Baleriana Oyao

Baleriana Oyao died July 18, 2004, at her Gilroy home. She was 102.

Born on June 2, 1902, Mrs. Oyao was originally from Siquijor, a small island in the Philippines. Mrs. Oyao moved to Hawaii with her sister when she was 18. Looking for work, they found employment at plantations that grew pineapples and sugar cane. While in Hawaii, she met the man who would become her husband. Together, they worked in Hawaii for a few months before moving to San Francisco. Later, the Oyaos moved to Salinas to be with other Filipino families. There, both Oyao and her husband worked in fields up and down California’s Central Coast. After about seven years in the Salinas area, the Oyaos moved to Gilroy.

She lived in different houses before moving to her current Seventh Street place in 1964, which is also the site where Gilroy hopes to put its new arts center.

Mrs. Oyao was a member of Fil-Visayan Association of America. She loved to gamble in Reno, loved animals, especially her cats and dogs and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. Late into her life she was still looking for a party.

She is survived by her children Frank and his wife Brunie Oyao of San Jose, Arcenio and his wife Julie Oyao of Daly City, Chefela Hammett of El Sobrante, Benjamin and his wife Josie Oyao of Elk Grove; grandchildren Francisco Jr., Don, Mark, Tim, Shawn, Troy, Darren, Derrek, Richard, Kirk, Jennifer, Philip and Sheldon; great-grandchildren Mirabai, Kumara, Arriana, Timmy, Drake, Elizabeth, Damien, Jaclynn, Jasmine, Jenei, Alfonso, Trevor, Shanae and Kaikoa.

Visitation starts at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy with Vigil Service beginning at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at the funeral home, then proceed to St. Mary Church for Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.

Raymond “Mundo” Salgado

Raymond “Mundo” Salgado of Gilroy died July 16, 2004, in Los Gatos. He was 71.

Mundo was an avid baseball fan, enjoyed watching his kids play softball and watching the 49ers, he also enjoyed fishing and raising canaries. He was a great storyteller.

He was the beloved husband of Jennie Salgado of Gilroy; loving father of George and his wife Linda Salgado, Art and his wife Gina Salgado, Eddie and his wife Maria Esther Salgado, Ronnie and his wife Rosie Salgado, Donnie Salgado, Andrew and his wife Lupe Salgado, Kathy Salgado, Alex and his wife Geneva Salgado, and Johnny and his wife Lori Salgado, all of Gilroy; grandfather of 38; great-grandfather of 32; brother of Rudy and his wife Pat Salgado of Gilroy, Chavella and her husband Danny Lozano of San Jose, Rosie Perez of Santa Paula and Ramiro Salgado of Gilroy.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Sandra Salgado; parents Luciano and Ruth Salgado; and brother Refugio Salgado.

Visitation will take place from 1-5 p.m. Thursday, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. at the mortuary. Services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 23, at the mortuary, followed by Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.

Noreen Adele Olson Johnson

Noreen Adele Olson Johnson, born March 18, 1939, died June 27, 2004, in Morgan Hill. She was 65.

Noreen was loved by all who knew her and she will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her children Robert and Alice Johnson; grandchildren Travis, Jessica and Jason Johnson; and dear friends Nancy Ackerman and Karen Robinson.

Private cremation was under the direction of  Johnson Funeral Home.

Anthony V. Nieblas

Anthony V. “Tony” Nieblas died July 15, 2004, at the Veteran's Hospital in Palo Alto. He was 76.

A native of Mexico, Mr. Nieblas moved to Morgan Hill in 1967. He enjoyed his family and they meant the world to him. He enjoyed restoring classic cars and was being a member of the Maserati Club of Carmel.

He was the loving father of Gloria Landeros and Vince Landeros of Gilroy, Yolanda and Tony Alanis of San Jose, Anthony and Margaret Nieblas of Morgan Hill, Danny Nieblas of San Jose, Sally and Jim Alanis of Gilroy, Jessie Nieblas of Morgan Hill, Cindy and Ed Garcia of San Martin, Ruby and Nick Hernandez of Gilroy, Josie and Robert Mendez of Gilroy, Lisa and Ed Foster of Gilroy, Richard Nieblas of Morgan Hill; grandfather of 33; great-grandfather of 18. He also is survived by three sisters and four brothers in Southern California, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife Arcelia Nieblas, who died Jan. 8; and son Robert Nieblas, who died in 1977.

Vigil Service take places at 7 tonight, July 20, at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy. The Services begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the mortuary followed by Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.

Alvin Howard Baird

Alvin Howard Baird, a fourth generation Californian, died in Madrone on Friday, January 10, 2003.

Al, as he was known, was born June 10, 1953, in Gilroy to Harold and Barbara Baird. He attended local grammar schools and graduated from Live Oak High School in 1971 and then CalPoly San Luis Obispo.

He enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, horseback riding and reading. Al recently retired, due to health problems, from CB Tool and Supply in San Jose where he was a machinist.

Besides his two grieving cats, Al leaves behind his parents Harold and Barbara of Madrone; siblings Sally Miller of Mt. Hamilton, Joann Baird, Janet Burback and Johne Baird all of Madrone; and nieces and nephews Megan and Kacie Miller of Mt Hamilton,  Taylor and Thomas Burback and Steven Baird, all of Madrone.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother Lilie Tilton Sheldon.

As per his wishes, arrangements were made for cremation with private services. Contributions can be made to a favorite charity.

Janice M. Loek

Janice M. Loek, 70, died Friday, June 25, 2004, at her residence.

She was born on April 17, 1934, in North Dakota. Formerly a resident of San Jose and Morgan Hill, Janice lived in Manteca for the last seven years. She loved calling bingo at the Manteca Senior Center. Janice and her husband, Barney, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February with friends and family, followed by a trip to Hawaii.

Mrs. Loek is survived by her husband, Byron “Barney” Loek of Manteca; children Debra, Randy, Diane (McBee), Rick and Wendy; sisters Beverly and Mary Lee; brother Gary; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held in Gilroy on Aug. 1. Call Diane 408-846-6240 or Rick 408-314-8252 for details.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that any donations be made to the Hospice of San Joaquin County, 2609 E. Hammer Lane, Stockton, CA 95210 PH: 209-957-3888.

Gabe Losada

Gabe Losada died at his home in San Martin, Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the age of 81.

Mr. Losada was born and raised in Gilroy and graduated from Gilroy High School in 1941. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. After the war he moved back to Gilroy working for Montgomery Ward in the mens' clothing, where he met his future wife, Virginia. He later built, then moved to his home of 52 years in San Martin. He worked as a construction painter, but his passion was working in his orchard and vegetable garden. He was a member of St. Catherine's Church in Morgan Hill, Gilroy Veteran's of Foreign Wars and Small Towner's. Gabe was active in high school sports and his love of sports continued throughout his life.

He was the loving father of Judy Thome of Gilroy, Patti Gillette, and her husband, Steve of Portland, Ore., and Lisa Burnell, and her husband, Colby; dear grandfather of Brian and Kevin Thome of Gilroy, Melanie and Michael Gillette of Portland and Alex McCreddin of Morgan Hill. Dearest companion and friend of Johanna Tacci of Morgan Hill. He also is survived by brother and sister in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by Virginia, his wife of 48 years; parents, Pedro and Lucia Losada; and his brothers, John and Fernie Losada.

Virginia, his wife of 48 years, preceded him in death in 1995.

The Vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy. Funeral Services will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the funeral home, then will proceed to St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Morgan Hill for Mass at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Gilroy.

The family asks that any be made to a favorite charity.
