Bernaldo Garza
Bernaldo Garza died Oct. 23, 2003, in Gilroy. He was 43
Bernaldo is survived by his children Corinna, Monica and Gabriel, all of Gilroy; their mother Vera Garza; grandson Eric Cardenas; parents Jose and Socorro Garza of Washington; brother and sisters Rudy and Debbie Garza of Hollister, Evangelina and Luis Hurtado of Gilroy, Maria Gonzales of Washington, Estela and David Ortega of Washington, Ofelia and Joaquin Garcia of San Martin, Isabel Garza and Jimmy Prado of Gilroy, Anna and Hector Deleon of Gilroy, and Josie Garza of Morgan Hill. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Bernaldo was preceded in death by his brother Joey Garza and niece Hilda Hurtado, both of Gilroy.
Visitation was this afternoon at Habing Family Funeral Home with Vigil Service at 6 p.m. Funeral Services will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, then to St. Mary’s Church for Mass at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilroy.
Donations for funeral expenses would be greatly appreciated.
Walter James Tarp
Walter James Tarp died Oct. 22, 2003, in Santa Cruz. He was 82.
Born in Madrone on Oct.13, 1921, Walt was a World War II veteran and loved the outdoors, spending many years fishing, hunting and camping. He loved spending time growing flowers and vegetables in his garden. He was a proud member of Local 38, the Masons and Eastern Star, San Martin Lions and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a good and honest man and was loved by all who knew him.
He was a resident of La Posada in Santa Cruz and will be missed by many friends there.
He was the beloved husband to Betty for 38 years, warm and loving father of Terri Toste and her husband Pete of Sacramento and Jim Tarp and his wife Karen of Morgan Hill. He will be missed by his grandchildren: Mike Toste and his wife Gail, Stefine Toste, Erik Tarp and his wife Wende, Prandy Montarbo and Danielle Tarp; and his great grandchildren: Devon, Drew, River, Ryann, Morgan, Larry, Madison, Derrick and Devyn.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Morgan Hill Masonic Temple, 380 W. Dunne Ave.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any contributions be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
Pastura Bagood
Pastura “Pat” Bagood died Oct. 28, 2003, at home in Gilroy following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Julio Bagood.
Pat was born in Walalua, Oahu, Hawaii, 80 years ago. She moved the California in 1926 and to the Gilroy area in the 1940's. Mrs. Bagood worked at the Filice and Perrelli Cannery, in San Martin for Driscoll Strawberries and then spent 24 years at IBM as an administrative assistant. Pat was a founding member of the Fil-Am Senior Center in Gilroy and was a member of the Vasayan Trust. She enjoyed traveling in her RV with her husband and was an avid seashell collector.
She is survived by her daughter Camille L. Bagood of Gilroy; grandchildren Rachel Bagood of Santa Maria, Kathy Bagood of Santa Barbara, Elizabeth Bagood of Santa Maria, Alicia Bagood of Fresno and Phillip Bagood of Santa Maria; great-grandchildren nieces and nephews; and her adopted family, the Paul and Barbara Mirelez family.
She was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Bagood, and granddaughters Corrina Bagood and Elaine Bilstad.
Viewing will begin on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m., at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy, with Vigil Service at 5 p.m. Service will begin on Monday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home and then proceed to St. Mary’s Church for Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Mary Valine Fernandes
Mary Valine Fernandes died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at the age of 90.
Mary was a very active, creative person who was forever young. She was an extraordinary seamstress and a local artist of some renown. She loved gardening and playing bridge. She was a very giving person and will be missed by all who knew her.
Mary was born in Hanford and raised in the Tulare area. She went to Surprise School and graduated from Tulare Union in 1931. She married Joe V. Fernandes Jr. and they had two children. Joe farmed and Mary was a seamstress and an artist.
Joe died in September of 1997. A grandson, Aaron Joseph, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her brothers and her sisters-in-law, Carlo and Alice Valine and Jack and Mamie Valine; her sister, Rose Stubbs; sons, Maurice and Carl Fernandes, of Visalia; daughters, Geraldine (Gerry) Fernandes O’Day, of Morgan Hill, and Valerie Sullivan, of Garden Grove; grandchildren, Sean and Michele O’Day, Hans and Shelly O’Day Huisman, Dane Fernandes, Chad and Rachel Fernandes and Kylie Fernandes; and great-grandchildren, Mallary and Dakota O’Day and Kainoa and Malia Fernandes; and many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.
A graveside service for Mrs. Fernandes will be held at Old Tulare Cemetery, Blackstone Avenue, Tulare, on Monday, Nov. 3, at 1:30 p.m.
A gathering for family and friends will commence at the Agricenter following the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to a favorite charity.
Betty Jane Holmes
Betty Jane Holmes of Morgan Hill died Oct. 29, 2003, in San Jose after a long illness.
Betty was a real estate agent in the Morgan Hill/Gilroy area for many years.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bob; daughters Vicki Weller of Morgan Hill and Debbie Algieri of Santa Clara; son Robert of Pleasanton; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Betty's life will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. at Woodland Estates Clubhouse, 850 W. Middle Ave.
Maria Olivia Romero
Maria Olivia Romero died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003.
She is survived by her beloved children, Gabriel (Angie) Romero, Lorrain (Lee) Gallegos, Edward (Elba) Romero, Nancy (Leo) Iruegas, Esther (Jose) Esquivel, Julie (Phil) Rodriguez, Vickie (Troy) Romero. She was the grandmother of 20 and great-grandmother of 21.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 3 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 985 Barrett Ave., Morgan Hill.
Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
Frederick Cermeno
Frederick Cermeno, 83, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, in Gilroy after a short illness.
Mr. Cermeno lived in Morgan Hill and also Gilroy for the past 40 years. He was a native of Calexico, Mexico. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and fought in Africa and Europe with General Patton.
Mr. Cermeno was a sweet and loving husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed watching the Raiders, Oakland A's and boxing.
He is survived by his wife, Frances T. Cermeno of Morgan Hill; sons Richard F. Cermeno and his wife Sylvia of San Martin, James A. Cermeno of Gilroy, Ronald A. Cermeno and his wife Julie of Hollister; grandchildren Desiree, Selena, Sally Ann, James, Jr, Joseph, Jasmine, Justin, Ronald, Jr, Mercedes, Theresa and Wendy; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Marie Burnett; a brother; and three sisters.
Services have been held under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
