Dorothy Jean Holsey, 78, died on May 7, 2004 at Banner Lassen Medical Center. She was born in Fort Gibson, Okla., on May 29, 1925 and had lived in Lassen County for the past 41 years. Prior to living in Susanville she had come from Vallejo,  Calif. She was very devout to her faith in the United Methodist Church of Susanville and active in all the organizations. She loved to cook, travel and mostly she enjoyed her time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel R. Holsey and brother Robert Rushing. She is survived by her son, David and his wife Nancy Holsey of Susanville; daughter Saundra and her husband Jerry of Surprise, Ariz.; three grandsons and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service for her was held on Wednesday, May 12 at Sutter Cemetery. A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 15 at the United Methodist Church in Susanville. Donations can be made to the Susanville United Methodist Church organ restoration fund in her name.

Woodrow Wayne Williams, 86, died May 6, 2004 in Sun City West, Ariz. due to injuries sustained in a fall. Williams, who was called Wayne, was born in Westwood on March 24, 1918. He was the third of four children born to Clarence and Dora Williams. For many years he worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Sunnyvale,  Calif. He retired as senior design engineer on March 1, 1979 and moved to Lake Almanor, Plumas County. Following his retirement, he returned to Westinghouse in the position of staff engineer 1980-1982. He had a playful sense of humor and enjoyed the company of others. He loved flying and in 1954 received his pilots license. He enjoyed skiing, flying, hiking, bicycling and traveling. He enjoyed spending time at his home on Lake Almanor. He is survived by his wife, Lee Mayle of California and Arizona; brother Arthur Williams of California; daughters Janice Buskell of Virginia, Catherine Riewer of California, Debra Lazard of Oregon, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A viewing was held on Thursday, May 13 at Walton's Colonial Mortuary. A graveside service was held at Susanville Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in honor of Williams.

Maurice Allen Hertzig, a longtime Westwood resident and retired fire chief, died Thursday evening with his wife and son at his side, at Saint Mary's Hospital located in Reno, Nev. Maurice was born to Alma and Nettie (Chandler) Hertzig in Rexburg, Idaho on Feb. 10, 1915. He was raised in Rexburg and was a member of the Rexburg High School class of 1934. He married his high school sweetheart, Orlene Byrne on Aug. 19, 1935. Maurice moved to Westwood in 1939 to go to work for Red River Lumber Company, and in 1941 was named the fire department's mechanic, which began his 50-year affiliation with the department. In 1948, he was named chief of the department and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1981. He led the department through the transition of the closing of the mill and company town to establish a community volunteer organization, which soon operated its own ambulance service and eventually employed four paid fireman. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Clear Creek Ward and served as Scout Master for the Boy Scout Troop No. 56, sponsored by the church for more than 20 years. He enjoyed skiing both on water and snow, and served as a longtime member of the Coppervale Ski Patrol. He was instrumental in the continued operation of the ski hill, helping to maintain the buildings and equipment. When time permitted he liked to take time to hunt and fish, as well as welding and fabrication. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Maurice is survived by his wife of 68 years, Orlene of Westwood; sons, Seth Hertzig of Rancho Cordova and Robert Hertzig of Seal Beach; sister, Mildred Brown of Rexburg, Idaho; nine grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place Wednesday, May 26, at the Clear Creek Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at the Clear Creek Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 1 p.m., with interment to follow in the Westwood Cemetery. Charles Fredrick Reed, 85, died on June 14, 2002, at his residence in Carson City, Nev. He was born on June 3, 1917, to Thomas Frederick Reed and Alma Josephine Reed. He was raised in Portola and graduated from Portola High School in 1935, along with 12 other classmates. He served in the Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic during World War II, from 1941-1945, receiving an American Defense Ribbon and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon. In 1977 he retired from the Western Pacific Railroad. Charles is survived by his wife, Alberta of Carson City; daughters, Jennifer Daniel Pendleton of Genoa, Nev. and Trina Ward Mark of Minden, Nev.; stepdaughters, Darlene Brabant of Dayton, Nev. and Jan Klier of Virginia City, Nev.; stepson, Robin Branson of Tacoma, Wash.; brothers, Jack Reed of Portola, and Joe Reed of Oroville; and several grandchildren. Following cremation, per his request, no services will be held.

Harold E. Richardson died on January 3, 2002, at his home in Mexico. He was put to rest on June 14, 2002 at the Chester Cemetery. Rich, as he was known, and his wife Florence lived in Chester for 38 years where for several years, they owned the Chester Variety Store. He also worked summers at Plumas Pines Resort and Drakesbad Guest Ranch. He is survived by his wife, Florence of Paradise, daughter; Christy Stevens of Grass Valley, and granddaughter; Lori Stevens of San Jose. Any donations in Rich's name should be given to Wildwood.

Lon Ray Forbes, 63, died at his home in Chester on Sunday, June 30, 2002. Lon was born Aug. 3, 1938 in McAlester, Okla. He had been a resident of Chester for 45 years, after moving from Placer County. Following his retirement from Collins Pine Co., he went to work as a real estate agent for Busy Bee Realty of Chester. He was a member of the Lassen and Plumas County Board of Realtors as well as a former member of the Lumber and Industrial Workers Union Local 3074 of Chester. He was an avid golfer and had won many tournaments throughout the area. He enoyed the outdoors and found great pleasure in helping to operate the Mule Shoe Mine along with panning for gold. He also enjoyed getting away and trying his luck in the casinos of Northern Nevada. He is survived by his wife Marian of Chester; daughters Debbie Forbes and Amanda Levy of Chico; brother, Bill Forbes of Stirling City; sister Alanna Forbes of Stoney Ford and four grandchildren. Visitations were held July 3, 2002. A celebration of his life took place that morning at the graveside in the Chester District Cemetery with fellow woodsman Jim Benner officiating. Vada Hannah Rankin Beckett, 96, died peacefully at her residence Tuesday afternoon June 18, 2002. Born March 25, 1906 in Chester, Ark. to Carl Benjamin and Eva Winifred Huckleberry Rankin, Vada continued to reside in the area until 1931, at which time she moved to Susanville,  Calif. She was a graduate of Walker Switch High School and went on to receive her teaching credential. She taught at Beckie Wright, Who'd-thought-it and Freedom schools in the Chester, Ark. area. She, along with her husband, owned and operated a Christmas Tree Farm for close to 60 years outside of Susanville,  Calif. Vada was a longtime, devout member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church where she was active in the Dorcas Society, helping the poor and needy of the Lassen County area. Vada is survived by her children, Carol Whiting of Ada, Okla., Hazel Nottingham of Paradise,  Calif., and Charles Beckett Jr. of Modesto,  Calif., along with 11 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years Charles W. Beckett Sr., who passed away July 12, 1983 in Susanville,  Calif. and son Dean Beckett, who passed away in Sept. of 2000. Visitations will be held Tuesday July 2, 2002 at the Susanville Seventh Day Adventist Church. Those who wish may call from 9:00-10:00 a.m. A celebration of her life will follow at the Susanville Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Jerry Wagoner officiating, commencing at 10:00 a.m., July 2, 2002. Interment will take place alongside her husband in the Diamond Crest Cemetery. An opportunity to leave a personal memorial tribute is available online at www.fehrmanmortuary.com. The family requests any donations in her memory be made to either the Dorcas Society of the Seventh Day Adventist Church or the Macular Degeneration Society, c/o Fehrman Mortuary, P.O. Jack Bolesworth Jr. died at Madrone Hospice in Yreka,  Calif. on June 20, 2002, at the age of 89. He was born in Oakland,  Calif. on July 25, 1912, and had been a Yreka resident for the past two years. He had previously resided in Lassen County from 1984 to 2000. Mr. Bolesworth had been a member of the Teamsters Union for 30 years. He was a W.W.II veteran of the U.S. Navy Sea Bee's, serving as a boatswain's mate second class in Okinawa, Taipan and Alaska. He was also a member of V.F.W. Post 2381. He was the loving father of daughter, Jacqueline Eastman of Ramona,  Calif. Other survivors include sister, Greta Toland of Medford, Ore; grandchildren, Wendy Eastman of Ramona and Brian Eastman of Murrieta,  Calif.; great-granddaughter, Ashley Eastman of Ramona; and step-daughter, Royce Fischer of Montague,  Calif. Memorial services were held at the Diamond Crest Cemetery in Johnstonville on Tuesday, June 25, at 10 a.m.

Clifford D. Combs, 56, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Lassen Community Hospital in Susanville. He was born in El Centro,  Calif., June 3, 1946, and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 24 years. He had been a carpenter, and had worked for various construction companies over a 30 year period. He was also a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the US Army. He is survived by his son, Clifford Louis Combs of Redlands,  Calif.; daughters, Elita Combs of Susanville, Lynette Adams-Combs of Redlands,  Calif., and Camille Combs of Susanville; step-daughters, Lorraine Rusich of Yucca Valley,  Calif.; Sonna Harrison of Alabama, and Antia Schwaderer of Georgia; and father, Arthur Wedge of Alabama. Also surviving are seven brothers and sisters living in Alabama; 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. No memorial services are planned at this time.

Madge Clydene Linn, 55, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center Reno, Nev. She was born June 6, 1947 in Prairie Grove, Ark. She was raised in Winslow, Ark., moving to Lassen County in 1956. She graduated from Herlong High School in 1965 and also worked in the W.E.E. program during her senior year at Sierra Army Depot. Continuing in Federal Service, she worked at Sacramento Army depot, McClellan AFB, Moffett Field, Social Security Administration in San Jose,  Calif., returning to Sierra Army Depot before her early retirement in 1978. Before moving to  Calif., she went by the name Clydene, but in high school she was called "Smitty." After that it was always "Madge" except her favorite aunt called her "Magic." She enjoyed hunting, fishing, music and people, especially. She is survived by her husband of 15 years, Robie Linn, a stepson, Ryan Linn of Joshua Tree,  Calif., Shane Sinerius of Sacramento, to whom she was a second mom and who referred to her as "Auntie Madge; aunts: Sue Friede, of Hot Spring, Ark., Norm Ruth Younger of Web city, Mo. and Gladys Russell of Duncian, Okla.; uncles: Ronnie Smith of Okla. and Don Smith of Quincy. She was buried alongside her father and mother, Clyde and Violet Smith, and next to her loving angel, young daughter Jill. Graveside services were held at the Janesville cemetery in Janesville with Chaplain C. Will Rohrer officiating. Those present at a spiritual testimonial to her passing were: her husband, dearest friends John Pezza, Jan Hanson, Milford Matt, her confidante from high school, Susan Deaton, second cousin Sharon Bauman-Roberts, and a phone prayer by her cousin Joni Smith.

Earl Howard Cantine, 66, died at the Susanville Nursing and Rehab Center on June 23, 2003. He was born in Michigan on March 14, 1937 and had resided in Susanville for the past three years, relocating from Sacramento. He had been employed as a salesman for over 40 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. He is survived by his sons, Earl and Mike Cantine of Ocean City, Maryland, Erik of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Edward of Susanville and daughter, Rachel (Cantine) Schortz of Janesville and four grandchildren. At his request, there will be no services held.

Earl Howard Cantine, 66, died at the Susanville Nursing and Rehab Center on June 23, 2003. He was born in Michigan on March 14, 1937 and had resided in Susanville for the past three years, relocating from Sacramento. He had been employed as a salesman for over 40 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. He is survived by his sons, Earl and Michael of  Pennsylvania, Erik of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Edward of Susanville and daughter, Rachel Schortz of Janesville and four grandchildren. At his request, there will be no services held.

Lois B. Trimbell, 84, died on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Banner Lassen Medical Center. She was born in Lajunta,  Colo. on Nov. 9, 1918 and was a Lassen County resident for the past 60 years. She was a cook at the Post Restaurant in Herlong for 30 years and while a cook, she had many people who loved her cooking and company. He was known to many as "mom," something she cherished as she provided a home and good food to all that came through her front door. She loved spending time with family and grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Layton Kindrick of Coos Bay, Ore.; brothers, Maurice Lindsey of Colorado and Guy Lindsey of Utah; sisters, Pauline Fuller of Kansas, Pearl Vickroy of  Washington; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2002 at the Diamond Crest Cemetery.

Ennis Miles, 74, died June 24, 2003, at Kaiser-Roseville Medical Center in Roseville. Ennis was born July 6, 1928, to Otto and Callie Gordon Miles in Pineville, La. He moved to Quincy as a young man and had resided there for most of his adult life. In 1995, he moved to Sacramento and in 2002, he moved to Rocklin to live with his daughter. He was employed in the lumber industry for more than 25 years and was a former member of the Lumber and Industrial Workers Union Local 3074, as well as being a longtime member of the Las Plumas Del Oro Chapter 8 of E. Clampus Vitus. He was a devoted member of the Quincy Starlight Missionary Baptist Church. Ennis was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time outdoors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye, and one grandchild. Ennis is survived by his wife, Sandra of Sacramento; sons, Kelly and Paul Thomas of Oroville, Calvin and Bobby Miles of Quincy, Kelly Miles of San Leandro and Ennis Miles III of Alexandria, La.; his daughters, Regina Cambell of Rocklin, Alice Miles of Sacramento, Dorothy Miles-Brown-Mitchell and Margie Bower Alexandria, La.; his brothers, Rev. Charles Miles of Carson, Rev. Moses Miles of Detroit, Mich., and Samuel Miles of San Bernadino; his sisters, Dorothy Wiggins and Era Lewis of Pineville, La., and Evelyn Burkhalter of San Bernadino; 25 grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Interment was in the Quincy East Lawn Cemetery. An opportunity to express condolences is available online at https://www.fehrmanmortuary.com.
