Cari-Ann Frances Forbes, 33, died on Thursday, May 23, 2002, at her residence in Susanville. She was born in Warwick, R.I. on March 18, 1969, and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 17 years, moving here from Pittsburgh, Penn. Forbes had been employed by the U.S. Forest Service as a contract clerk for two years, and had also been employed as a teacher's aide. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, and loved spending time with her children and family. She was very artistic and enjoyed reading and crocheting. She is survived by her daughters, Tannis Forbes and Keygan Forbes of Susanville; father, Bob Saumond of Susanville; mother, Arlene Zelano of Susanville; sister, Suzanne Granger of Hudson, Mass.; grandparents, Clarence and Alice Gaumond of Providence, R.I.; and uncle, Richard Zelano of St.. Petersburg, Fla. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by grand-parents, Joseph and Frances Zelano. A celebration of life will be held at the Church of the Nazarene at noon, today Tuesday, June 4. The family requests that any donations be made in Cari-Ann's memory to a scholarship fund being set up for her children at the Lassen County Federal Credit Union.
Linda Lou Ward, 44, died on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the Sunbridge Skilled Nursing Facility in Susanville. She was born in Klamath Falls, Ore., on Sept. 26, 1957, and had been a Lassen County Resident for the past three years, moving here from Dorris, Calif. Ward was active in the L.A.D.C. group and she enjoyed basketball, bowling, and watching Disney movies. She also was a member of the Baptist Church. She will be missed by her family and friends whom she loved; as well as her dogs, Mickey and Dart. She is survived by brothers, John Earl Ward Jr. of Dorris, Phillip Wayne Hoskins of Klamath Falls, , and James P. Hoskins of Portland, Ore.; twin-sister, Glenda Baker of Janesville; and sisters, Mary Search of Susanville. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held at the Colonial Mortuary Chapel on June 3. Interment will be held at the Lakeview Cemetery
in Macdoel, Calif., at 3 p.m., today, Tuesday, June 4.
Mary Ellen Doll, 93, Diedat the on May 29, 2002, Lassen Community Hospital. She was born in Muskogee, Okla., on Jan. 8, 1909, and had been a resident of Lassen County for the last 27 years, moving here from San Pablo, Calif. She was a homemaker her entire adult life, and a member of the Baptist Church. She was a volunteer for Brown Bag in Janesville, delivering lunches to senior citizens. Her hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, and playing cards. She is survived by her husband, James Doll, of Janesville; sons, John Templeton of Colfax, Calif., and George Ward of Janesville; daughters, Mary Elizabeth Canaday of Modesto, Patricia Ann Felts of Visalia, and Carolyn Lea Reeve of Reno; and brothers, Chris Christian of San Pablo, and Faye Sterling of Richmond. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Janesville Cemetery
on Monday, June 3.
Pauline Vogan, 87, died Tuesday, May 28 at Enloe Hospital, in Chico. She was born in Larain, Ohio on March 17, 1915, and had been a Chester resident since 1958. She also spent many winters with her husband in Yuma, Ariz. During her career, she was employed by California Fruit Exchange in Sacramento, Lassen Volcanic National Park in Mineral, and owned the D & L Laundromat in Chester with her husband, for many years. She loved knitting and crocheting, gardening, and was past president of the Good Sam RV Club, Sierra Sam Chapter. She was instrumental in forming North Sierra Sams Chapter in Plumas and Lassen Counties. She also co-authored, "What Grows in Chester", and was a former president of the Chester Garden Club. She is survived by her husband Walter Vogan of Chester, her sons Larry Vogan of Susanville, and Dennis Vogan of Ketchikan, Alaska. Private family services will be held at the Chester Cemetery.
James K. Johnson, 79, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center, Reno, Nev. He was born April 30, 1923, and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 15 years. Johnson enjoyed restoring cars but he mostly enjoyed his grandchildren. He is survived by three sons, Tommy of Coarse Gold, Calif., Mark of Sacramento, Calif., and Roy of Doyle, Calif.; four daughters, Nancy Tarkley of Lakeport, Calif., Shirley Richison of Clayton, Okla.; Kathy Johnson of Doyle, Calif., Lahoma Victory of Doyle, Calif.; brother, Charles Mills of Arkansas, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and his daughters Geanie Brackett, and Gwen Cooley. Services were held June 3, at Colonial Chapel, Graveside is being held at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 4, at Doyle Cemetery.
Peggy Sayers, 62, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at her residence. She was born on Feb. 9, 1944, in Speedwell, Va., and had been a Lassen County resident for 43 years. she had been a homemaker, enjoyed playing bingo, fishing, traveling and collecting ceramic pigs. Sayers was very involved with the youth in Susanville, organizing and running the fishing derby and pheasant hunts for the kids. She was also a member of the Sportsman's Club. She is survived by her husband, Douglas; two sons, Harloe Sayers of Reno, Nev., and Richard Sayers of Virginia; one daughter, Stephanie Sayers-Van Brunt of Susanville; three brothers, Butch, Dean and Harley Brown all of Virginia; two sisters, Barbara Parks of North Carolina, Kathleen Brown of Virginia; along with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, June 7, at Gospel Tabernacle with reception to follow.
Helyn Teresa Domark, 84, died Sunday morning, May 26, 2002, at Enloe Community Hospital in Chico. Born May 3, 1918, in Chicago, Ill. She was raised in Chicago, moving to the west coast 35 years ago. She worked as an executive secretary for both Swift and Co., and Ford Motor Co. She wrote a column, "Almanor Almanac" for the Chester Progressive for many years. Helyn had been a resident of the Lake Almanor Peninsula for close to 25 years, moving from Anaheim, following her husband's retirement from Ford Motor Co. They had recently moved to Chico. A devoted member of Christ the King Catholic Church, she served as president of the Altar Society. She took an active part in the affairs of the Chester-Lake Almanor area as a member of the Seneca Health Care District Ladies Auxiliary, the Lake Almanor Fire Sirens Auxiliary and the Lake Almanor Country Club Women's Club. She is a former member of the Aeronutronics Wives Club of the Ford Motor Co. Helyn is survived by her husband of 53 years, Kasimir, of Chico, and six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Jack Hannigan and Lee P. Hannigan, and her sister Annamae Hannigan. Following cremation, a celebration of her life was held at the graveside in the Chester District Cemetery, on Saturday, June 1. Ann Aurora Johnson McCullough, 90, died with her family at her side the evening of Monday, May 20, 2002, at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Quincy. Ann was born June 9, 1911, in Livingston, Mont., to Annie Merene and John Johnson. She was the second of four girls. Ann graduated from Erasmus High School in New York City. Following her graduation, she worked for many years as a hostess at Schraft's Restaurant where she enjoyed seeing and serving the many celebrities that frequented this famous restaurant during the thirties. In 1941, Ann enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Corps. Following basic training she received an appointment to Officers Candidate School and after receiving her commission, Lt. Johnson traveled the East Coast as a recruiter. She soon received command of a WAAC Company at Gowen Air Field in Boise, Idaho. There she fell in love with John McCullough, a young B-24 pilot from Mont. They were married in the base chapel in 1943 with full military honors. Following her husband's discharge from the military the family moved to Deer Lodge, Mont., where they opened a flying service that taught many GI's how to fly. Several of their students went on to become airline pilots. Ann and her family eventually settled in Sunnyvale, where her husband was employed as a corporate pilot. Ann enjoyed traveling with him on his flights around the country. Ann moved to Quincy in 1991 to be near her family. She soon became actively involved in small town life again. She was an accomplished artist who enjoyed painting in oils, she delighted in providing studio space for her daughter and numerous other local artists along with providing a bit of constructive advice. She could often be found attending the art exhibits in the area. She also gained great pleasure in being the hostess of Quincy's "Grand Central Station"- a meeting place for her granddaughters and their friends. Ann is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Marilyn and John Hoffman of Quincy, her two granddaughters, Alison Hoffman of Sacramento and Jennifer Hoffman of Chico, nephew Les MacCormick of Oak Harbor, Wash., and many other family members in Cali., Wash., Texas and Mont. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, a celebration of her life along with inurnment will take place in Paradise Valley's Pioneer Cemetery

Elias Labrado "Eli" Arenivas, 77, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at Seneca District Hospital in Chester. Born to Mexican immigrants Antonio and Vicenta Labrado Arenivas in El Paso, Texas on July 20, 1924. He moved to Westwood at the age of five in 1929. Eli attended school in Westwood where he competed in both track and field and baseball at the high school level. He was drafted during his senior year of high school and went on to serve his country with the U.S. Army as a rifleman with the 526th Armored Infantry Division throughout Europe during World War Two. Eli had worked in the lumber industry for more than 40 years, retiring in 1986. He had worked for Fruit Growers Supply Co. until the closing of the Westwood mill. Eli had been a longtime member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood along with the Lumber and Production Workers Union Local 3074 of Chester. Eli was an avid and active proponent of youth sports. He was instrumental in the reformation of the Westwood Little League and was recently given the honor of throwing the opening pitch of the 2002 season. He will be remembered for the compassion shown to the many seniors in need within the Westwood community. Eli is survived by his children Tony Arenivas of Chico, Debra Arenivas of Sacramento and Charles "Chuck" Hammit of Westwood; sisters Margarita Egstad of North Highlands and Carmen Hernandez of El Paso, Texas; and two grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary in 1988. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will take place at 7 p.m. on June 4 at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on June 5 at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood, followed by burial with military honors next to his late wife in the Diamond Crest Cemetery

William H. Toscani, 54, died Friday, May 24, 2002 from injuries incurred in a logging accident along the Middle Fork of the Yuba River in Nevada County. William was born to Chester and Leah Toscani on December 31, 1947 in Greenville. He spent most of his life in Indian Valley. William attended school in Taylorsville, graduating with honors from Greenville High School in 1966. He attended Chico State College. William served his country as a member of the U.S. Army and had spent a tour of duty in Vietnam. He worked many years in the logging industry as a tree cutter/faller and had gained great pleasure in life working in the natural environment of the forest. He was a talented woodworker and will be remembered for his many wood logging equipment models he had constructed. He was a caring member of the community and was always there to lend a hand to the seniors. Bill had been a longtime member of the Indian Valley Grange. Bill is survived by his sister Margaret, of Orland; his brother, Richard Toscani, of Cool; two nieces and three nephews; his aunts Hilda and Lois Toscani, both of Susanville; along with many other aunts, uncles and cousins. Following cremation a celebration of his life will be held at the graveside in the Greenville District Cemetery

William "Swede" Andrew Nelson, 69, died May 31, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. Mr. Nelson was born on Jan. 9, 1933, in Portola. He was raised in Beckwourth, attending schools in Loyalton, and graduating in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in the timber industry, retiring from Sierra Pacific Industries. Swede enjoyed being in the outdoors, fishing, and for a time bowling. He is preceded by his wife Peggy, and two brothers. He is survived by his son, Joe Nelson of Sonora; daughters Lynda Cassady of Sacramento, Karen Lucci of Folsom and Loretta Nelson of Woodinville, Wash.; as well as ten grandchildren. Graveside funeral service was held Tuesday, June 4, in Whispering Pines Cemetery
in Portola.
