Ervine Xavier
Morgan Hill old-timers and others lucky enough to have known him will bid good-bye Saturday to Ervine Xavier (called “X” by his friends) at a memorial service. The service for Xavier, who died Feb. 25 in Yountville, will begin at 2 p.m. March 29 at Advent Lutheran Church, 16870 Murphy Ave. He will be buried later in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Xavier’s American flag will be raised by VFW friend Eddie Bowers Saturday morning and will fly over the Morgan Hill Veteran’s Memorial, Monterey Road at First Street, all day.
Xavier and his wife Ruth, who died in 1988 after the couple celebrated 44 years of marriage, had three children: Ervine Junior (Butch) who died in 1986, daughter Eyvonne who died at age 32 and Jim who is a captain with the Santa Clara County Fire Department, stationed in Morgan Hill.
Xavier is survived by Jim, Jim’s wife Jayne and daughters Elyssa and Eyvonne; Ervine Junior’s sons Cameron, Cory and Chad plus Cory’s son Logan; and by Eyvonne’s daughter Trudy and her daughters Julia and Rachael Sidener.
Jim Xavier invites his father’s friends to come to the service prepared to tell stories. Xavier was a person about whom there are many.
Norma L. Mosso
Norma Lenore Mosso died March 16, 2003, after a lengthy illness.
Mosso was born in Gilroy on Sept. 8, 1928, to Josephine and Peter Fravi (also natives of Gilroy). She was a stay-at-home mom and humanitarian who dedicated her life to her family - her husband, her children, grandchildren and their pets. She will be sorely missed and forever loved. She has left a legacy of love. May perpetual light shine upon her.
Norma is survived by her husband of 52 years, Albert Mosso; children Vernon Mosso of Santa Cruz, Larry Mosso of Hollister, Janis McAfee of Hollister and Ellen Clark of Gilroy; grandchildren Clinton Mosso, Sarah Mosso, Paul Mosso, Ronald McAfee III, Connor Clark and Tara Clark; niece, Karen Sergi (whom Norma considered her daughter); and nephews Ken Sergi and Jim Sergi.
She was preceded in death by her sister Kathleen Sergi and dear niece Janet Sergi.
Burial was at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park in Gilroy under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.
Patricia “Granny” R. Cabral
Patricia “Granny” R. Cabral died March 23, 2003, in Morgan Hill after a lengthy illness. A former San Jose resident, she was born Dec. 28, 1915, in Oklahoma.
Patricia enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughter Joyce Anderson of Morgan Hill; grandson James Devincenzi of Salinas; granddaughters Deborah Segura of Salinas, Shannon Plaster and Michelle Larson, both of Oklahoma; and numerous great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederich Cabral, and her son Donald Wann.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 27, at the Johnson Funeral Home.
Interment will follow at Oakhill Memorial Park in San Jose.
Gabriel R. Corona Sr.
Gabriel R. Corona Sr., 46, died March 18, 2003, in Modesto
Gabriel attended Gilroy Schools and worked for 17 years at Gilroy Foods as a fork-lift driver. He loved his Harley-Davidson and enjoyed working on it. He was a native of San Jose.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian Corona, of Gilroy; son and his wife Gabriel Jr. and Juliann Corona of Gilroy; son and his fiancé Jason Corona and Sophia Razo of Gilroy; mother and her husband Margie and Henry Polanco of Morgan Hill; brother Manuel Corona of San Jose; sister and her husband Abby and David Lujan of Gilroy; sisters Olivia Corona and Helen Corona, both of Gilroy; brother David Corona of Gilroy; grandchildren Amanda Corona of Gilroy, Adrian Corona and Adrianna Corona, all of Gilroy; and many nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his father Manuel Corona and his sister Jennie Cavazos.
Vigil Service is at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Funeral Service is Monday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial following at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.
Vince Marquez Sr.
Vince Marquez Sr. died March 24, 2003, in Salinas. He was 68.
Born in Roswell, N.M., on Feb. 28, 1935, he relocated to Morgan Hill in 1948, picking strawberries for several years on what is now Cochrane Road.
He married his wife, Rosie, in 1959 and settled in Gilroy, where they raised five children. Vince drove trucks for 43 years, 29 of those years were for Highway Garage and 14 years were for McAbee Trucking. He moved to Hollister in 1972.
He is survived by sons Joey Marquez Chavez and wife Linda of Gilroy, Vince Marquez Jr. and wife Yani of Visalia and Miles Marquez of Hollister; daughters Martha Arellano and husband Raul, Stephanie Garcia and husband Jose and Valerie Marquez, all of Visali; siblings Paul and Mickey Marquez of Vallejo, Bobby Marquez of San Jose, Hope Marquez of Manteca, Lupe and Jesse Martinez of San Jose and Lucy Marquez of Hollister; 17 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, friends; and a very special friend Cuco Salgado of Gilroy.
He was preceded in death by his parents Pablo and Petra Marquez; sisters Angie Martinez and Helen Marquez; and granddaughter Lorraine Chavez.
Friends are invited to attend Vigil Service at 6 tonight, March 28, at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. Visitation will start at 2 p.m. today.
Funeral services will start Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home then to St. Mary Church for Funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
Dolores Garcia Jordan
Dolores Garcia Jordan died March 26, 2003, at home with her loving family present.
Mrs. Jordan was born in Gilroy 73 years ago. She attended Gilroy, San Martin and Morgan Hill schools, graduating from Gilroy High School in 1948. Dolores was the daughter of John and Rose Garcia, a pioneer Gilroy family; her father was born in Gilroy in 1903.
For many years Mrs. Jordan sang in the South Valley Choir, having acquired her musical ability from her mother Rose Bonfante Garcia, who played piano and sang. Mrs. Jordan also played the piano, the ukulele and the “washtub”. Dolores was an avid gardener and was also a wonderful cook. She took great pride in her home.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Merle Jordan of Morgan Hill; brother John D. Garcia of Gilroy; sisters-in-law Cleo Pirrone of Modesto, Sandy Garcia of Goldfield, Nev., Faye Gorges of Cupertino and Irene Barbaglia of Watsonville; brother-in-law Larry Hail of Pinole; nieces and nephews Little Irene of Hayward, Joanne McCall of Cupertino, Kenny Gorges of Lincoln, Sylvia of Colorado, Carol Perry of Cottage Grove, Ore., Jeannie Wilkins of Pacific Grove, Linda Benito of Watsonville, Bobby Jordan of Medford, Oregon, Judy McKissack of Antioch, Nancy Robinson of Hollywood, Christie Harrison of Concord, Larry Hail of Reno, Nev., John D. Garcia Jr. of Gilroy, Daniel Garcia of Gilroy, Dennis Garcia of Stockton, Michael Garcia of San Jose, Paul Garcia of San Jose, Philip Garcia of San Jose, David Garcia of San Jose; and many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Garcia.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to a favorite hospice program.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at St. Mary Church in Gilroy. Arrangements were under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
Ruth E. McCann
Ruth E. McCann died March 25, 2003, at her home in Morgan Hill. She was 86.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Huber and her husband Rick; son Larry McCann; brother Ronald Stephens of Morgan Hill; grandchildren Stacy Doucet, Corina Rapanut, Danielle Huber, Sean McCann, Samantha Brown, Brian Smith, Missy McAllister Jerad McCann and Shawn Wasington; and great grandchildren Alexis Eldora Pennington, Trenton McCann, Tyler Brown and Kylie Brown.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Reuben.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 31, at Johnson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
