Eugene Lee Roberts, 82, died Saturday, July 6, 2002 in Roseville, Calif. He was born on Nov. 21, 1919 in Arma, Kan., to Nathan Josephus and Ellison Moffat Roberts. A longtime resident of Fremont, Calif. and the Bay Area, he moved in 1999 to a retirement community in Lincoln, Calif. A World War II veteran and purple heart recipient, Roberts gallantly served in the 535 battalion and was in the first wave on Utah Beach during the D-day invasion in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944. A building and manufacturing executive and entrepreneur, he was Senior Vice President of Kaiser Aluminum in Oakland during the 1960s. In 1974, he started his own company, Commercial Alterations Services, Inc. based in Fremont. He was also a member of the international wine organization, Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marian J. Roberts; daughters, Diane Wahlert of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. and Carrie Roberts Rombach of Berkeley, Calif.; brother, Larry N. Roberts of Westwood; sisters, Shirley Belden of Anderson, Calif and Mary Skelton of Red Bluff, Calif. and grandchildren, Neil Dyer of Colorado and Brook Ruther of Nebraska. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.
Robert Kenneth Fenstermaker, 65, of Portola, died at his home on Sept. 6, 2002. He had been a resident of Portola for the past six years after he moved from Fremont. Robert had been a carpenter with Carpenter Union Local 713, in Fremont. He enjoyed fishing. Robert is survived by two sons; two daughters; one brother; four sisters; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Private family inurnment is to be held at a later date.
Donna Marie Winters, age 75, died on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at Redding Medical Center. She was born on April 26, 1927 in Milford. She was employed as a telephone operator in Milford and also worked in the administration office for Montgomery Ward in Oakland, Calif. She is survived by her husband, John Winters Sr. of Anderson, Calif., sister, Jean Rae Ranney of Marysville, Calif. and son, John Winters Jr., also of Anderson. Services were held on Friday, Aug. 23 at Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel in Anderson. She will be buried at the Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette, Calif., at a later date.
Joseph Cochell, 84, died on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Redding Medical Center. He was born on July 9, 1918, in Kansas City, Missouri. He had been a Lassen County resident since moving here from Santa Barabara, Calif., 13 years ago. In 1940, Georgia Katherine Simpson met a young man by the name of Joseph Cochell. He told Miss Simpson that he was going to marry her and she thought it was a tall tale. Miss Simpson returned to California and corresponded with Joseph for a year-and-a-half. Later, Joseph had to sell a pair of prized spurs to make his way out of California. This was done so that he could keep his promise to his wife Georgia, whom he married in 1942. Cochell loved his family and his faith as a Jehovah's Witness. Ranching to him was not only a way to provide for his family, but also his lifestyle that he cherished for seventy years. He also enjoyed going hunting occasionally. He is survived by his wife, Georgia Katherine; daughter, Katherine Bernice Wilson of Westminster, Calif.; sons, Larry Joseph Cochell of Mission Viejo, Calif. and Ricky and Wayne Cochell of Standish and sisters, Ilene Garrett of Kansas City and Juanita Hunt of Brea, Calif. He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services were held on Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Kingdom Hall in Susanville.
Wiford Bauer, 86, died on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at the Lassen Community Hospital Annex. He was born on Dec. 22, 1915 in Enterprise, Utah and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 54 years. He was the owner of the Bauer Ranch on Richmond Road and had also been employed as a tree faller by various logging outfits, including the Fruit Growers, Collins Pine and the Paul Bunyan Company. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had been a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He received both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwenna Bauer, in 1991. He is survived by his sons, Kent Bauer of Susanville and Bryce Bauer of Burney and sisters, Noriene Barnum, Arvilla James and Adriene Roberts, all of Utah. He is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held at the Diamond Crest Cemetery
in Johnstonville on Friday, Aug. 16.
Leslie Ann Higgins, 36, died on Aug. 18, 2002, at Lassen Community Hospital. She was born in Santa Cruz, Calif. on Dec. 9, 1965 and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past nine years. She is survived by her brothers, John Higgins of Carson City, Nev., Richard Smith of Santa Cruz and Ron Smith of South Dakota and sisters, Nancy Minuti of Santa Cruz, Jean Miller of Frazier Park, Calif. and Jewel DeMoss of Weaverville. Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
Katherine Lane Robinson, 94, died on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at Lassen Community Hospital. She was born in Sebastopol, Calif. on March 8, 1908 and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 84 years. She moved from Sebastopol, Calif. when she was about 10 years old. Katherine was a member of the Doyle Christian Church and was willing to help and provide service at anytime. She was the type of person who was always willing to lend a hand and to share her talents with anyone. Robinson was a natural talent in anything she chose to do, such as craft, gardening, woodworking, leather working, guitar playing and playing the organ. She was a leader and craft instructor for the 4-H Club, for over 40 years, Robinson was also a member of the Long Valley School Board for over thirty years. She was named "Old Timer of the Year" for Lassen County in 1973. Anything she did or decided to do she did very well and everyone she met benefited from her skills. She was very well-liked and enjoyed having people over to her home. She enjoyed her family and spending time with them. She is survived by her sons, Bill Robinson of Doyle and Stuart Robinson of Gerlac, Nev. She is also survived by for grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Katherine will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Doyle Senior Citizen Center. The burial will be held at a later date at the Doyle Cemetery.
Elsie Gladys Barnes, 88, died peacefully with her daughters at her side, Thursday morning Aug. 22, 2002 at Seneca District Hospital located in Chester, Calif. Born July 3, 1914 in Red Cloud, Neb., to William and Josephine Havel Kudrna, she had resided in Truckee, Calif., for more than 60 years prior to moving to Chester two years ago. Barnes had been employed at the Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee for 15 years in their housekeeping department. Barnes was the epitome of a "people person," who will be remembered for her forever positive outlook on life. She always kept her family first and considered them her number one love in life. A longtime attendee of the of the Methodist Church of the Mountains located in Truckee, she was a very active member of the Truckee Seniors where she took part in the senior nutrition program and gained great pleasure in traveling throughout California and Nevada on the Senior's Bus. She had also been a member of the Truckee Seniors Cofy Club. She was a talented seamstress who enjoyed sewing for her family. She found pleasure in working in her garden and partaking in all types of crafts projects. She is survived by her daughters, Donna Greenwald of Oroville, Calif., Ginger Stratford of Chester; sister, Wilma Chaplin of Frederick, Wis.; grandchildren Kyle Smart, Monica Colby and Summer Grounds along with two great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Harry in 1970 and brothers Ralph and Robert Kudrna. A celebration of Elsie's Life will be held at graveside next to her husband in the Truckee District Cemetery, 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug., 31. Dorothy May Blankley, 89, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at the Lassen Community Hospital Annex located in Susanville, Calif. Born Aug. 30, 1912 in San Bernardino, Calif., to Edwin and Mattie Brown Warren, she had spent most her life in the Southern California region moving to Susanville two years ago from Yucaipa, Calif. She was a great outdoors enthusiast, enjoying hunting, fishing and trap shooting. She shared her artistic abilities thru cake decorating, knitting, crocheting, and many different types of crafts. Blankley also enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends. Blankley is survived by her daughters and son-in-laws, Doris and Ron Jackson of Palm Desert, Calif., Marilyn and Bob Nighswonger of Janesville, Calif.; brother, Roland Warren of Twenty Nine Palms, Calif.; sister, Lois Arvickson of Yucaipa, Calif.; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James Hobbs Blankley, in 1985, daughter Barbara Newton, one sister and two brothers. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory, a private family celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Inurnment will take place alongside her husband in Desert Lawn Memorial Park located in Calimesa, Calif. Kay Marlene Stelzriede, 66, died Aug. 25, 2002, at Feather River Hospital in Paradise. Kay was born Oct. 18, 1935 to Glen and Mary Hardy Wurl in Mt. Auburn, Ill. She moved to Westwood in 1969. In 1978 she moved to the Peninsula of Lake Almanor, and had recently become a winter resident of Paradise. Kay was a charter member and past president of the Soroptmist Club of Lake Almanor, longtime member of the Yenta Ladies Club of Westwood along with the Daughters of the Nile Club. She had been honored by the Westwood-Lake Almanor Rotary Club with their highest honor, the Paul Harris Fellow, in 1996. She enjoyed art, interior design and community service. Kay is survived by her husband, Ben of Lake Almanor and Paradise; sons, Michael Stelzriede of Westwood, Mark Stelzriede of Milpitas and Monte Stelzriede of Lake Almanor; sister, Gloria "Jeanie" Burge of Ft. Worth, Texas; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A celebration of Kay's life will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002 at 11 a.m., at the Community Methodist Church of Chester. Gary Morgan died recently. He was born in southwest Los Angeles in 1936. After earning his bachelor of science in forestry at UC Berkeley, he served in the National Guard before spending 27 years with the U.S. Forest Service. After retirement he started his own company, Sierra Property Management. He was a member of the Lions Club for over 30 years, most recently in Graeagle. He actively participated in the Elks Club and as a 4-H leader. When Gary wasn't on the course or court, he could be found exploring high-country peaks, canyons, and rivers, usually picking up trash that others left behind. Gary's surviving relatives include his wife Marianne, his daughter Jenifer, his son Chris, two grandchildren, and his brother Tom.
Frank Borneman, 82, died Aug. 20, 2002 at his home. Frank was born in San Francisco, on June 22, 1920. He grew up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. During WWII, Frank served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the Hawaiian Islands and Iwo Jima. He was a member of the U.S. Pistol Team and competed in the International Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1949. In 1950, he married Dorothy Garms in Pleasanton. They made their home in Quincy, where Frank worked as a lineman for Pacific Gas and Electric Company and then as an electrician. In 1972, he and his family moved to Gooding, Idaho to farm. He was an active member of the Gooding Trap Club and enjoyed competing on the trapshooting circuit in Ariz., Nev., Idaho and Wash. He enjoyed snow skiing, hunting and fly-fishing. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Bill of Edson, Kan., daughter, Kathy Spooner of Moss Bluff, La., and four grandchildren. A celebration of his life was held on Aug. 23, 2002 at the Gooding Trap Club with Pastor Dave McGarrah of Salem, Ore., officiating. The family requests in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to a charity of your choice.
Merrillyn Roberta Roberts, 53, died Aug. 17, 2002 at Redding Medical Center in Redding. Merrillyn was born Dec. 2, 1948 in Pittsburg. She had been a resident of Westwood for 17 years. Prior to moving to Westwood, she had lived in Phoenix, Ariz. Merrillyn was an accomplished artist. She enjoyed crafts, woodwork and gardening. She was a longtime member of the Westwood Assembly of God Church community. Merrillyn is survived by her husband, Galen of Westwood; children, Elissa Bowling of Phoenix, Ariz., Lisa Somervill of Redding, Traci Kreuziger of Phoenix, Ariz. and April Somervill of Flagstaff, Ariz.; sisters, Jacki Sprigg of Westwood, Gerri Day of Anchorage, Alaska and Denise Lofgrin of Sterling, Alaska; along with three grandchildren. A celebration of Merrillyn's life was held on Aug. 22, 2002, at the Westwood cemetery in Westwood.
