Orion Lester Ames

Orion Lester Ames passed away on June 9, 2004 in Sacramento.

Mr. Lester was born on May 23, 1923 in Rail Road Flat.

He was a flight engineer stationed in Manduria, Italy during World War II. He was decorated with a Silver Star, two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart. After his discharge from military duty, he became a self employed logger and lumberman.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Ames; children, Lloyd Donald Ames of Glencoe, Ronald John Ames of Nashville, Tenn., Janet L. Duman of Ukiah, Catherine E. Stroh of Sacramento, Marci D. LaShells of Frederick, Md., and Karen LaShells of Sacramento; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held on Friday, June 18 at 11 a.m. at Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. Private inurnment will follow. Arrangements are being handled by Harry A. Nauman & Son Funeral Directors, 4041 Freeport Blvd., in Sacramento, 95822.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps, P.O. Box 22297, Sacramento 95822-0297.

Phyllis Elaine Wilder

Born Phyllis Elaine Knudsen, on May 20, 1916 in Eureka, this loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend entered in to rest on June 10, 2004 in Sunnyvale, surrounded by family. Preceded in death by her husband John J. Wilder, she is survived by her four children, Judy Whelan, Richard Wilder, Paul Wilder and Patricia Black, 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She and husband John (Jack) owned property in Pioneer for 35 years, of which they spent the last 20 of those years being retired there. They loved their life in Pioneer where they were active members of the Mother Lode Rose Society, maintained a beautiful rose garden of their own; had a great vegetable garden and apple orchard; also raised chickens as well as turkeys.

Unpretentious and sincere, this incredibly warm and generous woman loved people and made everyone feel comfortable by always being hospitable and showing an interest in their lives.

She spent a great deal of her life as an active volunteer in Santa Clara County, served as President of the PTA’s, Sunnyvale PTA Council, Director of Secondary 6th District California Congress of Parent-Teachers and President of the Sunnyvale Republican Women, Federated.

Being a strong patriot, she believed in hearing different points of view and enjoyed debating the issues. With a keen mind and quick wit she always loved to hear a good joke. Her generous spirit, infectious laugh and appreciation for life will be cherished in hearts and minds.

“Getting Tired” God saw you were getting tired / And a cure was not to be. / So He put His arm around you /And whispered ‘Come to me.’/ A golden heart topped beating,/ Hard working hands now rest./ God broke our hearts to prove to us / He only takes the best.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 3 p.m. at Spangler Mortuary, 399 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos. A private burial will be held Thursday, June 17, at Amador Memorial Cemetery in Pioneer. Arrangements were handled by Spangler Mortuary in Los Altos.

Betty Jean LaGiusa

Betty Jean LaGiusa, 76, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, in Jackson. She was born Oct. 12, 1927 in Eureka.

Friends are invited to attend a graveside service Monday, June 21 at 11 a.m. at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park in Watsonville. Interment will follow. Arrangement are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. Condolences may be offered at daneri@cdepot.net.

Lee Ann Williams

Lee Ann Williams, 67, of Jackson, died from pneumonia complicated by Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS), on Sunday June 13, 2004.

Lee Ann was born on March 29, 1937 in Antioch, graduated from  Jackson High School in 1955, then attended Sacramento State. After marriage she returned to  Jackson to raise her family.

In addition to her family, she had two great passions is life, horses and music. She was a very accomplished horse woman which she shared with others by giving riding lessons and being a 4H Leader. She also enjoyed showing her horses at the county fair and riding in the local parades.

She shared her love of music and her pure soprano voice by singing in church choirs and at many weddings. She was also a longtime member of the Amador Choraliers. All those that were fortunate enough to hear her sing were truly blessed.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 48 years, Jack R. Williams of Jackson; daughters, Darlene Williams of  Jackson and Julia Williams of Plymouth, and beloved granddaughters, Kelsi, Brittany, Tyler and Caitlyn.

At her request, no service will be held. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements were handled by the Neptune Society of Northern California in Sacramento.

Helen Marie Coffenberry

Helen Marie Coffenberry, 83, of  Jackson passed away on Monday, June 14, 2004, peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Coffenberry was born on Nov. 19, 1920 in  Jackson where she lived her entire life.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Lewis, Paula Byrd and Carol Waters; sons, Gary Coffenberry and Robert Metke; sons-in-law, Mike Lewis and Bill Byrd; daughters-in-law, Nina Coffenberry and Karen Metke.

She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Tracy and Krysta Lewis, Jennifer and William Byrd, Jaime Stewart, Janelle Waters, Amy Roussan, Nicole and Susan Coffenberry, Robbie and Kara Metke; great-grandsons, Tyler and Jacob Stewart and Dennis Roussan.

Mrs. Coffenberry was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Lloyd Coffenberry.

Memorial service will be held Friday, June 18 at 4 p.m. at Daneri, followed by a private inurnment on Saturday, June 19, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Jackson. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Amador, P.O. Box 595,  Jackson 95642. Condolences may be offered to the family at daneri@cdepot.net.

Katherine Theresa Fantozzi

Katherine Theresa Fantozzi, 101, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Kit Carson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jackson.

Mrs. Fantozzi was born on March 3, 1903 to Isadore and Eugena Orlandi in Spring Valley, Ill.

Katherine and her family moved to  Jackson when she was two years old. She married Arrigo Fantozzi and they owned and operated the Fantozzi Monument business on Church Street. Katherine was the bookkeeper for their business. She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Jackson.

She is survived by her brother, Joseph Orlandi of Stockton; nieces, Geraldine Hamilton of Stockton, Barbara Coldani of Lodi, Jackie Lawrence of Stockton; and nephew, John Tylar of Hillsborough.

The funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 27 at Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. Interment was at the  Jackson City Cemetery in Jackson. Arrangements were handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at daneri@cdepot.net.

Nellie June Castleberry

Nellie June Castleberry, 72 died on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at her home in Pine Grove.

Mrs. Castleberry was born on May 28, 1932 in Athens, Ala.

June was an active participant in the Pine Grove Community. In her later years she attained the title of Master Gardener and shared her gardening skills and knowledge through the Sierra Madre Garden Club. She was also a devoted member of the Mt. Zion Assembly of God Church and often volunteered to help needy families.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Bill Castleberry; three living children, Sharon Ponchak, Duane Berger and Harold Berger; and five grandchildren. She will be missed by all who were touched by her.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 28 at 10 a.m. at Mt. Zion Assembly of God, 13891 Cedar Pine Lane in Pine Grove. Interment will be on Thursday, July 29 at 2:30 p.m. at Rolling Hills Memorial Park, 4100 Hilltop Drive in Richmond. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.
