Evelyn Eliza (Amator) Bantley, 84, died on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, in Anderson, Calif. She was born on Sept. 28, 1918 in Phoenix, Ariz., to Floyd and Cora Amator. She grew up in Durham and raised her family there. A homemaker, she moved to Susanville in 1957 and she was a volunteered for the Salvation Army. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Bantley. She is survived by daughters, Geraldine Becker of Hebo, Ore. and Laura Smith of Anderson and 16 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Redding through Brusie Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements.
Kenneth "Dwight" John Sullivan, 63, passed away at his residence on March 17, 2003. He was born June 24, 1939, to William and Mary Agnes Sullivan-Hoes in Richmond. He was raised in the San Francisco east Bay Area. Dwight had been a Quincy resident for the past 13 years, moving from Reno, Nev. Dwight had been a self-employed hairstylist for the past 25 years, while also sharing his expertise in the field with students at Chico State where he had been a faculty member for a number of years. He was a Chevrolet Corvette aficionado, who's greatest pasttime was restoring the model. He enjoyed expressing his creativity through crafts especially making wooden yard ornaments. Dwight also liked to take time to enjoy the outdoors through fishing. Dwight is survived by his daughters, Michelle Harris of Corning, Kendra and Bridget Crenshaw, both of Vallejo; his fiancee, Suzanne Benton of Twain; sisters, Kathy Martineau of Reno, Nev., Barbara Jacobus of Michigan and Marilyn Webster of Pine Grove; and two grandsons. Following cremation, an Irish Wake along with a display of Dwight's crafts will take place at the Plumas Club located on Quincy's Main Street Saturday evening on April 5, 2003. Robert "Bob" Echols, 74, died in Portola on March 16, 2003. Bob was born March 9, 1929, in Fullerton. He retired from Sierra Airgas and had lived in Graeagle for the last 11 years. Bob is survived by his wife of 53 years, "Hank"; daughter, Sheri Nikkels; and his granddaughter. Services were held at East Lawn Mortuary in Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cancer Research Foundation.
Carol Eveland Kingdon died March 18, 2003, after a 30-month battle with cancer. She was born on July 12, 1938, in Red Bluff, then spent most of her life in Indian Valley-in Engle mine as a child on the North Arm. For 34 years she was the postmaster in Taylorsville,retiring on Dec. 14, 2001, because of illness. She was very active in the community as a member of the Children's Home Society and Study Club, contributor to the Indian Valley Museum and a director of the Taylorsville Cemetery. She spent a good part of her free time helping to make the community more beautiful. With her husband of 47 years, Loren, she planted 24,000 daffodils over the past 10 years in and around Taylorsville and North Arm. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alan Eveland and Susan Downey. Carol is survived by her husband, Loren; her two sons, Reed of Camino and Mark of San Francisco and New York. Carol will be affectionately missed by her family and many friends. She will be remembered for her devotion to the town of Taylorsville. And, she will be remembered fondlly every March when her daffodils bloom. At Carol's request, no memorial service will be held. Della Opal Sparks, 87, died March 21, 2003, at the Long Term Care Facility of Indian Valley Health Care District, her residence for the past 10 years. Born October 19, 1915 to Minnesota natives, Clarence and Luella Lawrence Bliler, in Clyde Park, Mont. She had been a Plumas County resident for the past 32 years, residing in both Quincy and Greenville. She moved to the area from Manteca. Della devoted her life to caring for her family and gained great pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert and one great-grandson. Della is survived by her children, Robert Pettit of Quincy, Lynette Wirth of Reno, Nev.; stepsons, Albert Sparks of Reno, Nev., and Edward Sparks of Shady Cove, Ore.; sister, Dorothy of Helena, Mont.; four grandchildren; four great-grandsons; one great granddaughter. Following cremation a celebration of her life will take place at her son's residence in Quincy, on Saturday, March 29, 2003, at 4 p.m. Inurnment will be in the Quincy East Lawn Cemetery. Ida Cambell
Ida Cambell, 88, a former Chester resident, died on March 18, 2003, at a care facility in Oroville. Ida was born on April 18, 1914, to Lewis and Nellie Hale in Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Cambell. She is survived by her daughters, Marian Newman of Burlingame and Hazel Pastor of Orland; and one grandson. Services were held on March 21, 2003, at the Chester Cemetery.
Charles George Cook
Charles George Cook, 82, died March 22, 2003, at his home in Chester. Charlie was born March 1, 1921, to James and Mary Turney Cook in Stuart, Neb. He served as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II as a member of an anti-aircraft battery. Prior to World War II he was a member of the CCC. He had retired from the mining industry in the Boron area as a millrite after more than 45 years. In 1990, Charlie and his late wife moved from Boran to Chester. He continued to share his repair expertise helping others repair their autos and boats. Charlie was an avid fisherman. He had built his own pontoon boat and had been working on a ski barge. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Pauline. Charlie is survived by his stepson, Cecil West of Redding; stepdaughters, Maxine Flower of Chester and Frankie Ford of Redding; his sister, Marry Morrow of Belleview, Neb.; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Following cremation, a celebration of Charlie's life will take place at the graveside in the Chester District Cemetery

Diane Metz, 53, died at her residence in Susanville on Wednesday, March 12, 2003. She was born in California on Nov. 30, 1949 and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 33 years. She had previously lived in Anaheim. In addition to being a loving mother and grandmother, spending many hours with her grandchildren, she also enjoyed the learning of history, reading and crossword puzzles. Her favorite pastimes were to go to the ocean and the redwoods. Diane was preceded in death by her mother, Edith Crosby, husband, Fred Metz and brother, Dane Crosby. She is survived by her daughter, Amy Metz of Lake Forest; sons, Murph Metz of Quincy and Fred and Alan Metz of Susanville; brother, Mark Crosby of Washington; sister, Elaine Kowalski of Oregon and two grandchildren. Graveside services were held at the Diamond Crest Cemetery
on Friday, March 21.
Alice "Loretta" Colvin, 77, died suddenly with her family at her side Tuesday morning March 11, 2003 at Enloe Community Hospital located in Chico. Born April 5, 1925 to Agusta and Bertha McNeil Reihl in Sacramento, Loretta spent her youth in Napa. She met and later married Richard Colvin March 6, 1951 in Napa, where they raised their family and resided until moving to Chester 21 years ago. Colvin had worked in the retail sales field for a number of years in the North Bay area and upon moving to Chester went to work for Feather River Publishing as a proofreader for the past 21 years. She was actively involved in the Chester/Lake Almanor areas community affairs through the American Legion Auxiliary where she currently served as its president and had served as its longtime treasurer, the local area Salvation Army where again she served as treasurer, and had been a longtime member of Seneca Health Care District's Auxiliary. She was a member of the Chester Lake Almanor Snowmobile Association sharing her late husbands love of the outdoors through snowmobiling while also enjoying the art of quilting as a member of the Chester Peacemakers. She was a devoted member of Christ the King Catholic Church and will be remembered throughout the community as one always there to lend a hand in time of need. She is preceded in death by her husband of over 52 years, Richard, who died in December of 2002, along with both her parents. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Pam Bell of Visalia, Gordon "Joe" and Debbie Colvin of Susanville; daughter and son-in-law Alberta and David Dennett of Chester; sister, Ruby Castro of Vacaville; grandchildren Richie, Kim, Troy along with three great-grandchildren. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, a memorial mass will be celebrated for the repose of her soul 10 a.m., Saturday March 29, at Christ the King Catholic Church located in Chester, with interment to follow alongside her late husband in the Chester District Cemetery. Hazel Gladys Monroe, 77, died on Saturday, March 8, 2003, following a long illness. She was born on April 1, 1925 in West Bromwich, England and moved to the United States in 1946. She had been a resident of Lassen County since 1963. She was a past president of the Johnstonville Elementary School Board of Trustees and was a member of the board at the time of her passing. She served as secretary for Johnstonville Elementary School for more than 25 years. In addition, she was a founding member of the Lassen Humane Society and was treasurer of that organization since its inception. She also volunteered at the Susanville Senior Citizen Center. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, William C. "Bill" Monroe; sister, April Greaves of Totnes, England; brother, David Jones of Harare, Zimbabwe; daughters, Barbara Coleman of Augusta, Ga., Helen Carrick of Dallas, Texas, Victoria Monroe of Johnstonville, Jennifer Monroe of Bristol, England and son, William C. "Bill" Monroe of Reno, Nev. She is also survived by eight grandchildren. Memorial services, officiated by Father Thomas Relihan, were held on Monday, March 8, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Victor Robert Preston, 49, died on Saturday, March 15 at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento He was a native son of Susanville and was preceded in death by his father, Leonard and his brother, Herb. He is survived by his mother, Ramona and his step-father, Bob Evans of Susanville; Regina Sanchez of Sacramento; sister, Patricia and brother-in-law, Steve Snow of Susanville; children, Maymi, Vikki, Chelsey and Michael and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Services were held on Wednesday, March 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sacramento. A wake was held on Thursday night, March 20 at the Susanville Indian Rancheria gymnasium in Susanville for local family and friends. A service was held on Friday, March 21 at the SIR gymnasium. Burial was held at the SIR Indian Cemetery
on Paiute Lane, following services.
