Diane Hess

A memorial service for Diane Lynne Hess will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Nevada and High streets, in Nevada City.
Mrs. Hess died Friday after a 10-year battle with cancer.
She was an active member of the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Trinity Episcopal Church, the St. Agnes Guild and the Altar Guild.
She is survived by her husband, Delaine; son, David; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Michael Hicks; and three grandchildren.
Memorial contributions are preferred to Trinity Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 416, Nevada City, 95959-0416.
Sandra Collins

Sandra B. "Al" Collins died Friday in Grass Valley. She was 52.
Memorial services will be private.
Mrs. Collins was retired. She had worked for Southern California Edison as an engineering controls designer. She enjoyed her pets and gardening, and participated in charitable organizations as well as the Sister City committee of Rosemead.
She is survived by her husband, Howard Collins of Grass Valley; daughter, Laura Lamb of Oakdale; sister, Judy Drake of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother, Ernie Bentley of Bakersfield; stepchildren Wendy, Sheryl, Brian and John Collins, all of Southern California; and one grandchild.
Memorial contributions may be made to the City of Hope.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
Delcie Ames

Graveside services for Delcie E. Ames of Penn Valley will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sierra Memorial Lawn in Nevada City. Pastor David Hartman of the Christian Church of Grass Valley will officiate.
Mrs. Ames died Friday in Grass Valley. She was 81.
She was born Feb. 25, 1915, in Bartlett, Iowa to Joseph Edgar and Mary Susan (Dukes) Howery. She married Nelson Ogden Ames in July 1932 in Fremont, Neb. She served as lead autonetics inspector with Rockwell Aerospace for 33 years.
She is survived by her son, Nelson D. Ames of Penn Valley; brother, John Howery of Thurmon, Iowa; sister, Mayme Scarp of Atlantic, Iowa; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
Vasilou, George

George Vasilou, 81, of Grass Valley died Monday at home.
No services are planned.
Mr. Vasilou was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Corinth, Greece to Michael and Sophia (Poulos) Vasilou. He attended school in Greece before moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., at the age of 13. He completed school in New York.
After his school years, he boxed in the Golden Gloves Boxing Competition and later as a professional boxer before joining the U.S. Army. He served in the Army from 1939 to 1961. He was deployed in the Panama Canal Zone during World War II.
After his discharge, Mr. Vasilou went to work in the civil service for the U.S. Coast Guard in the quartermaster department. He retired in 1980. In 1990, he moved from Long Beach to Nevada County. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Richmond of Grass Valley; son, Thomas Vasilou of Pensacola, Fla.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and distant relatives in Greece. He was preceded in death by his brother Jimmy Vasilou in 1993.

Sutton, Agnes

A funeral for Agnes Sutton of Livermore will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward. Burial will be at the Mountain View Cemetery
in Oakland.
Mrs. Sutton died Tuesday in Grass Valley. She was 88.
She was born Feb. 15, 1908, in Prague, Czechoslovakia to August and Emilie Nemec. Her family moved from Czechoslovakia to Omaha, Neb., when she was 5 years old and she lived there until 1919, when she moved to Missouri. She married Vernon Sutton in 1929, in St. Louis, Mo.
They moved in 1944 to Alameda and then to Livermore in 1980. She worked as a telephone operator for 31 years at the Alameda Naval Air Station. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She enjoyed cooking.
She is survived by her daughters Shirley Mullaly of Nevada City, and Virginia Medders of Anniston, Ala.; son, Robert Sutton of Oroville; sister, Emily Sutton of St. Louis, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Sutton, in 1972; daughter, Ruth Herriage in 1996; and son, Ted Sutton in 1964.

Liebgott, John

A funeral for John J. Liebgott of Grass Valley will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery
in Hayward.
Mr. Liebgott died Tuesday in a local care facility. He was 95.
He was born June 6, 1901, in Austria to Thaddeus and Barbara (Chich) Liebgott. His family moved from Austria to St. Paul, Minn., and then to Oakland in 1926. He later lived in San Leandro and Castro Valley before moving to Grass Valley 33 years ago. He worked for 25 years as a metalsmith and machinist at the Alameda Naval Air Station.
He is survived by his daughter, Dolores Hartz of Aptos; son Elbert Liebgott of Lake Almanor; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Liebgott in 1979.
