Jack Lewis Kuhl

Jack Lewis Kuhl, 84, passed away following an extended illness on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at University Retirement Center in Davis.

Mr. Kuhl was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1919 on the Birchdale Ranch on Indian Creek in Eastern Oregon. Jack was the second of three sons and his parents, P. J. and Echo Kuhl, were second generation cattle ranchers. From these rural roots began a lifelong association with agricultural pursuits.

Following his schooling in Prairie City, Ore., Jack entered Idaho Teachers College in Lewiston, Idaho. He then transferred to Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore., to study Animal Husbandry.

While in college, Jack attended a Methodist Church social mixer where he met his life’s companion, Ruth Annette Swift of California. Both similar in background and temperament, she shared his passion for the ranching lifestyle. Jack and Ruth were married on April 15, 1944, in Sacramento.

His college years were interrupted by the military service. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry following graduation from Officer Training School at Ft. Benning, Ga. He was then deployed with the 10th Mountain Division for their campaigns through Italy.

Among his decorations were the Silver Star, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Purple Heart. The Silver Star was awarded for his actions on April 15, 1945. Ironically, this was his first wedding anniversary.

Following college graduation, Ruth and Jack started ranching on Latrobe Road in Amador County, where they raised their three children; Michael, Jeanine and Jackie. Since 1977, Ruth and Jack have lived on Ups & Downs Ranch, outside Valley Springs in Calaveras County.

Throughout his life, Jack was a teacher. His first teaching job was in 1947, when he became vocational agricultural instructor with Modesto Junior College. More than 20 years later, Jack returned to teaching after receiving his masters degree and teaching credential from the University of California, Davis.

Following this, Jack taught for four years as the Director of Vocational Agriculture at Ceres High School. In 1974 he moved to Calaveras High School in San Andreas, where he taught until his retirement in 1988.

Another defining characteristic of his life was public service. Jack served as a 4-H leader for over 20 years, beginning when he and Ruth helped to organize and establish 4-H in Amador County prior to having the services of an Agricultural Extension Agent; the only time that occurred in the state of California.

He was member of the Amador County Board of Education for a number of years, including two years as the chairman of that organization.

Jack was a life-long member of the Farm Bureau, joining in 1948. He served in many capacities, including President in both Amador and Calaveras counties and serving on the board of directors of the California Farm Bureau Federation representing the 12th District. In 2002 that organization honored him with a Distinguished Service Award for a lifetime of service to Farm Bureau and California Agriculture.

He also maintained a long and active affiliation and service with the United Methodist Church (UMC) which included his serving a head of the Administrative Board at the Community UMC in Valley Springs.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Kuhl; son, Michael of Mill Valley; daughter, Jeanine of Alexandria, Va.; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by the youngest daughter, Jackie this year.

Memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 20 at 3 p.m. at the Community UMC, 135 Laurel St., in Valley Springs.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts may be made to California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom, 2300 River Plaza Drive, Sacramento 95833, or Valley Springs Community UMC.
