Jack Gifford Watkins Sr., M.D.

Jack Gifford Watkins Sr., M.D., 79, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004 at his home in Ione.
Dr. Watkins was born July 13, 1925 to Robert and Violet Watkins in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a veteran serving in the United States Navy as a pilot during World War II. He married Katherine Geller on Dec. 9, 1966 in Fullerton.
Dr. Watkins was a pediatrician for 51 years, practicing for nine years in Richland, Wash. at the Richland Clinic. He served as chief of staff of Kadlec Hospital in Richland. He designed the pediatric department when the Roseville Hospital was renovated in the 1960s and was the first pediatrician in Placer County. He covered football games for Oakmont and Roseville high schools for 14 years. He was instrumental in the implementation and success of the Head Start program in the state of California.
His compassion, advocacy for the silent and his lifelong dedication to the service of others were truly his greatest contributions.
Dr. Watkins was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Legion Post 108 in Sutter Creek.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and taking trips in his motor home. As a pilot he enjoyed flying, building model airplanes (one was in the works) and flying his models.
He loved children and being a pediatrician. Dr. Watkins missed the children very much upon retiring from pediatrics in 1993. He assisted in surgery at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson until 2002.
Dr. Watkins is survived by his wife of 37 years, Katherine R. Watkins of Ione; daughter and son-in-law Christine and Duncan Wolff of Clarkston, Wash.; son Jeffrey Watkins of Lewiston, Idaho; sons and daughters-in-law Jack G. Jr. and Taylor Watkins of Lewiston, Idaho, Richard A. and Kalene Watkins of Ogden, Utah and Jess Eric and Nenny Watkins of Elk Grove; Scooter, “his little Yorkie;” grandchildren, Daryll Wolff, Amber Watkins, Hannah Watkins, Kimberly Watkins, Jacqueline Watkins, Kirk Wolff, Jeffrey Jr. Watkins, Logan Watkins, Cody Watkins, Brandon Watkins, Darah Watkins, Nathan Watkins, Jaimie Watkins, Kyle Watkins, Seth Watkins and Kylie Watkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Violet and Robert Arthur Watkins and his twin brother, Robert A. Watkins Jr.
Friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday, Nov. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. at Daneri Mortuary Chapel in Jackson. Interment will be in the Garden of Golden Memories at Sunset View Cemetery
in Martell. Arrangements have been entrusted to Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Ruth O. Hendryx
Ruth O. Hendryx, 89, died on Friday, Nov. 19, 2004 in Tucson, Ariz.
She was born Oct. 8, 1915 to Gordon and Allie Beach in Boulder, Colo. Ruth owned trucking businesses in Templeton and Hayward for 20 years and was an owner of a restaurant for 16 years.
She enjoyed square dancing, bowling, traveling and painting and made Amador County her home for 16 years.
She is survived by her daughters, Donna McCulloch of Santa Rosa, Merry Kady of Tucson, Ariz., Debra; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Linda Hendryx of Sacramento, Tim and Dawnie Hendryx of Douglas, Mont., sister and brother-in-law, Bernadine and Marvin Dillon of Jackson; sister-in-law, Blanche Beach of Sutter Creek; brother-in-law, Lawrence Brown of Denver, Colo.; 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George “Sarge” Hendryx in 1992; sister, Mary Brown and brother, Gordon “Earl” Beach.
There will be no services at the family’s request. Inurnment will be private. Arrangments are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Louis “Lew” George Williams, Sr.
Dec. 29, 1919 - Nov. 22, 2004
Louis “Lew” George Williams, Sr., 84, died on Monday, Nov. 22, 2004 at Greenfield Care Center in Jackson.
Mr. Williams was born on Dec. 29, 1919 in San Francisco and graduated from Commerce High School. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the Panama Canal before World War II. During the war, he was stationed at Manus Island in the Coral Sea.
On Dec. 30, 1945, he married Loretta Elizabeth Stanislavic in Chicago. When Lew was discharged from the service, the couple made their home in San Francisco.
In 1952 the couple moved to Sunnyvale where they were self-employed. Lew was a Real Estate broker and his wife, Loretta, was an accountant. They retired in 1994 and moved to Jackson.
Lew won the first World’s Tournament of Craps and was known as “Mr. Keno.” He once played blackjack with Judy Garland and Bill Cosby.
He was active in the Sunnyvale and Jackson Elks lodges, was the past president of the Sunnyvale Board of Realtors and was involved in both the Sunnyvale and Amador Chamber of Commerce. During the 1970s, he was Ronald Reagan’s campaign manager for Santa Clara County.
He is survived by his daughter, Carol Ann Williams; son, Louis George Williams, Jr.; and one granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Williams.
Graveside service will be held on Monday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m., at Sunset View Cemetery
in Martell. Following the service, there will be a reception at the Jackson Elks Lodge, No. 2426, 12500 Kennedy Flat Road. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.
Coralea Mary (Spieth) Peyus
Aug. 14, 1924 - Nov. 20, 2004
Coralea Mary (Spieth) Peyus, 80, died in her sleep on Friday, Nov. 20, 2004 after battling Alzheimer's disease for 10 years.
Coralea was born Aug. 14, 1924. She is survived by her brother, Erwin Spieth and sister-in-law Barbara; sons, Albert, Jr. and Anthony; daughters-in-law, Sharon and Carole; grandchildren Trevor, Jeremiah, and Tyler; nieces, nephews and numerous friends and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert V. Peyus, Sr.
She is to be interred with her husband at Camellia Lawn Cemetery
in Sacramento on Friday, Dec. 3.

Bunnie Bentley
May 29, 1925 - Nov. 25, 2004
Bunnie Bentley, 79, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004 in Sacramento after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Mrs. Bentley was born on May 29, 1925 in Oklahoma.
Bunnie was a former resident of Burke Ranch in Plymouth. She and her husband Ron moved away from Southern California in 1981 after he retired from the Long Beach Fire Department. They spent their first 10 years of retirement at Burke Ranch, where they enjoyed gardening and entertained their grandchildren.
She was an active member of the Foothill Garden Club and became a Master Gardener through the University of California, Davis Extension Center.
Bunnie was very involved in the community of Plymouth. Because Plymouth did not have medical care, she and other concerned citizens established the Plymouth Medical Center and helped bring in the area’s first doctor.
She and Ron were members of the Pioneer Bible Church in Somerset. Through the women’s Bible study, many young women were inspired by Bunnie’s faith and wisdom.
In 1991, Bunnie and Ron moved to Cherry Valley to be near her family. Just as she had in her years at Burke Ranch, Bunnie embraced her new life and touched many people with her compassion and wit. She was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her daughters, Kris Le Meur, Janese Favret, and Debbie Wells; son, Jeff Bentley; siblings, Ann Wilson, Margaret Bessex, Ben Morton, Jim Morton and Bob Morton; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ron Bentley.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Kris Le Meur. 6507 Via Sereno in Rancho Murieta. For directions, call Janese Favret.
