Isabel “Mickie” Martinez
Isabel “Mickie” Martinez died April 19, 2004. She was 52.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at the Chapel of the Oaks, San Jose. Funeral arrangements are by Oak Hill Funeral Home, San Jose.
Bob Fischer
Bob Fischer, 61, died April 23, 2004, from complications after hip replacement surgery. He was the beloved husband of Sorell Fischer and father of Blake and Lindsey Fischer.
Bob was a teacher, counselor, assistant principal and principal in the Los Angeles Unified School District until 1979. He then became principal at Central High School in Morgan Hill. Known simply as “Fish” around school, his passion was helping students believe in themselves. He was honored as the California Continuation Education Association “Teacher of the Year.” After he retired from education in 1996, Bob joined his wife in private business providing leadership and management training.
As a Rotarian, Bob helped to serve the Morgan Hill community. In the organization he held a variety of positions including president, and was known for his great sense of humor and his sunny personality. He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and served as an ambassador for the San Jose Chamber of Commerce for many years.
Friends and family are welcome to attend a memorial service in his honor at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road, at noon Friday, May 7.
A scholarship fund for Central High School students is being set up in Bob Fischer’s name. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to: Morgan Hill Rotary Endowment, P.O. Box 283, Morgan Hill, CA 95038
George Cavinta Sr.
George Cavinta Sr. died peacefully at home on April 26, 2004, in San Martin. He was 94.
He was born on April 10, 1910, in Aringay, La Union, Philippines. George immigrated to the United States when he was 19. He was a longtime chef before retiring in 1972. George enjoyed gardening, raising pigs, fishing, going to horse races, watching wrestling and boxing, and going to Reno. He was kind and generous to everyone he knew and brought smiles and laughter to all those around him.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lucena Cavinta of San Martin; sons George (Diana) Cavinta Jr. of Arcata, Joel Cavinta of Morgan Hill and Gene Cavinta of Morgan Hill; daughters Donadina (Ernie) Domingo of Eureka, Frances Rooney of Fremont and Lolita Cavinta of Sacramento; stepsons Arnold Alegre of San Martin and Rolando Cuaresma of Stafford, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation and Vigil Service take place Sunday, May 2, with Vigil starting at 5 p.m. and visitation 4-8 p.m., at Johnson Funeral Home.
Funeral services take place at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 3, at St. Catherine’s Church.
Betty G. Shoreen
Betty Gordon Shoreen died April 17, 2004, in Auburn.
Betty was born on Oct. 9, 1924. A registered nurse, she lived most of her life in the Bay Area. Betty and her husband, Earl, retired in Morgan Hill, and lived here a number of years.
Earl Shoreen preceded her in death.
Kenneth James Bosworth
Kenneth James Bosworth, 19, of Aromas, died Jan. 1, 2003, in Gilroy as a result of an auto accident.
Bosworth was born in Placerville on April 13, 1983. He attended Fremont Grammar School in Hollister, San Benito High School, Anzar High School and San Andreas High School. He played basketball, water polo, loved to surf and skate board. He played on the water polo team for San Benito High School. He was studying to become a psychologist. He taught swimming lessons to those with disabilities. Family members said that he had strong goals to help those in need.
He is survived by his grandparents Ardis Bosworth of Placerville, Cliff and Alma Meyer of Citrus Heights and Don Roach of Fort Thomas, Ariz.; parents, James and Kathleen Bosworth of Aromas; sisters Andrea Roach of Walnut Creek and Kimberly Bosworth of Gilroy; and twin sister Jennifer Bosworth of Gilroy.
A memorial service took place Jan. 4 at Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home, 870 San Benito St., Hollister. Private cremation has been held and private interment was Sunday at Placerville Union Cemetery, Placerville.
The family asks that any donations be made to San Benito High School Boys Water Polo Boosters Club Foundation in care of Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home.
Margaret B. O'Connor
Margaret “Peggy” B. O’Connor died Wednesday, Jan. 1, in Morgan Hill. She was 76.
A native of New York, Peggy, moved to San Jose in 1972. She was past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus in Uniondale, N.Y. During her time in California she worked as an executive secretary at Fairchild Semiconductor and Weitek Semiconductor. In her retirement she was a docent at the San Jose Historical Museum and at the Ainsley House in Campbell. She was also a member of the St. Basil’s Couples Club and the Hospitality Club at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church in Campbell.
She was the beloved wife of John “Jack” J. O’Connor Sr. for 55 years; loving mother of Susan Vashon, John “Jay” J. O’Connor and James “Jim” J. O’Connor; and cherished grandmother of Shannon Duggan, Heather and Forrest O’Connor.
Friends are invited to attend a vigil service at 7 tonight, Jan. 7, at Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary, 466 N. Winchester Blvd. A Funeral Mass will be held Jan. 8 at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church, 2350 Winchester Blvd., at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery
in Los Altos.
Sybil I. Stowers
Sybil I. Stowers died April 29, 2004, in San Jose with her caring family by her side.
Sybil was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Hugo, Okla.
She was the beloved wife of the late Willard P. Stowers and the mother of late Jeffrey Lee Stowers.
Sybil is survived by her daughter Gayle Cummins; grandchildren Deborah and Bruce Buckles, Jeffrey Cummins and Pamela St. Cloud; and great-grandchildren Christina St. Cloud, Lindsay Buckles, Samantha Hedden and Clayton Cummins.
Private family services have been held.
Arrangements were by Johnson Funeral Home.
Thomas S. Castle
Thomas S. Castle, civic leader and prominent businessman, died Friday, April 30, 2004, after a lengthy illness. A lifelong resident of Santa Clara County, Mr. Castle had been a Morgan Hill resident for 45 years. Over 20 of those years were spent working in city government including terms as mayor, city councilman and planning commissioner. He was named Citizen of the Year in 1979.
Mr. Castle was born Dec. 26, 1922 , in San Francisco to Albert Castle and his wife, the former Margaret Casey of Ireland. He attended schools in Mountain View, later attending U.C. Davis majoring in horticulture science. His formal education was followed by a four-year stint in the Air Force. In 1947 he married the former Jean Rielle and settled in Los Altos.
He joined his father’s small seed and fertilizer business doing such jobs as seed sales, deliveries and formulating chemicals. When his father retired he took control of the company moving the business to Morgan Hill in 1959. He built an office and warehouse to accommodate his business, A.L. Castle, Inc. on a 40-acre berry ranch located on what is now known as Vineyard Boulevard.
Under Castle’s direction, the company grew from four employees to more than 100. Through his hard work and determination, the company gained a worldwide reputation for seed quality and effective research. He went on to form Thomas S. Castle Farms, Inc. which grew vine crops primarily focusing on breeding different tomato varieties. In 1985, Castle sold his business to Arco Seed Co.
Rather than retire, Mr. Castle started a farming business in Santiago, Chile, where he grew hybrid watermelon and cantaloupe seed. He continued to manage this business, Semillas Castle, until his health failed him approximately six years ago.
He was involved in many organizations over the years: Elks Club, Lions Club, Commonwealth Club to mention a few. He was a past chairman of the Santa Clara County Library Commission and was an honorary member of the Future Farmers of America. He was a past president of the California Seed Association and the Pacific Seed Association. He had a reputation for being fair and just. In his later years, he was an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association.
He had a passion for hunting and fishing. He held a private pilot license and enjoyed flying his family to Mexico on vacation.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 57 years, Jean; sons Jamie and Mike; daughter Nancy; four grandchildren Robin Mayer and her husband, Ray of New Jersey, Stephanie and Christine Castle of Gilroy and Christopher Castle of Capitola. He was a great-grandfather to Ashley Margaret Mayer of New Jersey.
A memorial service takes place at 11 a.m. Friday, May 14, at Johnson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Odyssey Hospice, 1500 Hamilton Avenue, Suite 212, Campbell, Calif. 95008.
