Myrtle Lillian Benton, 98, died July 27, 2002 in Klamath Falls, Ore. She was born March 2, 1904, in Jackson, Minn. to Peter and Marie Petersen Jacobsen. She was the eleventh of 13 children and at the age of 16 moved with her family to Lodi. In 1958 she moved to the Feather River Canyon to reside at the Old Mill Ranch in Twain and continued to to live there until 1995 at which time she moved to Grass Valley, and later to Klamath Falls, Ore., to be closer to her family. Myrtle was a dedicated homemaker who gained great pleasure in caring for her family and sharing time with them at family get togethers. She was an avid gardener who also enjoyed all types of arts and crafts, sewing and reading. Myrtle is survived by her son Gene Benton of Carmel, daughter Janet Anderson of Tulelake, sister Marie Main of Brentwood, along with six grandchildren, sixteen great-grand children and several great-great grandchildren. She will be missed by many dear friends. Myrtle is preceded in death by her loving husband Wendel, six sisters and five brothers. A celebration of Myrtle's life will be held at the graveside in the Quincy East Lawn Cemetery

Jesse Floyd Boyd, 81, died with his family at his side July 25, 2002, at Plumas District Hospital in Quincy. Jesse was born October 29, 1920 to John and Myrtle LaRue Boyd in Lee Creek, Ark. He moved to Quincy in 1951 and had worked as a self-employed contract timber faller for over 30 years. A staunch proponent of youth sports, he gained great pleasure in teaching any child the fundamentals of the sport. Jess was one of the original organizers of the Quincy Little League serving as coach of the Yankees for many years and served as an umpire for a number of years. Jesse also coached the former Mountainetts Womens Softball team. As an avid bowler he shared his love of the sport as a coach of the Quincy American Junior Bowling League team. He was a longtime member of the Quincy Bowling League, and of Quincy's first American Bowling Association's championship team. Jess's latest passion was been the game of golf. He was a member of the Mt. Hough Golf Club and had been a longtime member of the Quincy Elks Lodge. Jess is survived by his wife of over 60 years Irma of Quincy; son Ronald of Georgetown, Texas; brother Robert of Prairie Grove, Ark.; sisters Maggie Bartholomew of Fayetteville, Ark. and Jean Melvin of Van Buren, Ark.; along with three grandsons, three granddaughters and eight greatgrandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son Larry, one brother, and three sisters. A celebration of Jess's life took place at the graveside in the Quincy East Lawn Cemetery

Frank Kenneth Davies, 77, died on Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Washoe Village in Reno, Nev. He was born on March 17, 1925, in Los Angeles California, and had resided in Lassen County for the past 25 years. Davies, along with his wife Dolores, was the owner and operator of the Korner Wash & Dry in Susanville. At one time, he had been self-employed as a contractor; developing avocado ranches and reservoirs in the Santa Barbara area. He had also held cattle interests in Santa Barbara and Lassen County. He was a member of the Baptist church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dolores of Susanville; son, Larry Davies of Susanville and daughters, Christine Robertson of Janesville, Donna Bennet of Reno and Karen Hosier of Chico. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. A celebration of life will be held at the Lassen County Senior Center from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3.
Delbert R. Farwell, 68, died on Dec. 22, 2001, in Seattle, Wash. Delbert was born on Nov. 11, 1933, in Standish Calif. He graduated from Lassen High School in Susanville. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and was a flight engineer on C-141 Starlifters. He served a distinguished career, attaining the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He served his country proudly until his retirement in 1977. He was most proud of being selected as a member of only three crews that liberated POWs from Hanoi after the Vietnam War ended. At the conclusion of his military career, he went to working vending machine repair and later retired as a school bus driver for the Bethel School District. Farwell loved to fish, camp, cook and spend time with his friends. He is survived by his children, Debra Blake and Darrell Farwell; grandchildren, Jason, Christopher and Brandon Blake and Nicole and Danielle Farwell; brothers Bev Lane, and Ron Farwell and sister, Delores Hemphill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy and sister, Sharon Smity. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Janesville Cemetery. The family requests any donations be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society.
Lillian Margaret Jorgenson died in Carmichael on July 23, 2002. She was a homemaker for 53 years and a resident of Carmichael for 11 years. Lillian is survived by her son, Jerry Allan Jorgenson of Orangevale and by her daughter, Betty Brace of Roseville. Internment was held at the Chester Cemetery
on July 28, 2002.
Walter Means, 42, died on Friday, July 12, 2002, at his home in Marysville, Calif. He was born in Bridgeport, Neb. He was a employed as a loan officer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a member of the Toastmasters. He is survived by his wife, Ikuko of Marysville; daughter, Christine Means of Marysville; son, Jeffrey Means of Marysville; parents, Willard and Viola Means of Janesville; brother, Steve Means of Utah and sisters, Theresa Santoro of Madera, Calif., Beth Hyde of Susanville, Rosemary Pierce of Yuba City, Calif., Sabrina Bessmer of Richville, Calif. and Margaret Desantis and Nancy Cardenas, both of Susanville. Services were held on Wednesday, July 17 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marysville. Burial followed at Sierra View Cemetery.
Patricia M. Mesloh, 70, died on Monday, July 22, 2002, at her home in Susanville. She was born in Eureka, Calif., on March 8, 1932 and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 29 years, moving here from Los Gatos, Calif. Mesloh had been a homemaker, a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West and a member of the 1000 Trails club. She was a loving wife and mother and enjoyed needlepoint, traveling and camping. Survivors include her husband, Earl of Janesville; sons, Jerry of Los Gatos, Tim of Fallon, Nev., Mike of San Jose, Calif. and Patrick of Susanville and brother, Tom Polsley of Germany. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation was held on Thursday, July 25 at the Colonial Mortuary. Services were held on Friday, July 26 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Interment was held on Saturday, July 27 at the Sunset Memorial park in Eureka, Calif.
Shirley Nelson, 73, died on July 23, 2002 in Newport, Ore. Shirley was born on July 20, 1929 in San Francisco. For the past two years she resided in Newport, Ore., moving there from Plumas County. Shirley worked in the criminal justice system all of her life. She worked in probation, the sheriffs office and the Justice Court. She is survived by her daughter, Pam Marchetti, one grandchild and one great-granddaughter. A private family service will be held in her memory.
Robert Nomellini, 53, died on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Lassen Community Hospital. He was born in San Francisco, Calif. on April 22, 1949 and had resided in Lassen County for the past 20 years.
Christopher Openshaw, 29, died recently in Quincy. He was born September 20, 1972. Chris attended Quincy High School. He was an avid fisherman and camper. He is survived by his children, Zachary and Britney; his niece and nephew, Cameron and Kira; sisters, Angie Openshaw, Robin Openshaw and Leslie-Ann Openshaw; brothers, Shane Openshaw, Wyat Openshaw and Cody Openshaw; step-brothers Jason Mouser, Matt Mouser, Andrew Mouser and Jeremy Mouser; his father, Stan Openshaw; his mother, Barbara Burge; maternal grandparents, Bob and Harriet Taylor; and numerous aunts and uncles. Services were held at Rose Garden Quincy cemetery. He is in our hearts and prayers and will be missed by all.
Diane Lee Perry, 58, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, in Yuba City. She was born Oct. 1, 1943, in Peoria, Ill. She was a 28-year resident of Marysville-Yuba City, and was a current resident of Lake Almanor West. Diane worked as a supervisor for the Employment Development Department in Marysville, and, prior to retirement, as a manager at the EDD office in Colusa for four years. She retired Jan. 20, 2000. She was secretary for the Lake Almanor West auxiliary; a member of the Lady 49ers golf group and the Lady Elks of Chester Elks Lodge No. 2626; and a former member of the Yuba Feather Sweet Adelines singing group. She was predeceased by her father, Virgil Sprague, and brother Gary Sprague. Survivors include her companion, Tommy McCormack of Lake Almanor West; her sons, Jeffrey Perry of Folsom, and Daniel Perry of Yuba City; her daughter, Julie Martin of Carson City, Nev.; her mother, Virginia L. Sprague of Broken Arrow, Okla.; brothers, Jerry Sprague of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Dennis Sprague of Peoria, Ill.; sisters, Phyllis Turner, Jeanne Orrison and Nancy Huff, all of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and seven grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Thursday, Aug. 1, at Sutter Cemetery, in Sutter, at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to Sutter North Hospice, 826 4th St., Marysville, CA 95901.
John Frederick Smith, 89, died on Friday, June 14, 2002. He was born on Dec. 1, 1912, in Wilbur, Wash. Smith liked hunting and fishing and was a lifetime member of the NRA, as well as Grange 415. He worked on the Grand Coulee Dam and the Shasta Dam. He moved to Big Valley in 1945 and lived there until his death. Services were held at Adin Community Church in Adin, Calif. on June 20. Visitation, service and burial service were then held at the Adin Cemetery.
Donald William Still, 67, died at his home in Meadow Valley on July 9, 2002. Donald was born Jan. 31, 1935 in Chester, Pa. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1955-1958 and had been a resident of Plumas County for 20 years, where he prospected for gold. Donald is survived by an aunt in Seattle, Wash. and four nieces and nephews. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, private inurnment with military honors will take place in the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery

LaVern L. Thompson, 84, died July 20, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. LaVern was born on Aug. 16, 1917, to Georgia Louise Swanson-Ludlum and William Edward Ludlum in Savonsburg, Kan. She was married to Rex V. Thompson. LaVern was a bookeeper at Grace Presbyterian Church in Wichita, Kan. and was active in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and the P.T.A. She was also a Sunday School teacher and enjoyed gardening, crafts and traveling with Rex. She is survived by sons Jerry Thompson of Portola and Rod Thompson of Wichita, Kan. and Doug Thompson both of Wichita, Kan.; daughters Judy Voncannon of Wichita, Kan., and Patt Ludwick of Paola, Kan.; sisters Wilberta Morrison and Betty Jackson both of Iola, Kan.; brother Max Ludlum of Moran, Kan.; 28 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A service was held on July 25 at Grace Presbyterian Church in Wichita, Kan. It was officiated by Rev. Dee Cooper. Burial took place at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Wichita, Kan.
