Mark Millerd Burd

Mark Millerd Burd died May 4, 2005, with his family at his side after a courageous 17-month battle with cancer.

Mark was born June 27, 1937, in Natrona, Penn. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy and spent four years in various Mediterranean ports. After leaving the Navy, Mark joined IBM in Fishgill, N.Y., and eventually moved to San Jose to work at the Cottle Road IBM facility. After 34 years at IBM, Mark retired to enjoy golf, spending time with his family and delighting children with train rides at the San Martin Pumpkin Patch.

Mark and Connie moved from San Jose to Morgan Hill in 1977.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years Connie Burd; daughters Stacey Burd of San Jose; Stephanie (Burd) Corcoran and son-in-law Ryan Corcoran of Menlo Park; son Scott Burd of Morgan Hill; sisters Connie Persun of Murrysville, Penn., and Marcy Wilson of Apollo, Penn.; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of Mark’s life at 3pm today, May 14, at 3pm at the home of Connie Burd.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Amy L. Boehme

Amy L. Boehme died May 15, 2005, at Santa Teresa Hospital in San Jose. She was 74.

Born in Superior, Wisc., she and her husband, John Boehme, were married in Duluth, Minn., in 1953. They moved to Gilroy from Duluth more than 40 years ago. She and her husband owned and operated A&J Machine Shop in Morgan Hill for nearly 30 years.

She is survived by her husband, John Boehme of Gilroy; children Frank Briar of Virginia, Amy Crouse of Gilroy, Maryann Penyacsek of Gilroy and Timothy John Boehme of Newark; brothers and sister, Henry Burgraff of Iowa, Calvin Burgraff of Wisconsin and Doris Correlle of Superior, Wisc.; grandchildren Jacqueline Penyacsek, Jeannette Penyacsek, Michael Penyacsek, Matthew Penyacsek and Mark Penyacsek; and great-grandchildren Ava Caudillo, Athena Reyna and R.J. Mooney.

Interment was May 19, Calvary Cemetery in Hollister.

Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home in Hollister handled arrangements.

Victor W. Berri

Victor W. Berri died Friday, May 13, 2005, at the age of 83.

He loved to hunt and fish. He worked a mechanic and supervisor for 42 years with the F & P and ACC Canneries.

He is survived by his former wife, Genevieve A. Berri of Gilroy; son Kenneth Berri of Gilroy; grandchildren Scott K. Berri of Gilroy and Michelle Clabell of Hollister; godson, David Crocker of Gilroy; nephew and nieces, Gary Rocchi of Gilroy, Jerry Rocchi of Gilroy, Allan Crocker of Mason,  Texas, Richard Pratt of Reno, Nev., Carol Fellom of Gilroy, Glenda Overbay of Oregon, Wendy Delgado of Goodyear, Ariz., Darlene Lanning of San Jose and Irene Sanches of San Jose; and cousins Lillian Crocker of Gilroy, Elsie Aliciti of Morgan Hill, Mary Borgini of Greenfield, Lena Borgini of Greenfield, Jim Luchessa of Soledad, Herman Luchessa of Soledad and Jane Soares of Watsonville.

Donations may be made to the Veterans Flag Memorial the VFW Ladys Aux Post 6309 or American Cancer Fund.

Memorial services will be held at 2pm Sunday, May 22, at 610 E. 8th St., Gilroy.

Services are under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

Gregory Dino Garcia

Gregory Dino Garcia died May 12, 2005, in Gilroy after a sudden illness. A native of Gilroy, he was 38.

Dino is survived by his children Alexandria and Shawnte Garcia; their mother Sharon Furtado; parents Gil and Gloria Garcia; siblings Ruby and her husband Dale Jeske, Gina and her husband Art Salgado, Troy Garcia, Michelle and husband John Adams; and many aunts, uncles, cousin and friends.

He was the uncle of Jennifer Hernandez, Stephanie Garcia Jeske, Brittney Jeske, Jonathon Hernandez, Kayla Garcia and great-uncle of Christian and Hailey Ledesma.

Greg attended Gilroy schools, was very active in the community softball league, coached Little League baseball and the CHAOS softball traveling team, loved golf and the Raiders football. Dino volunteered with the John Bisceglie theater arts program in which both of his daughters performed.

Funeral Mass was May 17at St. Mary’s Church. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Joe Luis Fausto

Joe Luis Fausto “Pelon” born Sept.12, 1959, in San Jose, died May 11, 2005, in Gilroy. He is the brother of Ray and Gloria Aguilar of Gilroy, Alfonsa Aguilar of Gilroy, Joe and Nancy Aguilar of Gilroy, Cruz and Marcella Fausto of San Martin, Jesse Fausto of Sacramento, Lupe Fausto and Abraham Rosado of Gilroy, Micaela Fausto II of Gilroy and Mario Fausto of Gilroy; uncle of Veronica Rodriguez and Paulo Sergio Reis Jr. “Tootsie” of Gilroy; and many other nephews and nieces.

Joe was a coach for softball and baseball and played in city league softball and basketball. He loved to barbecue and joke with the family, loved family gatherings and loved his nephew Paulo Sergio Reis Jr. “Tootsie” like the son he never had.

Services were May 17 at Habing Family Funeral Home with Funeral Mass at 10:30am at St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.

Joanna Marie Avalli

Joanna Marie Avalli died May 5, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 62.

Joanna passed away peacefully at her home overlooking her yard, where her grandchildren were playing.

She was the daughter of Fred and Mary Avalli; the sister of Mario, Fred and the late Louis Avalli; the mother of Gina, Tom and Michael Annotti; the grandmother of Bianca, Sophia, Dante, Mateo, Vito and Angelo. She was born and raised in Hollister; attended local schools and graduated from Palma High School and the College of Notre Dame, Belmont.

Joanna was a sixth-grade teacher at Maze Middle School in Hollister, where her passion was teaching the second language learners and helping them achieve and master the English language. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and gambling.

“She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, teacher and friend,” her family said.

Funeral Mass was May 13 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hollister.

The family asks that any donations be made to the Sacred Heart Parish School c/o Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home, 870 San Benito St., Hollister.

Mark Kennedy

Mark Kennedy died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, in Gilroy. He was 81.

Mr. Kennedy attended Santa Clara University until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He served as a bombardier in a B-24 squadron in the 15th Air Force. He came home to San Jose in 1944 and married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne Fischer. They moved to Gilroy in 1945 where Mark joined his father, Ed Kennedy, in the ownership of Gilroy Lumber Company.

Later in life, he lost his wife to cancer. He was remarried to a close high school friend, Phyllis Mortenson, with whom he spent happy times until her death in 1999. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Elks Lodge, American Legion Post 669 and the California Waterfowl Association. He also served on the Gilroy Planning Commission, the Gilroy City Council, and the Wheeler Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees.

He is survived by his sister, Harriet Abel of Merced; children and their spouses, Mike and Sherrie Kennedy of Gilroy, Christine and Paul Wheeler of Gilroy and Elizabeth and Mohammed Doroud of San Andreas; and grandchildren, Todd Kennedy of Phoenix and Mark and Carly Kennedy of Gilroy, Steve and his wife Julie Wheeler of Los Altos, Leslie Wheeler of Gilroy, and Mari and Shalley Doroud of San Andreas.

Memorial services will be held at 11am Tuesday, May 24, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to any of the following organizations: Santa Clara University, American Cancer Society, California Waterfowl Association or a favorite charity.
