Chris Dea Partee, 44, died June 25, 2003, at Plumas District Hospital in Quincy. Chris was born Oct. 5, 1958, to Jack and Mildred Layfield Burgess in Montague. She had been a resident of the Quincy area since moving from Humbolt County where she had spent most of her life, prior to moving to Plumas County. She had been employed as a bus driver for 10 years with the Plumas County Transit Authority. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping at the lakes throughout the area and touring on the back of the family Harley with her husband. Chris is survived by her husband of 27 years, Lanie of Quincy; her son, Travis of Quincy; her parents, Jack Burgess of Douglas City and Mildred Layfield of Eureka; her brothers, Danny Buriss of McKinleyville, Clint Burgess of Mt. Shasta and Chet Burgess of Quincy; and sister, Toni Burgess of Douglas City. Following cremation, a private family celebration of Chris' life will be held at a later date. A memorial service for John Brown will be held at the Hamilton Branch Fire Hall on Sunday, July 13, 2003, from 1-5 p.m. Service will be held at 3 p.m.
Viola I. Driggers Graves, 86, died June 30, 2003 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev. She was born May 17, 1917, in Fort Cobb, Okla. to James Albert and Amanda Mae Driggers. She had lived in Loyalton for the pas 61 years, moving there from Arizona. She was a homemaker for most of her life, a cook at the Loyalton school and also had been a nursing assistant at Sierra Valley District Hospital. She loved to cook for others, enjoyed collecting rocks and petrified wood, and was a member of the Loyalton Assembly of God Church for 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; son, Troyce Graves; daughter, Nedra Broyles; and sister, Willisteen Dikes. Survivors include her daughter, Joyce McGarity of Loyalton; brothers Pastor James A. Driggers of Portola, and Clarence Driggers of Gerber; and sister Myra Dawson of Loyalton; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Visitation was held on July 7, 2003, at Loyalton Assembly of God Church, followed by a funeral service in Mountain View Cemetery, Loyalton. William Carey Hammond, Sr., died on June 23, 2003, as a result of cigarette smoking. Bill was born July 8, 1932, in Knoxville, Tenn. He graduated from R.A. Long High School, Longview, Wash., in 1950. A summer job building trails for the United States Forest Service on Mount Saint Helens "led him to know the Harry Truman of the mountain." He joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Korea as a jet electrician. In 1955, he moved to California and worked at TV repair and two way radio installation in Eureka, Crescent City and Redding. He later owned a bottled water plant and delivered along the coast of Northern California. Bill was an avid stock-car racing driver and fan. In 1968, he moved to Quincy and was co-owner of Feather River Cable TV. In 1980, he moved to Portola. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Peak Hammond; and his brother, Leroy Peak Hammond. Bill is survived by his wife, Beverly of Portola; his son, William, Jr. of Tomales; and his daughter, Jody Bowersox of Quincy. A celebration of his life was held at the family home on June 28, 2003. Sherman Othel McNabb, 77, died June 30, 2003, at his home in Portola. He was born Feb. 1, 1926, in Arkansas. He lived in Portola for the past 22 years, moving there from Sacramento. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1944 to 1946, and had been self-employed for the last 40 years as a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores of Portola; sons Robert McNabb of Sacramento, Preston McNabb of Cotati and Keith Young of Susanville; daughters Jennifer Hall of Cromberg, Marlene Peterson of Citrus Heights, Anita Nolan of Pittsburgh, Pa., Margaret Teeters of Willits and Linda Healy of Sonora; brothers, John and David; sisters, Kathy and Thelma; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services were held July 3, 2003, at Shady Grove Cemetery
in Portola.
Bruce Robert Smith, 38, died while playing golf with family and friends the morning of July 1, 2003, in Greenville. Bruce was born to Bruce and Rita Souza Smith of Fall River, Mass., on Nov. 11, 1964. He had worked in the computer industry in San Antonio, Texas, until its downturn. In 2002, he moved to Greenville and had recently begun to work at Mohawk Trading Post as an attendant. He was a New England sports fan who followed the Patriots, Red Sox and Celtics avidly. He enjoyed the outdoors through fishing, gardening and golf. He loved animals and enjoyed his cats, dog and fish. Bruce is survived by his wife, Michelle; his sister, Susan Cabral of Bristol, R.I.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 5, 2003, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Greenville. Interment took place in the Greenville Cemetery. Marveen Jesse Petersen, 86, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center in Redding. She was born Oct. 30, 2002, in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Petersen was a registered nurse and a homemaker. She was also a member of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the PEO in Susanville. She is survived by son, Robert Petersen of Trou, Idaho; daughters, Sandra Engel of Redding, Calif., Christine West of Redding, and Karen Clark of McMinnville, Ore.; six grandchildren, and eight grandchildren.
Ray E. Gage died June 24, 2002, at Enloe Hospital in Chico. He was born on Aug. 31, 1914 in Alberta, Canada. He enjoyed fishing at Lake Almanor, was a skilled wood carver of waterfowl and small birds. He loved airplanes and worked for Northup Grummer until his retirement in 1983. He was fond of animals, especially his dog, Fritz. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Marie. He is survived by his three children, Donna Kath, Sharon Hood and Dennis Gage; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and his special friend Dorothy Clarey. A family celebration of his life will be held July 18, 2002. The family requests that donations in his memory be made to the Butte Humane Society, 2579 Fair, Chico, Cal. 95928.
Charles William "Mac" McCollam, 84, died at his home in Westwood on Jan. 2, 2002. He was born in Rainier, Ore. on Aug. 8, 1917, and had been a Lassen County resident for 46 years. McCollam had been a timber faller for B&B Logging for 44 years, retiring in 1981. He was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the Westwood V.F.W. He is survived by his daughters, Peggy Amos of Westwood, Linda Mellen of Woodburn, Ore. and Margaret Bigalow of Westwood; stepdaughters, JoAnne Garrett of Louisiana, Arlene Hollen of Oroville, Calif. and Patty Oxley of Palermo, Calif. and stepsons, Jack and Robert Hartley of Vancouver, Wash. and Gene Hartley of Portland Ore. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held graveside at 12 noon on Saturday, July 13, at the Westwood Cemetery. A potluck will held be immediately following at 603 Ash St. in Westwood.
Helen Bell Prince died July 4, 2002 in Sacramento. She was born Jan. 4, 1924 in Quincy to William and Marie Bell. She is preceeded in death by her son, Richard Dale Prince. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon of Sacramento; sisters, Leda Brown of Quincy and Ruth Egbert of Sattley; grandson Mike Gravert of Elk Grove and a great-granddaughter. Private graveside services will be held at a later time.
Shirley Ann Russell, 63, died at Lassen Community Hospital Saturday June 29, 2002. Russell was born on May 9, 1939 in Westwood. She was a Lassen County native and life-long resident. She had resided in Westwood until the death of her mother in 1981 at which time she moved to Susanville. She was nurtured and cared for by the Lassen Area Day Center staff. Shirley was a special and gifted child who knew no yesterday nor tomorrow but lived for today. She is survived by several cousins and a host of loving caregivers at both the Lassen Area Day Center and Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation of Susanville. She is preceded in death by her father Lloyd in 1968 and mother Cora in 1981 and one brother. A celebration of Shirley's life was held at the graveside in the Oroville District Cemetery

Irene "Nanie" Agnes Logue Torri, 103, of Loyalton, died July 1, 2002 at Sierra Valley Long Term Care. She was born Feb. 16, 1899 in Folsom and had been a resident of Sierra County for 82 years. Irene attended teachers college in Chico. She taught all grades in a one room school house on Highway 89 between Loyalton and Sierraville. She also taught C.C.D. classes at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Loyalton. She is preceeded in death by her husband, Pasquale Torri; sons, Francis and Kenneth Torri. She is survived by her daughter, Lucille Fox of Sparks, Nev.; eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was held July 3, 2002, at Holy Rosary Burial in Mountain View Cemetery, Loyalton.
Scott Marshall Wilson, 49, died July 1, 2002 at his home in Chester. He was born on Nov. 10, 1952 to Kenneth and Marjorie McAuley Wilson in Santa Rosa. He remained in Santa Rosa until the age of six, when he moved to Madrid, Spain. After graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps serving one tour in Vietnam. Scott moved to Chester in 1978, where he was employed by Plumas County as a road maintenence worker. He was a Harley Davidson aficionado and proud of his Marine Corps heritage. He was instrumental in the organization of the recent memorial unveiled at the Chester Fourth of July celebration. He was a member of the American Legion Post 664, the Chester/Lake Almanor Elks Lodge 2626, E. Clampus Vitus Vigilante Chapter 8 Post 1911 and Local 8 of the Operating Engineers. He enjoyed hunting and placer mining the streams and creeks of the area. He is survived by his wife, Sherry of Chester; daughter, Jennifer Wilson of Florida; brother, Kenneth Wilson of Santa Rosa; and many nieces and nephews. a celebration of Scott's life was held on July 8, 2002 at the Chester Veteran's Memorial Hall.
