Mary Sambrano Diaz
Mary Sambrano Diaz was born Sept. 25, 1946, in Texas, and died Jan. 27, 2005.
Mary lived her whole life in the Morgan Hill and Gilroy areas. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her mother Magdalena Hernandez; fiancé Juan Gonzalez; brothers and sisters Joe, Nena, Philip, Alfred, Isabel, Carlos, Albino, Inez and Ramon; children James Duran, Pete Regalado and Monica Lepik; grandchildren Heather, James Jr., Monique, James, Jesse Duran, Jonathan, Angel and Peter Regalado, Jasmine, Julia and Alyssa Lepik. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services take place from 1-3pm Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Johnson Funeral Home.
Frank V. Days Jr.
Frank V. Days Jr., 65, died Jan. 17, 2005, of a heart attack in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Frank was born on Dec. 5, 1939, in San Jose. He was the only son of Frank and Virginia Days. The family moved to Morgan Hill in 1947 where Frank attended elementary, middle and high school. He graduated from Live Oak in 1957. He attended Hartnell Jr. College in Salinas for one year, then joined the Navy. He was stationed in several locations but it was when serving in ”Operation Deep Freeze” in Antarctica that he met his wife, Ann. While on furlough in New Zealand, they met on a blind date, fell in love and were happily married until his passing. They lived in San Jose until 1969 when they moved to Christchurch to be with their three boys. Frank worked and was retired from New Zealand Airlines.
Frank loved sports and remained a staunch football fan. He was an avid golfer and loved to travel. He will be missed by all his family and he will be remembered for his winning smile and keen sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife Ann (New Zealand); sons Frank III, Robert and Steven; daughters-in-law Michelle and Kathy; grandchildren Jessica, Oscar, Mia and Josh (Australia); mother Virginia B. Days (Morgan Hill); sisters Barbara Schiermeyer (Alturas), Virginia M. Days (Morgan Hill), Dolores Cruz (San Jose), Jackie Bauleke (Placerville) and Betty Days (Fortuna); brother-in-law Manuel Cruz; many nieces and nephews; in-laws in New Zealand and many aunts and cousins and friends in New Zealand, the United States, Germany and Bermuda.
He was preceded in death by his father Frank V. Days Sr.
Services took place Friday, Jan. 21 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Kathryn ‘Katy’ Tamura
Kathyrn “Katy” Mary Tamura died Feb. 13, 2003, at Stanford Hospital where she was awaiting a liver transplant.
Born in 1960 in San Francisco, Tamura attended Valley Christian High School and graduated from Azusa Pacific University. She was a beloved teacher in the community - at Valley Christian Academy, Pacific West Christian Academy and Morgan Hill Country School - for 20 years.
Katy was a wife, mother, teacher and dear friend. She had a love of people, especially children, which made everyone in her presence feel special. Katy will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her and loved her.
She is survived by her loving husband, Irving; children Kiersten and Parker; stepchildren Jason and Ronnie; parents Ronald and Virginia Lyson; sister Betsy; brothers Ben and Joseph and Mark. She also is survived by her life long friend Tammy Vickroy.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at South Valley Community Church, 8095 Kelton Drive, Gilroy.
After the service a barbecue will take place in the auditorium at Morgan Hill Country School, 104 John Wilson Way, off Monterey Road, in Morgan Hill.
Those who wish are invited to take a side dish or dessert, to add to the barbecue.
Also, in honor of Katy's personal “trademark” those who wish are asked to slip a number two pencil behind their right ear to honor Katy’s contribution to the community and her friends.
A trust fund has been established at Wells Fargo Bank, 17590 S. Monterey Road, Morgan Hill, 95037 in the names of Kiersten and Parker Tamura.

Daniel Wolford LaRue
Daniel Wolford LaRue 3d died Feb. 7, 2003, in his home at the Villages in San Jose. He was 94.
LaRue was born in Middletown, N.Y., Nov. 13, 1908, to Daniel Wolford LaRue II, an educator and author, and Mabel Guinnip LaRue, a well known author of children's books.
Mr. LaRue attended school in East Stroudsburg, Penn., and played on the baseball team, graduated from Harvard in 1930 and then Harvard Business School. He loved playing baseball, tracking the stock market and writing wonderfully informative letters. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Mr. LaRue then made a career working for Henry Ford II at the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Mich. as manager of the Property Management Department. Locally, during his tenure at Ford he was responsible for acquiring the site for the San Jose assembly plant. Mr. LaRue divided his time between his homes in Birmingham, Mich., and Crystal River, Fla. After retirement and his marriage to Mildred Wharton in 1981, he enjoyed traveling several times each year, in their Ford automobile, between San Jose and Crystal River. Everyone who knew him will miss his loving smile and crisp sense of humor.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mildred Holloway Wharton LaRue; cousins Dorothy and Jeanne Wall; sisters-in-law Garnet Miller (Dr. Samuel) and Marguerite Hoerl; nieces and nephews Margie, Sam, John and David Miller, Katie Boddie, Vicki Morris, and David, Brian, Scott and Roger Hoerl; stepchildren Louise Wharton Roebuck (Tom), Janie Knopf (Roger), Mary Helene Tietz (Ken), Mike Wharton (Lea) and Joe Wharton (Kathy); stepgrandchildren: Mark Wharton (Michele), Stacey Wharton, Valerie Constant (Mark), David Knopf (Gina), Carrie Knopf, Cindy Padden (Tom), Emily Minow (Brian), Ashley Holm (Josh), Tim Wharton (Amy), Steve Wharton, Andrew Wharton; and 13 stepgreat grandchildren. He also is survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mr. LaRue was preceded in death by his first wife Gwendolyn Field LaRue, and stepson Christopher Holloway Wharton.
As he wished, there will be no service. Inurnment will proceed in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg, Penn.
The family asks that any donations be made to a favorite charity. Arrangements were made by Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy.
Vera Bosse
Vera Bosse died at her home on Feb. 10, 2003, with her family at her side, after a long fought battle with cancer.
Born August 1, 1948, in Chicago, Ill. Bosse was a licensed vocational nurse since 1986. Vera was a resident of Gilroy. She was a former resident of Newbury Park and Wrentham, Mass.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Gene Bosse; son Jon Bosse; and sister Nancy Allen-Jacobsen.
Funeral services will be held on at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Advent Lutheran Church.
Arrangement were under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
Judith Ann Hale Schmelzenbach
Judith Ann “Judy” Hale Schmelzenbach died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, in Austin, Texas. She was 72.
Judy was the second of three daughters born to M.P. “Skipper” and Laura Hale in Morgan Hill. She attended local schools and San Jose State University. She then worked for several years at United Air Lines in San Francisco. After raising her five children, she returned to school and earned her nursing degree, and became an operating room nurse. She was very creative, musical and artistic.
She loved to travel and was especially fond of sailing. That love of sailing took her to Antigua, home of the Antigua Yacht Race, where she remained for the last 15 years. She sailed twice across the Atlantic as a crew member, one of which was a National Geographic study cruise. While in Antigua, she developed and marketed a line of Antigua hot sauces and chutneys, and other bottled products. She sang with the Tree Frog Chorus, a local choral. She was a member of the American Women’s Club, a volunteer at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Center for Drug Rehabilitation, and active in Race Week activities.
She was the mother of Jamie Hiott of Morgan Hill, Heidi Grover of Boise, Idaho; Katie Miller of Columbia, S.C.; Konnie Hart of Austin, Texas; and Mark Schmelzenbach; grandmother of Annie Nikum of Missouri; Shannon and Lana Hiott of Morgan Hill; Harrison and Dalton Grover of Boise; Caleb, Maggie, Valerie and Mark Miller of Columbia; and Natasha Hart of Austin; and beloved sister of Joan Price of Friday Harbor, Wash., and Mary Malech of Morgan Hill. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ford, and her son Mark.
At her request, Judy will be cremated, and her ashes taken to McCall, Idaho, to be buried with her son.
