Leah Faye Hudson died Nov. 1. 2003.
Leah was born Dec. 16. 1902, in Oklahoma, the seventh child of the Moore family. After growing up on their farm, she graduated from Southwestern University in Winfield, Kan., and worked as a dietician for hospitals in Kansas and Colorado. Leah was married to her first husband, Harold Bressler for 35 years. They lived in Kansas, Colorado and Oregon. Harold died in 1962. In 1973 she moved to Susanville to marry Ivan Hudson. They had many camping, hiking and rock collecting trips. She was a wife and caregiver until Ivan's death in 1983. Leah was a member of the Monticola club, Susanville Untied Methodist Church and Lassen Gem and Mineral Society. She also was an avid gardener and won many blue ribbons for her floral displays at the Lassen County Fair. Leah is survived by her four stepchildren, Dorothy Wright of Palm Harbor, Fla., Ernest Hudson of Sacramento, Lawrence Hudson of Belen, N.M. and Richard Hudson of Prescott, Ariz. Services for Leah will be at Walton's Colonial Mortuary tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003 at 10 a.m. Private burial will be at Diamond Crest Cemetery
in Johnstonville. In lieu of flowers Leah's many friends may donate to a charity of their choice.
Arnold Josef "Arnie" Hasselwander, 70, died Oct. 31, 2003, with his wife at his side at Seneca District Hospital in Chester. The second of five children, "Arnie" was born April 6, 1933, in Detroit, Mich., to German immigrants Joseph and Clara (Derstaedt) Hasselwander. "Arnie" was educated in the Roman Catholic parochial school system and graduated from DeLamo High School in Los Angeles in 1951. He entered the major seminary and attended Loyola University of Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Philosophy in 1957. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1961, serving in several assignments. During his assignment in Washington, D. C., he completed a masters degree in biological sciences in 1962. His next assignment was in Terre Haute, Ind. While there, he earned a second masters degree in education in 1966. In 1967, he was assigned to Hofstra University in New York, as the Newman Chaplain. He also taught at the Diocesan high school, St. Agnes, in Rockville Center. Although he left the priesthood, Arnie's passion was to serve. He moved to Westwood in 1968 to join the faculty of Westwood High School as their science teacher and junior varsity football coach for five seasons. Working with Lassen College, he served as coordinator and helped initiate the Extended Day Outreach program helping returning soldiers from the Vietnam War continue their education. Arnie retired from the Westwood Unified School District in 1990. Arnie was a 28 year member of the Westwood Community Services District. Arnie was instrumental in the construction of the Westwood Park and for his hard work and dedication to the project was affectionally nicknamed Mr. Park. Arnie became actively involved with the Westwood Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1996 and was currently serving as their secretary/treasurer. He was currently serving as the President of the Plumas-Lassen Chapter of the California Retired Teachers Association and was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood. Arnie was honored as the Grand Marshall of the Paul Bunyan Days Parade this past July. He was an avid sports fan who had a passion for Notre Dame Football and the San Francisco 49er's. He loved to practice recycling while also enjoying tending to his garden, smoking a good cigar and spending time in the woods collecting firewood and later in life serving as "House Husband." Arnie is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary; sons, Joseph Joe Hasselwander of Livermore, Thomas Tom Hasselwander of Burbank, daughters, Jennifer Jenny Alton of Windsor, Anna Marie Macintire of Livermore, Gina Hasselwander of Westwood; brothers, Joe of Clinton Township, Mich.; and Ted of Detroit, Mich.; sisters, Anita Kargilis of Sterling Heights, Mich., and Mary Blasius of Warren, Mich.; and five grandchildren. A Catholic Vigil service to include the recitation of the Holy Rosary will take place at 7 p.m., tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for the repose of his soul tomorrow at 10 a.m., Thursday Nov. 6, 2003 at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood. Edwin Anthony Abbott, 87, died on Oct. 26, 2003, at Banner Lassen Medical Center located in Susanville. Born to Detroit, Mich. natives Dudley "John" and Amanda McEvoy Abbott in Detroit, Michigan he moved to the West Coast in 1943 to settle in Lomita, Calif. He went on to honorably serve his county as a U.S. Army medic during World War II. Ed had retired from the Petroleum Refinery Industry after some thirty-four loyal and dedicated years of service to the Atlantic Richfield Company. Following his retirement he moved to Clear Creek, Calif. in 1976. He was a devout member of the Roman Catholic faith and as a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood where he served his congregation as a eucharist minister and reader while also being involved with the former Men's Club. He was a longtime member of the St. Gerard Council #4919 of the Knights of Columbus located in Torrance, Calif. He enjoyed traveling, spending time in the outdoors hunting and trying to locate precious stones to keep his interest in the art of lapidary going. He could also be found regularly studying the stock market. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Violet in August 1983, daughter Janice Carol Abbott in 1941, brother William and sister Mary Curtis. He is survived by his loving and caring family to include his children John Anthony Abbott of Issaquah, Wash., Laurelie Nan Abbott-Larkins of Reno and William Anthony Abbott of Lomita, Calif. along with the joys of his later life his four grandchildren. A visitation was held Wednesday evening Oct. 29 at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for the repose of his soul 10 a.m., on Thursday Oct. 30 at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood followed by interment next to his late wife in the Westwood Cemetery. Nelmer Philip Spalding, 66, died on Oct. 24, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. He was born in Hat Creek on Jan. 27, 1937 and was a resident of Lassen County for the past 65 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Susanvijlle and belonged to the Elks Lodge #1487 for 41 years. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict in the U.S. Army. He had 16 years of education, obtaining two bachelor degrees, one in public speaking and one in criminal justice. He worked for the Department of Defense for 28-1/2 years and retired from Sierra Army Depot as an ammo inspector. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and dancing. He is survived by his daughter, Tonnie and husband, Marty Abernathy of Susanville; brother, William and wife, Marilyn Spalding of Oroville; sister, Ruth and husband, Edgar Owre of Carmichael, Calif. and two grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8 at Walton's Colonial Chapel with burial to follow at Lassen Cemetery. A reception will follow the services at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Jacquelyn Munn Turley, 52, died Oct. 25, 2003, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Born Jan. 18, 1951, in Sacramento, she attended school in West Sacramento and graduated from James Marshall High School in 1969. She went on to receive a degree in fine arts. She worked as a graphic artist in New York, Oakland and Los Angeles. She received her teaching credential in 1987. After working for many years in both public and non-public schools, She chose to specialize in working with students with behavior problems. Her hard work, interest in learning, and positive attitude made her an inspiration to her students. She is survived by her daughter, Kendra Drischler, who recently graduated from UC Berkeley; mother, Kay Munn; brother, Charles Munn of Elk Grove; sister Rebecca May of Susanville and her brother Robert Munn of Foster City. She also leaves behind her fianc and best friend John Rasmussen. All remembrances should be sent to the Breast Cancer Early Detection Program.
Thelma Mae Harvath, 79, died March 5, 2003, in Chico. Thelma was born June 23, 1923. She had been a resident of Chester for 51 years. She was a dietary supervisor at Seneca Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Susan James; and her son, Michael James. Thelma is survived by her husband, George Harvath; her daughters, Patricia Cress and Donna Billings; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral and memorial services will be announced. The family requests no flowers.
Ronald Edward Saari, 59, of East Quincy died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Enloe Hospital in Chico. Ronald was born to George and Oleta Saari of East Quincy on July 31, 1943. A lifelong resident of Plumas County who worked in the lumber, construction and ranching industries, he enjoyed all facets of life in this area and was a wealth of information on the history of the region. He especially loved gardening, husbandry, trapping and his granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his parents, George E. Saari and Oleta F. Saari and his wife, Prudence (Betsy) Saari. He is survived by his daughter, Oleta Saari of Quincy; one granddaughter; brother George Saari of Quincy; sisters Delores Parsons of Quincy, Gloria Wilken of Quincy, Doris Saari of Upper Lake and Jane Walters of Quincy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, March 22, at noon in the East Quincy Cemetery, followed by a gathering of friends and loved ones at the Saari residence at 193 S. Mill Creek Road in East Quincy. The Saari family asks that any donations be made in Ronald Saari's name to the American Diabetes Association (www. diabetes. org).
Curtis Edward Nichols, 62, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation following a courageous battle with cancer. Born June 11, 1940, to Ernest and Irene Roseberry Nichols in Clinton, Mass., he spent most of his life residing in that area. Curtis is a graduate of Clinton High School and worked as a self-employed painting contractor. He had been a resident of Plumas County for the past 10 years, residing in Delleker from 1992 to September of 1999, when he moved to his current residence outside of Quincy. Curtis was an accomplished woodworker who loved constructing toys for his family and grandchildren. He had been a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was the youngest of seven children and is preceded in death by both of his parents. Curtis gained great pleasure in spending time with his family and will be greatly missed by all. Curtis is survived by his wife, Kathleen, whom he married Sept. 4, 1999; son Joseph Edward Pearce of Cold Springs, Nev.; daughters Helena Reddecop of Graeagle, Christine Walker of Clearfield, Utah; Darlene Ramirez of Loyalton; and nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. Following cremation a private family celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Robert James Gilkinson, 79, of Oakhurst, died Feb. 12, 2003. Bob was born Jan. 11, 1924, to Samuel and Golden Gilkinson in Glendale, where he was raised. He graduated from Glendale Hoover High School in 1942. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman. He attended UC-Los Angeles, graduating with a degree in business education in 1950. He went on to obtain his master's in 1962. He began his teaching career in Trona and ended it in China Lake/Ridgecrest. Following retirement, he was a substitute teacher in Madera County. In 1975, he switched from business education to physical education. He coached boys and girls tennis for 25 years. He was active in various tennis programs through United States Tennis Association in the Oakhurst area, arranging tennis lessons for elementary children in Madera. During the summer, he volunteered as the recreation chairman for Sierra Tennis Club. He was a dedicated blood donor, and helped coordinate blood drives, spoke to community groups on that topic, appeared in service presentations and also wrote monthly news releases. Besides giving more than 12 gallons of blood, he was also an Apheresis donor, completing 317 sessions. In 1991, he was honored as a Volunteer of the Year finalist by the Central California Blood Bank. Many knew him as the "Candy Man" handing out Tootsie Rolls. He enjoyed the outdoors hiking, camping, boondocking and picnicking. Robert is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kay of Oakhurst; his children, Randy Gilkinson of Clinton, Wash., Janet Weidman of Astoria, Ore., Kevin Gilkinson of Madera and Nancy Randall of Virginia Beach, Va.; his brother, Ray McDonnel of Blairsden; and 12 grandchildren.
