James P. McEntee Sr.
James P. McEntee Sr. died Sept. 13, 2004, in Santa Barbara. He was 73.
McEntee served as parish priest at St. Catherine’s Church in the late 60s.
Friends and co-workers described him as a spirited advocate for social justice. He was a human being who modeled compassion and human kindness and left a world that was better than the one he found, because throughout his life, he worked to make it so.
People from all walks of life respected him. He had a talent for bringing people together. McEntee had a long history of building bridges between communities, bringing programs and services to the people in Santa Clara County. He is a founding member of the Confederation de la Raza Unida, founding chairman of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara County, a founding member of the Emergency Housing Consortium and the Help House the Homeless Coalition. McEntee urged the county to open up its armories in the late 1980s to temporarily house the homeless during winter, a program that continues to this day.
McEntee, fluent in Spanish, also worked very closely with the United Farm Workers of America beginning 1965. From 1962-65, McEntee served as executive director of the Latin American Mission Program in San Francisco. He also served as executive director of Voluntary Action Center of Santa Clara County from 1973-76.
McEntee was hired by Santa Clara County in 1976 as the director of the Human Relations Commission, and later served as manager of the Office of Human Relations until his retirement in 2003. He retired in July 2003 after 27 years of service. Consistent with his approach to life, to celebrate his retirement, he hosted a picnic for colleagues and friends to enjoy.
Prior to entering the world of secular public service, McEntee served as a Roman Catholic priest including service as associate pastor at St. Catherine’s Church and at Saint Louis Bertrand Church in Oakland.
McEntee was born in Oakland. He was a lifelong resident of the Bay Area and a resident of Santa Clara County for 38 years. He was involved in church, civil and community activities.
He was married to Ann McEntee, a true partner for social justice and a teacher, and reared with her a large multi-cultural family. Aside from his wife, he is survived by his two birth children Amy and Peter, six adopted children, and served as foster parent to a ninth child. He also is survived by 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers.
A multicultural and multi-faith prayer and visitation service took place Thursday at St. John Vianney Church, 4601 Hyland Ave., San Jose.
Funeral Mass was Friday, Sept. 17, at the church. Internment was at Calvary Cemetery.

Donald L. Burgoyne
Donald L. Burgoyne died Jan. 18, 2003. He was 80.
Born October 12, 1922, in Ida Grove, Iowa, Don served as a medical corpsman in World War II. He earned his master’s degree from Iowa Universiy in plant physiology. He worked for DuPont Agrichemical Division for 35 years.
A devoted family man and friend to many, Don loved to dance. He was an avid golfer and swimmer and loved Dixieland Jazz. He was also a volunteer at Kaiser Santa Teresa Hospital.
He is survived by his sisters Virginia Brockman and Marie Stookey; son Douglas and his family of Los Angeles; daughter Leah Dowty of Santa Cruz; grandchildren Kyle Burgoyne and Mariete Dowty; niece Denise Burgoyne; and nephew Michael Burgoyne and his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Margene Burgoyne.
Services were held today at Gilroy Presbyterian Church.

Edwin Goehring
Edwin C. Goehring died Jan. 9, 2003, in San Jose
He is survived by his wife, Joy Goehring, of Gilroy and many other loving family members. Mr. Goehring was a retried Cement Mason and rancher.
At his request no service will be held. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home at Gavilan Hills Crematory.
The family respectfully requests that, those who wish, make donations to the St. Francis of Assisi Animal Rescue, Morgan Hill.
Takeo Sakahara
Takeo Sakahara died Jan. 7 in Gilroy Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 89 years.
Born and raised in the Fresno area, he moved to San Jose in 1949, then to Gilroy in 1953. He was a long-time farmer in the Gilroy area growing strawberries, prunes and cucumbers. He also worked as a custodian for the Gilroy Unified School District. He was a longtime member of the San Jose Betsuin.
Sakahara was the father of Alice Sakahara of Gilroy, William (Janet) Sakahara of Mission Viejo, Gene (Kathryn) Sakahara of Gilroy and Dale Sakahara of Great Mills, Maryland; grandfather of Kristin Cummings of Las Vegas, Nev., Robin Sakahara of Berkeley, Karin Kashima of Mission Viejo, Gena Sakahara of Gilroy and Timothy Sakahara of Medford, Oregon; and great-grandfather of Kaitlin Cummings of Las Vegas. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first two wives, Tsuyako and Maseko and is survived by his current wife, Mary. He was also preceded by brothers, Kiyoshi, Shigenobu, Shigeto (Frank), Matsukichi and one sister Haruko.
Buddhist Funeral Services were Jan. 11 at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.

Marshall Bernal
Marshall Bert Bernal died Jan. 16, 2003.
Bernal was born Jan. 16, 1903, to Louis Bernal and Rufina Velasco Bernal at Hall’s Valley. He was born at the Rancho Canada de Pala, which is now the Grant Ranch County Park. His family moved to San Jose shortly thereafter.
Mr. Bernal was a retired rancher having lived more than 50 years in Morgan Hill. He had also worked about 30 years for the Pacific Manufacturing Co. in Santa Clara and for 10 years for Stokley Van Camp in Santa Clara.
Mr. Bernal was married in 1936 and is survived by his wife, Mary; sons Michael and Mark and their wives Brenda and Nancy; his grandsons Brian, Marshall and Martin; and his granddaughter Angella.
A memorial service will be held “when the ground is dry and the sun is warm”.

Tony Bonino
Tony Bonino died September 26, 2004 at his home.
Bonino was born 96 years ago in Homeboy, Bingham Canyon, Utah. He was a longtime rancher in the San Martin area, growing pru-nes, grapes, pears and walnuts. He was a member of the Sunsweet and CalCan co-ops. He also enjoyed deer hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Bonino of San Martin; children Donald and wife Lynne Bonino, Louie and wife Judy Bonino and Elaine Bonino, all of San Martin; grandchildren Donna and husband Daren Augustin of Stockton, Randy and wife Lori Bonino, Russell and wife Raquel and Brent Bonino, all of San Martin; great-grandchildren Anthony and Jeremy Bonino of San Martin, Cameron and Gavan Augustin of Stockton and Jennifer, Nicole and Thomas Bonino of San Martin.
He also is survived by his sister Jennie Costa of Coyote; nephew Roger Costa of San Jose; nieces Janet Hebert of San Jose and Anita Sciutto of Capitola; and sister-in-law Mamie Sgheiza of Gilroy.
A visitation will be 4-8pm Wednesday at the Habing Family Funeral Home with the family present from 6-7pm. Funeral services will be at 11am Thursday at the mortuary chapel. Entombment will follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.
