Mulkh Raj
Mulkh Raj was born on September 14, 1942
in Suva, Fiji and
Passed away peacefully on June 1, 2009
in Castro Valley, at the age
of 66. Mulkh was born and raised
in the Fiji Islands and migrated
to the United States in 1962. He
worked for the City of Livermore
at the Las Positas and Springtown
Golf Courses as a Certified Golf
Course Superintendent for the
last 40 years. Mulkh was also
one of the founding members of
the Shri Guru Ravidass Temple
in Pittsburg, CA.
Mulkh is survived by his wife
Kartar and their three sons as
well as four brothers, four sisters,
and three grandchildren. Mulkh
was a great husband, father, and
grandfather. He will be greatly
missed.
Funeral services were held
June 4 in Livermore.

Madeleine G. Silvey
Madeleine Silvey, 89, of
Livermore, returned to the Lord
May 25, 2009. She was born in
the small mining town of Sutersville,
PA on April 1, 1920.
She attended Catholic grammar
school with her brother
and sister. In her twenties, she
worked in Washington D.C. To
support WWII, she joined the
Marilyn Club, completing many
solo flights buzzing over tops of
hedges and barns. She moved to
Stockton, CA with her family in
1945. She met her husband Tom
while working at Sharp General
Depot. They were married in
1950 and moved to Livermore in
1962. She was very proud of her
Catholic faith and was an active
member of St. Michael's Church.
She made many life-long friends
while working at the Ark Preschool
and St. Michael's rectory.
She cherished the close friendships
she shared with neighbors
and fellow parishioners.
Madeleine was preceded in
death by her husband Tom. She
will be especially missed by her
in-laws Rex Funk, Kay Spaniel,
Edna Dick and Pat Lang, her
son Tom Silvey Jr., daughters
Michelle Walter, Madeleine
Heal, Mimi Testerman, Monique
Avdienko, and spouses, 9 grandchildren
and many nieces and
nephews.
A vigil service was held at
7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 31 at St.
Michael's Church, Livermore.
A Mass was celebrated Monday
June 1st at the church. In lieu of
flowers donations can be made to
St. Michael School. Holy Angels
Funeral & Cremation Center, St.
Michael's Cemetery.
James Brendon Hanlon
James Brendon Hanlon was
born in East Boston on October
18, 1924. He passed away peacefully
at his home in Livermore on
May 22, 2009, after a prolonged
illness. His wife, Ruth, and family
members were at his side.
James was active in Sirs 101
(Sirs in Retirement) in Livermore.
Until his illness, he enjoyed
the Design Review group
of former Lockheed co-workers
from Sunnyvale and Palo Alto,
California, who met on Friday
mornings at Carrow's on Saratoga
Avenue in San Jose.
James and his wife, Ruth,
enjoyed many travel adventures
after their marriage in May 1990.
Some of their memorable trips
were a Panama Canal cruise,
an Elderhostel trip to the British
Isles that included a week
in Scotland, a week in Wales,
and a week in Ireland. Another
Elderhostel trip was a tree week
tour of France studying various
artists that consisted of a week
in the South of France, including
Monte Carlo, a week in Provence
and culminating in a week in
Parish with a farewell dinner at
the Louvre. A not to be forgotten
trip was to Africa, a two week
adventure on safari. We would
see jaguars in trees, cheetahs with
their cubs, and lions mating, etc.,
etc. Another trip James enjoyed
was to Ireland, where he had to
drive on the left side of the road
and where we stayed at a different
farm house every night.
James is survived by Ruth
and her children, Michael Ryon,
Claudia Bleyle and her son Ryan
Bleyle and his wife Dianne; Judi
Rice and her children Jessica
and Jordan; Scott and his wife
Meaghan and Patrick Ryan and
his wife Ellen.
James was preceded in death
by his first wide Anne in 1987
and a daughter, Kathleen in
1994. Nine surviving daughters
are Margaret Schauer, Paula
Reber, Louise Trainor, Elizabeth
Adolph, Colleen Solomon,
Patricia Hanlon, Nancy Johnston,
Barbara Rooney, Lauretta
McCarthy and their respective
husbands. Jim is also survived
by 26 grandchildren and 9 great
grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial
was celebrated at St. Michael's
Church in Livermore on May
28. Following the service, a cavalcade
of vehicles was escorted
to the Mission City Memorial
Park in Santa Clara. After the
graveside service, the attendees
were invited to gather at Carrow's
Restaurant on Saratoga Ave. for
a reception.
James will be greatly missed
by his wife, family and friends.
Herbert Walter Quick
Herbert was born on Feb. 9,
1928 in Johnson City, New York.
He passed away in San Jose on
Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the
age of 81.
Herbert was a physicist, engineer,
mathematician and technical
writer and editor. He worked
at Intel, NASA and Lawrence
Livermore National Lab before
he retired in 1997. He served the
country as a Sergeant in the US
Air Force.
Herbert is survived by his
loving wife Lulu, his children,
Yvonne Gomez of San Jose,
Denise Quiapo of Stockton, Michelle
Miller of Arizona, Christopher
Quick of San Jose, Valarie
Kramer and Kathy Smith, both
of Sacramento, and numerous
grandchildren.
A Visitation will be held on
Friday, June 12 from 4-8 p.m.,
Funeral Service will be held on
Saturday, June 13 at 11 a.m., all
at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East
Ave., Livermore.
In lieu of flowers, donations
are suggested to a charity of
choice.
