Arlys Louise Hemping, of Portola, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Eastern Plumas District Hospital. She was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Hubbard, Iowa. After graduating from Hubbard High School in 1941, she worked in a local newspaper. During World War II, she drove truck for her father, hauling grain and livestock to local markets. She married Harry Hemping on Nov. 17, 1945. They moved to Richfield, Calif., in 1955. In 1956 they moved to Graeagle, and then in 1980 they moved to Portola. Arlys was active in the Portola Station Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, was editor for the monthly and annual newsletters, and printed the weekly bulletins. She is preceded in death by her parents, Eduard and Dorthea Sievert, and brothers Raymond and Lloyd Sievert. Survivors include her husband, Harry, of 57 years; son, Vance Hemping; daughter, Vicki Hudak; sister, Ester Baluanz, and seven grandchildren. Lawrence James Garrigan, 88, died Aug. 26, 2002 at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Susanville. Lawrence was born Oct. 20, 1913 in San Francisco. He moved to Susanville this January from Sonoma where he had lived for 11 years. He retired from the former E.H. Edwards Wire Rope Company after 40 years of service to the company. Lawrence was preceeded in death by his wife, Lena; sons, Lawrence Jr. and Ray Garrigan; and sisters, Edith and Dorothy. He is survived by his son, Michael "Shorty" Garrigan of Westwood. The memorial service for Margery B. "Maggie" Heald, born May 21, 1915, died July 4, 2002, will be held Saturday, September 14, 2002 at 3 p.m. at the Tobin Resort in Tobin. William John Klew, 65, died Sept. 3, 2002 at Queen of the Valley Hospital. William was born in Pottsville, Pa. and lived there until he was 9 years old at which time he moved to Vallejo. In 1962, he moved to Napa with his wife. William served in the U.S. Army from 1962-64. He worked for Pacific Bell for 35 years, retiring in 1990. William had a summer home in Chester. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He belonged to Masonic Lodge No. 93 F. & A.M. and Scottish Rite. William is survived by his wife, Pat of Napa; daughter, Sandra Faulk of Roseville; sons, Charles Klew of Lincoln and Kenneth Klew of Cordelia; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. At his request, no services will be held. Private inurnment will be at Chester Cemetery

Shirley Rae Donelson, 55, of Chico, died Aug. 30, 2002. Shirley was born Oct. 1, 1946 to Loren and Nona Powell in Portola. She was raised and educated in Portola and Oroville. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Ronnie Joe Donelson. Shirley is survived by daughters, Rhonda Donelson and Kathleen Cassano of Portola; sons, Bill Donelson of N.C. and Loren Donelson of Oroville; mother, Nona Powell of Chico; sisters, Marlene Hutchenson of Chico and Millie Parker of Portola; brother, Harry Powell; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Private family services were held.
Gladys Marian Parks (Best) died June 21, 2003. Gladys was born on July 21, 1926, in Belden to the Billings and Richards pioneer family. She was raised in Meadow Valley, attending elementary school there and high school in Quincy. She moved to Blue Lake when she married and had two children. She later moved to Alaska in 1974, where she met her second husband and lived there until his death when she returned to California. In November 2002, she moved to Craigmont, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Best; her parents, Lafayette and Flora Richards; her son, Nolan Parks; her daughter, Adiar Parks; her brothers, Vern, Harold, Bruce, Mark and Teddy; and her sisters, Claudean, Betty and Oleta. She is survived by her four grandchildren, Mike, Shanti, Melinda and Nolene, all of California; her sister, April Hill of Marysville; her brother, Clyde Richards of Craigmont, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 3, 2003, at 10 a.m.-noon at Fehrman Funeral Home in Quincy. Services will be held at Meadow Valley Cemetery
with burial to follow at 1 p.m.
William Carey Hammond, Sr., died on June 23, 2003. Bill was born July 8, 1932, in Knoxville, Tenn. He graduated from R.A. Long High School, Longview, Wash., in 1950. A summer job building trails for the United States Forest Service on Mount Saint Helens "led him to know the Harry Truman of the mountain." He joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Korea as a jet electrician. In 1955, he moved to California and worked at TV repair and two way radio installation in Eureka, Crescent City and Redding. He later owned a bottled water plant and delivered along the coast of Northern California. Bill was an avid stock-car racing driver and fan. In 1968, he moved to Quincy and was co-owner of Feather River Cable TV. In 1980, he moved to Portola. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Peak Hammond; and his brother, Leroy Peak Hammond. Bill is survived by his wife, Beverly of Portola; his son, William, Jr. of Tomales; and his daughter, Jody Bowersox of Quincy. A celebration of his life was held at the family home on June 28, 2003. Leslie L. Ede, 69, died June 24, 2003, in Reno, Nev. Leslie was born on the "Ede Ranch" in the Sierra Valley on Aug. 20, 1933. He moved to Reno, Nev., at a young age and graduated from Reno High School in 1952. He attended University of Nevada, Reno, majoring in soils sciences. His education was interrupted for two years when he entered the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, as a specialist first class. He married Pamela Tozour and moved to Riverside in 1959. Together they had three daughters. After their divorce, Leslie went to Vietnam during the war, as an agricultural advisor in the Palo Verde Valley, where he relocated with his daughters following his former wife's death in 1968. In May 1970, he was married to Doris Stanaland, becoming a stepfather to her two adult children. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Upon his retirement, the town of Blythe commemorated his dedication and contribution to the Palo Verde Valley agricultural community by declaring Oct. 11, 1994 as "Les Ede Day." Shortly thereafter, he returned to the Reno area. Leslie is survived by his wife Doris; his sister, Elaine; his daughters, Debra, Charene and Theresa; his stepchildren, Doris and Bill; seven grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; and one great-grandchild. Services were held at the Community Church in Loyalton on June 28, 2003. Leslie was buried in the Ede family plot in the Chilcoot Cemetery
in Chilcoot.
Robert R. Bartholomew, 83, died June 25, 2003, at his home in Sunnyvale. Robert was a Pearl Harbor survivor who served on the USS Maryland. He also saw Pacific theater action at Tarawaw, Kwajalein and Saipan. Following the war, he joined the South San Francisco Fire Department in 1950. In 1951, he moved on to the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department, then served on the Stanford University Fire Department from 1961 until his retirement in 1976. The following year he moved to Lake Almanor and joined the Peninsula Fire Department. Following the death of his wife in 2001, he moved to Sunnyvale to be near his children. He was a member of the Sunnyvale Masonic Lodge, a life member of Westwood Lodge No. 501 and was active in the Chester Methodist Church. He also enjoyed walking his labradors and folk dancing. He is preceded in death by his wife, Vivian. Robert is survived by his son, Robert K. of Boulder Creek; his daughters, Karen of Menlo Park and Breana of San Jose; and one grandson. Graveside services were held June 30, 2003, at Chester Cemetery.
Carmen Richards Cicero, 89, died in San Rafael on Dec. 6, 2002. Carmen was born in Meadow Valley in 1913 to Margaret (Yager) and Benjamin Richards. She was in the class of 1927 at Spanish Peak School (later Meadow Valley School). She soon moved to Oroville where she lived until her marriage to Howard Cicero. She lived in various parts of California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii, due to his work. She never returned to live in Meadow Valley, but made frequent trips to visit. She had been a 56-year resident of Marin County and a member of the NDGW, Marinita Parlor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard and her son, Michael. Carmen is survived by her daughter, Shirley Cicero of San Rafael; her daughter-in-law, Judy Cicero of Novato; one grandson; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; and several cousins. Her ashes will be buried in Meadow Valley Cemetery
on July 19, 2003.
Ernestine Joann "Trudy" Prichard, 70, died June 25, 2003. Trudy was born Dec. 20, 1932, to Ernest and Villa Massey Broyles in Riverside. Her family moved to Quincy. She was a 1950 graduate of Quincy High School. A year after graduation, she went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. She returned to Plumas County in 2002, residing in Portola for six months before moving to Quincy. She had been a longtime resident of Santa Rosa and had also lived in Vacaville for three years. She had recently acquainted herself with the Quincy Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Harvey. Trudy is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Greg of Quincy; children, Kelli Prichard of Portola and Randy Prichard of Edinburgh, Scotland; her sister, Marge; and four grandchildren. Following cremation, a private celebration of Trudy's life will take place at a later date. Inurnment will take place in the Rose Garden of the Old Quincy Cemetery. Marion Edward Fitch, a native of Lassen County, died June 26, 2003, at his home in Eagle Creek, Ariz. Marion was born on April 5, 1909, in Spoonville (Janesville) to Harry and Lelia Fitch. He served as captain of the California Highway Patrol in Susanville from 1959 to 1970. He was a member of the Lassen County Sheriff's Posse and the Susanville Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Deone Fitch; his brother, Zeb Fitch; and his sisters, Kathryn Bedeau and Marie Sullivan. Marion is survived by his son, Ed Fitch of Eagle Creek, Ariz.; his daughters, Sandra Price of Buhl, Idaho and Susan Ehleringer of Susanville; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at 2 p.m., at the United Methodist Church in Susanville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lassen County Sheriff's Posse Scholarship Fund.
Norma Sylvia Sloan, 74, died on June 17, 2003, at her residence in Susanville. She was born on Aug. 15, 1928, in Susanville and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 74 years. At the age of 16, she became a licensed pilot and was on her way to becoming an accomplished oil painter. She was a member of the draft board during the 50s; she was an excellent gardener, as well as an antique collector and a member of the historical society. What she enjoyed most was attending and being involved with the Lassen County Museum. She is survived by her husband, John of Susanville; son, Michael Malone of Yreka, Calif.; stepson John Sloan Jr. of Susanville; daughter, Candy Wasson of Chico. She is also survived by her mother, Katherine Manfredini, of Susanville. A memorial service was held for her at the Colonial Chapel on Saturday, June 28. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Lassen County Museum.
