Arthur Garcia, 64, of Visalia died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001. He was a truck driver.
Anne Bahnsen
Homemaker
Anne Elizabeth Bahnsen, 88, of Visalia passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001. She was a homemaker for 72 years.
She was born on Aug. 16, 1912, in Saratoga, Wyo. She and her first husband, Everett Hulse, moved to Exeter in 1936. In 1961, she married Jay Bahnsen. Both husbands preceded her in death.
She is survived by son, Ray Hulse of Visalia; daughter, Juanita Botkin of Dinuba; stepson, Gary Bahnsen of Sheridan, Wyoming; step-daughter, Pat Delany of St. David, Ariz.; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Monday at Evans-Miller Exeter Chapel. Chapel services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
Sue McLain

Sue McLain, 89, of Visalia died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001. She was a homemaker.
Sue was born in Altus, Okla., on Jan. 10, 1912, to Arthur and Minnie Banks and grew up in Oklahoma prior to moving to the Visalia area in 1946.
She and Alva McLain were married for 56 years and lived in Ivanhoe for many years when he passed away in 1987. She moved to Walnut Park in 1988, where she made many friends. She really enjoyed having a good friendship with the housekeeping staff. She was a longtime member of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ and more recently the West Visalia Church of Christ.
She is survived by her son, Gary and wife Ilene McLain of Visalia and her daughter, Sonya and husband Richard Stokes of Visalia; her seven grandchildren, Randy Stokes of Nashville, Tenn., Ricky Stokes, Marla Conway, Rusty Stokes, Kevin McLain and Christ McLain all of Visalia and Ryan McLain of Olalla, Wash.; eight great-grandchildren; Sean, Erik, Landon and Kaley McLain, Farrah Manthei and Raquel Stokes, James and Brandon Conway; her brother, Royal Banks of Mustang, Okla.; her sisters, Dorothy Chamberlain of Muskogee, Okla., Marie Lunday of Bethany, Okla., and Bernice Watson of Clovis, N.M.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. today at Visalia District Cemetery. Arrangements are by Miller Memorial Chapel, Visalia.

TULARE -- Lyle K. Paxton, 77, of Tulare died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001. He was a farm manager for Tulare Joint Union High School.
Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Hamilton Peers Lorentzen Funeral Chapel, Tulare. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Tulare. Interment will be at Tulare District Cemetery.
Mark Steen
Groundskeeper
Mark Robert Steen, 20, of Tulare died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001.
Mark was born on Oct. 16, 1980 in Lindsay. He was raised and educated in Visalia until his junior year, when he moved to Tulare, where he finished his education. As a youth, Mark enjoyed BMX racing, where he received numerous trophies. He also played baseball, Pop Warner football and loved jet-skiing, boogie boarding and snowboarding. Until recently, he was a groundskeeper for the city of Tulare. At the time of his death, he was making preparations to move to Tahoe, where he planned to attend junior college and work at one of the local ski resorts.
Survivors include his mother, Gail Steen; companion, Mark Brown of Tulare; grandparents Fern Lence of Sunnyvale, Verna Mannan of Palm Springs and Clara Steen of Porterville; brothers, David Steen of Tulare and Jay Steen of Redondo Beach; and aunts and uncles Jeff and Patricia Steen of Yountsville, David and Cathy Steen of Porterville, Gary and Jeannette Mannan of San Clemente and Danny and Terri Torres of Porterville. He leaves behind many close and special friends, "You know who you are."
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, 1100 Sowell St., in Visalia. Arrangements are by Goble-Miller Funeral Chapel.

Wiley Carl Zink, M.D.
1912 -- 2001
Longtime area resident, Wiley Carl Zink, M.D., passed away on Feb. 2, 2001, at the age of 88. Dr. Zink was born in Omaha, Neb., July 29, 1912, and received his undergraduate and graduate education at the University of Nebraska, completing his M.D. in 1937. During his university years, he helped pay for his education by playing the piano and leading a popular 15-piece dance band. The group played on alternate Saturday nights with another local dance band led by Lawrence Welk. The two bandleaders reunited 30 years later.
In 1937, Dr. Zink moved to California where he completed his medical/surgical internship at Merritt Hospital in Oakland. In 1938, he married Veronica Marie Lynch, also a native of Omaha. In 1939, Dr. Zink moved to Tulare for his medical/surgical residency at Tulare County Hospital. In 1940, he joined Charles Mathias, M.D., as a partner in private practice. Twenty years later, that partnership was amicably dissolved. He continued in solo medical practice until 1977 when he semi-retired.
During World War II, Dr. Zink volunteered for the Navy as a flight surgeon and served three years in the United States and Grand Cayman before being discharged as a lieutenant commander in November 1945. He then resumed private practice in Tulare.
During his 40-year medical career in Tulare, Dr. Zink was a member and former president of the Rotary Club, the 20-30 Club, the Elks Club, the Tulare County Medical Society, the Tulare Country Club, the Visalia Country Club and the Psoriasis Club. He co-founded the Tulare County Unit of the American Cancer Society and served twice as its president. With a local pathologist, Dr. Zink co-founded the tumor board and tumor registry at the Tulare District Hospital and later at the Kaweah Delta Hospital in Visalia. Dr. Zink also served as Chief of Staff at Tulare District Hospital.
Dr. Zink was a lifelong golfer, hunter and fisherman. He was also a local rancher with acreage primarily consisting of walnuts and Santa Rosa plums. In 1973, he was widowed, and in 1974, he married Joan Weisner, a resident of Visalia. In 1980, the Zinks began spending the winter months in Mexico, and in 1991, they moved from Tulare to Visalia. Dr. Zink is survived by his wife; two daughters, Claudia Lee of Cypress and Marcia Meeker of Princeton, N.J.; three granddaughters; and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be at a future date. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to St. John's Episcopal Church in Tulare.

TULARE -- Alfredo Tristan Alvizo, 70, of Tulare died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001.
He was a maintenance man and last worked for Ruiz Frozen Foods.
Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton Peers Lorentzen Funeral Chapel, Tulare.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Tulare.
Interment will be at North Tulare District Cemetery.

TULARE -- Marian L. Butts, 73, of Tulare died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001.
He was a retired bus driver and cafeteria manager.
Rosary will be 6 p.m. Sunday at Miller's Tulare Funeral Home.
Mass will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Rita's Catholic Church, Tulare.

TULARE -- Mable R. Gross, 80, of Tulare passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in Bakersfield.
She was a retired care nurse at Terrance Park Convalescent Hospital, Tulare.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Goble-Miller Funeral Chapel, Tulare.
Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Tulare District Cemetery.

He was a handyman.
