Don Charles Harris
At 81 years of age, Don died peacefully
at home on December 20, 2007.
He will be remembered forever as a
kind and generous man with strong
convictions and a keen wit.
Don was born February 6, 1926
and raised in Los Angeles (along with
brother Ted) where he won many state
and national tennis championships as
a teenager and was an active member
of the L.A. Tennis Club. Throughout
the years he stayed in close contact and
enjoyed his friendships with many of
his original tennis buddies. During
WWII Don joined the Air Force and
was stationed in San Francisco. He
was employed in the automobile business
for his entire professional career;
first with the Oldsmobile Division of
General Motors and later with the
Lucas Dealership Group in San Jose
before settling into retirement.
An important attribute of Don’s
life was his infectious love of music.
Jazz was his musical passion. However,
he did enjoy other styles as long
as the music was “good.” He had
extensive knowledge of the musicians
as well as their music and loved to
attend live concerts and the symphony.
He was an accomplished piano player
himself and at the age of 81 allowed
himself to admit that progressive rock
such as James Taylor and Paul Simon
had merit.
Don was also an avid golfer and in
1975 joined the Round Hill Country
Club where he enjoyed the friendship
of many fellow golfers.
Don is survived by his wife, Paul
Awtry Harris his three children, Kimberly
Harris, Kathy Welk and Chuck
Harris and his four grandchildren,
Micah, Conner, Joshua and Christian.
And of course, his beloved dog, Penny.
No formal service will be held. On
his birthday, February 6, at 2:00 p.m.
family and close friends will celebrate
his life at Round Hill with warm stories,
laughter and jazz.
Don would like to say “Thank you
for a wonderful life.”
