately being nick-named "Moose." Don was raised and spent his life in the Sacramento area until moving to Indian Valley in 1994 from Sacramento. He was currently employed as a warehouse manager for Sierra Select Distributors in Sacramento. "Moose" had a passion for off road motorcycle racing and served as a crew member and mechanic for a number of race teams. He was a longtime member of the America Motorcycle Association. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and the serenity of the area. Don is survived by his wife Karen of Taylorsville; parents, Donald Sr., and Sunny Luthringer of Sacramento; sisters, Janice Villarreal of Canal Winchester, Ohio, and Elizabeth and Margaret Luthringer, both of Sacramento. Visitation will be held Friday, May 2, 2003, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Greenville from 5-7 p.m. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. ,Saturday, May 3, with family member Monsignor James Church the celebrant. Jason Samuel Luthringer, 23, died Saturday evening, April 26, 2003, at Indian Valley District Hospital from injuries incurred in a motor vehicle accident outside of Taylorsville. His father, Donald L. "Moose" Luthringer, died in the accident also. Born July 30, 1979, to Donald "Moose" and Karen Cooper Luthringer in Sacramento, he moved with his parents to Indian Valley in 1994. Jason was currently employed as a sales manager of Furniture Warehouse located in Ukiah. Jason was a 1997 graduate of Greenville High School where he competed in both basketball and baseball and went on to attend college at both Feather River College and Butte College. He was an accomplished drummer. Jason had developed a great affection for the outdoors, especially fishing and was respected in the area for his fly-tying abilities. Jason is survived by his mother, Karen, of Taylorsville; grandparents Donald Sr., and Sunny Luthringer of Sacramento, and Edwin and Christine Cooper of Watsonville; cousins whom he considered his siblings Molly and Eric Church, Noah Craney, Eddie and Spencer Cooper. Paul Morgan,91, died at his home Friday, May 2, 2003. Paul was born in Westminster to Grace Swayze and Avearl Morgan on Aug. 28, 1911. He graduated from Garden Grove High School and UC-Davis. He worked as a milk inspector for the state of California for 25 years. In 1949 he married Dorothy Carrico of Orland. They lived and farmed in Yuba City, and retiring to Lake Almanor until moving to Chico in 1998. He loved farming, golf and traveling.
Paul is survived one son, Robert.
There will be no service and his cremains will be buried at the Graves Cemetery
in Orland. Arrangements are being handled by Bidwell Chapel.
William "Bill" Winchester Valentine, Jr., 71, of Plumas Pines in Blairsden, died at his residence on the Feather River on April 29, 2003. Bill was born May 2, 1931, to William Winchester Valentine, Sr. and Serita Miller. He was raised in Pasadena by his father and stepmother, Mary Stringfellow Valentine. He attended Polytechnic Elementary School in Pasadena and the Cate School in Carpinteria. He was an All League second baseman and recorded the batting championship while at Cate. During several summers as a teenager he worked at Folly Ranch in Big Horn, Wyo. He entered Stanford University in the fall of 1949, leaving to join the Air Force in 1951. He became a survival instructor at Stead. He was active in Germany and helped establish a survival school at Bad Tolz in the German Alps. Following his honorable discharge in 1954, he re-entered Stanford University. In 1955, he married Jean Alayne Scholl in Monterey. He earned his economics degree from Stanford in 1956. Upon graduating, he purchased the Hole-In-The-Ground Ranch in Siskiyou County. He served as president of the Siskiyou County Cattlemen's Association in 1962 and 1963. During the 1970s he owned and operated Siskiyou Tractor in Yreka. In 1971, Bill married Jane. In 1980 Bill purchased an interest in Knox Real Estate in Portola, at which point his wife, Jane, and he moved to Plumas County. Within years Bill and Jane formed Plumas Pines Realty and worked together, selling and leasing real estate in Plumas Pines for more than 20 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing and waterfowl hunting. His favorite project over the last couple of years had been designing and building his and Jane's dream house on a wooded lot overlooking a bend in the Feather River. Bill is survived by his wife, Jane; sons, Earl, Michael, Richard, William and Brett; his daughter, Jennifer; and his brother, Peter. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sally and Susan. Donald Lee Vache, 61, died on Saturday, April 5, 2003. He was born in Susanville on March 16, 1942 and was a resident of Lassen County his entire life. He was a self-employed truck driver for 43 years; owning first, Don Vache trucking, then being a co-owner of M.V.M. Trucking. He was an avid follower of NASCAR (his favorite driver was Bill Elliott) and the World of Outlaw sprint car racing. His love for cars went beyond racing; he and his wife Ruthie had just purchased a 1930 Ford Coupe. He also enjoyed football and basketball, his favorite teams being the Cowboys and Kings. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and was a former member of the B.P.O.E. He is survived by his wife, Ruthie of Susanville; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Jennifer Uruburu of Susanville; daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Dana Whipple of Susanville and daughter Jeanine Uruburu of Susanville and her boyfriend, Jerry Acker. He is also survived by grandchildren, Dustin Uruburu, Ashley Kessler, Ember Uruburu, Cora Uruburu, Cassidy Whipple, Tatum Uruburu and Trinity Whipple. Memorial services will be held at the Gospel Tabernacle Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. The family requests any donations be made in his memory to either the California Burn Foundation or the T.M.J. Foundation.
Gary Patterson, 60, died on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at his residence in Janesville. He was born in Pasadena on May 10, 1942, coming from Fresno County and had been a resident of Janesville for the past 15 years. He had worked for the California Department of Forestry for 30 years, retiring 10 years ago, working as a firefighter. He had also been a member of Rotary Club and the B.P.O.E. His main enjoyment was his photography studio, Honey Lake Photography. He is survived by his friend, Bobbi Hufferd of Janesville; sister, Judy Harmon of Medford, Ore. and nephew, Michael Price. Memorial services will be held at the Veteran's Memorial Building in Susanville at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 18. The family requests that any donations be made in his memory to the V.A. Hospital in Reno.
Fred Rudolph Frick, 83, died on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. He was born on Aug. 16, 1919 and was a resident of Lassen County for the past 65 years. He had owned his own business as a credit associate here in Susanville for many years. He was a current member of the American Legion, enjoyed bowling, Rush Limbaugh and he was proud to be a Republican. He is survived by his sister-in-law Linnie Poor of Reno, brother-in-law's Jack Wilder, Kenneth Wilder of Susanville and Jessie Wilder of Dayton, Ohio and many nieces and nephews. There was a visitation on Saturday, April 12 at Walton's Chapel. Chapel services followed at Walton's Burial followed at Diamond Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are being asked to be made to your charity of choice in his name.
Pamela Sue Severance, 54, died on Sunday, April 6, 2003, after a 2-1/2 year battle with ALS. She was born on June 2, 1948 to John Edwards and Mary Bradford in Oroville, Calif. She attended Lassen High School and Lassen College. She and her husband, Bob, made their home in Glendale, Ariz., where she worked as a certified herbitoligist and vitamintician. She enjoyed traveling, music and watching her brothers play guitars. Her favorite hobbies were arts and crafts and making dolls out of household items. She was preceded in death by her father, John Edwards; mother, Mary Conrod; sister, Anita Flowers; brother, Phillip Flowers and niece, Heather Flowers. She is survived by husband, Bob Severance of Glendale, Ariz.; sons, Tommy Wartensleben of Montana, David Wartensleben of Wyoming, brother and sister-in-law Bob and Dottie Edwards of Janesville; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Jenny Flowers of Herlong; brother, Eddie Flowers of Sparks, one granddaughter and numerous nieces, nephews and good friends. A celebration of life was held at the Best Funeral Mortuary in Peoria, Ariz. on April 9 and burial at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery
in Phoenix, Ariz. on April 10. The family requests any donations be made to the ALS foundation.
