Jovita Buenrostro

Jovita Buenrostro died Dec. 2, 2003, in Gilroy following a brief illness.

She was born in Mexico 92 years ago. Mrs. Buenrostro lived in Gilroy for more than 45 years.

She was the wife of the late Luis Buenrostro.

She is survived by her daughter Luz Del Toro of Gilroy; grandchildren Uriel Del Toro, Gina Del Toro, Jovita Del Toro, Rosa Del Toro, Rosendo Del Toro and Luiz Del Toro, all of Gilroy; and 14 great-grandmother.

Vigil Services will be held on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Funeral services will begin on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and then proceed to St. Mary’s church for a funeral mass at 10 a.m.

Manuel R. Corona

Manuel R. Corona, 51, died Nov. 23, 2003.

He was a native of Gilroy. Manuel attended Gilroy schools and worked for seven years at Gilroy Foods Cold Storage then to Owens Corning in Santa Clara for 25 years as a center control operator. Manuel enjoyed this last year as a grandfather visiting all of his grandchildren and had many memorable moments with them.

He is survived by his children Alicia Corona and her husband Ramiro Moreno of  Texas, Manuel A. Corona Jr. and his wife Beatrice of Arizona, Andre R. Corona of  Texas, April Corona of Arizona, Cassandra, Cindy and Catrina Corona of Union City, his mother and her husband Margie and Henry Polanco of Morgan Hill; his sister Abby and her husband David Lujan Sr., sisters Olivia Corona and Helen Corona; brother David Corona, all of Gilroy; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Y. Corona, his sister Jennie Cavazos and his brother Gabriel R. Corona Sr.

Services took place this morning, Dec. 5, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Burial was at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.

Genevieve Vanella

Genevieve Vanella died in her home Dec. 1, 2003, at the age of 85.

She is survived by children Vita Lawson, Frances Duval, Susan Briggs, Anthony Vanella, Richard Vanella, Frank Vanella, Eugene Vanella and Gina Zuniga; 23 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; brothers Sam Zangri, Tony Zangri; and sisters Emanuel Zengri and Susan Staggs.

Funeral Mass was this morning, Dec. 5, at St. Catherine Church. Interment was at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara.

Services were under the direction of  Johnson Funeral Home.

Robert Ladd Garber

Robert Ladd Garber died Dec. 2, 2003.

He was born July 10, 1957. He served in the U.S. Navy 1974-78 with an honorable discharge.

He is survived by his mother Darlene Sanfilippo; daughter Morgyne Garber; grandson Samuel Garber; brother Todd Garber; sisters Laree Wagner and Heather Smith; sister-in-law Marie Garber; nieces Atlantis Wagner, Tina Garber and Kasci Garber; and nephew Raymond Harris.

He was preceded in death by his son, Justin Garber, and his father, Robert Garber.

He was a wonderful friend, son, brother, father, uncle and grandfather. He will be missed.

Services were Thursday, Dec. 4, at  Johnson Funeral Home.

Carl Breton Sr.

Carl McKown Breton Sr. died Dec. 7, 2002, in San Jose at the age of 70.

Born Sept. 6, 1932, Breton was a long time resident of Morgan Hill. He was a graduate of Live Oak High School and was employed at  Johnson Lumber.

He is survived by his wife Caroline of 47 years; son Carl M. Breton Jr. and daughter-in-law Kim Breton of Salinas; daughter Cathy Granata and her boyfriend Tim Beckley of Gilroy; and grandchildren Jarod and Nicholas Breton and Alyssa Granata.

A memorial service will be at noon Wednesday, Dec. 11, at  Johnson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Lions Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 464, Morgan Hill, CA 95038.

Mary Volk Barry

Mary Volk Barry died Dec. 6, 2002, in Morgan Hill. She was 87.

Mary was born in Brideport, Conn. She served as an assembler for Dictaphone Corp. for 42 years.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Barbara Mariano of Morgan Hill; sisters Elizabeth Volk and Anna Pavik of Morgan Hill; grand children Patricia Gustafson and David Mariano of Morgan Hill; and great-grandchildren Nicholas Gustafson and Patrick Gustafson.

Arrangements were under the direction of  Johnson Funeral Home. No service will be held locally. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday Dec. 13, at Adzima Funeral Home in Stratford, Conn. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Straford.

Lael M. McCormack

Lael Munster McCormack died Dec. 2, 2002, in Gilroy following a brief illness.

Lael was born in Berkeley on March 5, 1929. She graduated from Anna Head Royce School of Berkeley and was a member of the Alfa Phi Sorority at UC Berkeley. She graduated in 1968 with honors from the first graduating class of Gavilan Junior College and went on to San Jose State to receive her degree in Art History.

Lael was very active in her devotion to the community of Gilroy; serving on the Gilroy School Board, the Parents Teachers Association, the Gilroy Assistance League, the Children’s Home Society, Arts and Cultural Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, Board of the Physically Challenged Appeals Committee and received Woman of the Year Award in 1967. She overcame paraplegia secondary to Polio Myelitis in the year 1954 and went on to raise her four wonderful children. Lael spent every summer of her life, since age 3, at Echo Lake in the high Sierras. It was a very special place to which she took her family where they kayaked, swam, canoed and visited with her many friends.

At 16, she was California State Junior Tennis Doubles Champion. She spent her life serving the American Red Cross, which led to her many years of teaching swimming lessons to the community and the establishment of the McCormack School of Swimming, founded in 1976. She took second place in freestyle at the 1980 National Para Olympics in NewYork. Lael was a former member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, founding member of Bethel Baptist Church of Morgan Hill and often attended South Valley Community Church.

She was a woman of indomitable courage and spirit. Her life was an example showing that, despite having a major handicap and being confined to a wheelchair for 48 years, life can be lived actively, joyfully and full of love.

Ha’ ale’ale i ka pu’uwai - “A heart filled with love”

She is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Dr. Joseph G. McCormack of Gilroy; children Camille McCormack of Molokai, Hawaii, Christine McCormack of Gilroy, Carla Adams of Gilroy and Celia McCormack of Gilroy; grandchildren Katherine vonStrasser of New York City, Scottie Adams of Gilroy, Peter Adams of Gilroy, Christopher Adams of Gilroy and Greggory Adams; brother Gregg Munster of Bend, Oregon; niece Mary Mills of Greenwich, Conn.; and sister-in-law Elaine Swanson of San Diego. She was the aunty of many and the beloved friend of Faith Peterman of Gilroy.

A memorial service will be held for Mrs. McCormack at the Gilroy Presbyterian Church at a later date with a reception following the service in the church fellowship hall.

The family asks that any be made to the Lael McCormack Memorial Fund c/o South Valley National Bank, Gilroy.

Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.
