Virginia M. Smith

Virginia M. Smith, 92, died Saturday, April 10 at Christian Heritage Convalescent in Upland.

A native of  Pennsylvania, Smith was a resident of Fontana for 57 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Fontana.

Smith is survived by one daughter, Debra L. Grieci of Fontana; one son, Glenn Ruffner of Arizona; and six sisters, June Cunningham of Moreno Valley, Wilma Best of  Washington, Cleda Craven of Calimesa, and Betty Anderson, La Roux Price, and Carole McElligott, all of  Pennsylvania. Other survivors include nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, William John Ruffner.

Funeral service was scheduled for Wednesday, April 14 at Ingold Chapel, Fontana, with private interment at Green Acres Memorial Park, Bloomington. Ingold Chapel, Fontana, was in charge of arrangements.

Rosaria Bica

Rosaria Bica, 99, died Monday, July 12 at Casa Maria Convalescent Hospital.

A native of Italy, Bica was a resident of Fontana for 58 years. Bica was the owner of an ice cream shop for 20 years and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Sons of Italy in Fontana.

Bica is survived by one daughter, Frances Finazzo (and husband Frank) of Fontana. Other survivors include grandchildren Paul Finazzo, Mary Ann Beckham (and husband Wayne), Dr. John Finazzo (and wife Lorna), James Finazzo, and Linda Gafner (and husband Mark); great-grandchildren Angela, Jeffrey, and Christina Beckham and Marcus Gafner; and daughter-in-law Giovanna Bica.

Funeral mass was scheduled for Wednesday, July 14 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fontana, with interment to follow at Bellevue Memorial Park, Ontario. Ingold Chapel, Fontana, was in charge of arrangements.

David Charles Delair

David Charles Delair, 59, died Wednesday, July 7 at UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles.

A native of New Jersey, Delair was a resident of Calimesa. He was a police officer for 27 years before retiring. He graduated from Fontana High School in 1963 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a former employee of General Telephone.

Delair is survived by his wife, Becky; his mother, Rose Delair of Fontana; one son, Jason Delair (and daughter-in-law Tina) of California; one daughter, Adrienne Delair of Fontana; two stepsons, Brian Potts and James Potts (and daughter-in-law Maureen) of California; one brother, Walt Delair (and sister-in-law Rosely) of Fontana; and four sisters, Audrey Grace (and brother-in-law Tom) of Banning, Jeannette  Johnson (and brother-in-law Dennis) of Yucaipa, Joanne Parker of Oceanside and Joan Harrison of Yucaipa. Other survivors include seven grandchildren and 16 nieces and nephews.

Memorial service was scheduled for Saturday, July 17 at 11 a.m. at Ingold Chapel, Fontana, with interment to follow at Bellevue Memorial Park, Ontario. Ingold Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the UCLA Medical Center UC Regions, Attn: Marcia Morrissey, 650 Charles E. Young Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90095. All donations made must be in David Charles Delair's name.

Guenther Pfeiffer

Guenther Pfeiffer, 75, died Friday, Sept. 10 at his home in Fontana.

A native of Germany, Pfeiffer was a resident of Fontana for 38 years. He worked for Aerojet for 10 years and for Kaiser Steel for 10 years.

Pfeiffer is survived by his wife, Ilse; one son, Dieter Pfeiffer of Rialto; and one daughter, Christa Clark of New Orleans, La. Other survivors include three grandchildren.

Graveside service was scheduled for Friday, Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. at Montecito Memorial Park, Loma Linda, with interment to follow. Ingold Chapel, Fontana, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary “Louise” Moore

Mary “Louise” Moore, 87, died Sunday, Feb. 8.

Moore was born Sept. 28, 1921 in Nashville, Tenn. to Mary and William Young. She has resided in the Inland Empire since 1963. She was a mother and homemaker and taught at Parnell Girls School for 10 years. She attended Chaffey Community College and Cal State San Bernardino. She belonged to the Foursquare Churches in Upland, Fontana and Colton. She taught Sunday School for 60 years. She lived her faith and taught by example.

Moore is survived by daughter Emmalene Roloff (Deane) of Arizona; Son Gerard F. Cotter (Jann) of San Diego; daughter-in-law Cindy Cotter of San Bernardino; daughter-in-law Sally Smith of Palm Springs; loving stepchildren David (Sharon) Moore of Ontario, Francis Parks and Patti Moore of Arizona, Marilyn (Jerry) Everett of Victorville and Glorine Ward of Indiana; and grandchildren Valarie (Greg Serrato, Andrea (Ron) Sindelar, Christi (Tony) Fontenot, Chessa (Chad) Honey, Rhonda Scott, ack Henslee, Allen Henslee, John Cotter, and Laura Cotter. Other survivors include 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Moore; one daughter, Enzia Cotter; two sons, Joseph and Gregory Cotter; and grandson David Henslee.

Funeral service was scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at Stanley L. Dickey Mortuary, Fontana, with burial to follow at Bellevue Memorial Park in Ontario. Dickey Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Rose M. Urbano

Rose M. Urbano, 78, died Saturday, Feb. 7 at her home of cancer.

Urbano was born in Canton, Ohio, the daughter of Manuel and Rosinda Moran. The family moved to Fontana in 1944. She graduated from Chaffey High School in 1947 and married Gilbert V. Urbano on May 9, 1947. She was a homemaker, loving wife, and mom. She was a great Little League mom and was even the scorekeeper at times.

Urbano is survived by her husband of 61 years, Gilbert; her son Gary of Fontana; daughter Karen L. Clayburn of Denver,  Colo.; her sister Tina Jarrell of Fontana; her grandchildren Sammy and Robert Morse and Jennifer and Kristen Clayburn; and great-grandchildren Genisis, Trindee, Aiden Clayburn-Torres and Michael and Irealand Morse.

A viewing and visitation was scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Stanley L. Dickey Mortuary, Fontana. The funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. at Dickey Mortuary, followed by a patio gathering and a private burial at Riverside National Cemetery. Dickey Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Mary Jahnke “Nanny”

Frances Mary Jahnke “Nanny,” 94, died Thursday, Feb. 5 at her Victorville home in the loving care of her family.

Jahnke was born on a farm in Radom, Ill. to Frank and Martha Kwiatkowski. She was the youngest of 10 children and the last survivor of her original family. She married August Joseph Jahnke “Gus,” and their union lasted 74 years. She was a homemaker. She moved to San Bernardino County in 1950. She and her family lived in Rialto, Lytle Creek and Fontana and then moved to Victorville in 1977.

Jahnke enjoyed watching NASCAR and “I love Lucy,” dancing, crafts, sewing, knitting, cooking, gardening, playing cards and fishing. She was a hardworking, strong woman and a good Catholic. She will be missed but forever remembered with love in our hearts, said her family members.

Jahnke is survived by her husband, Gus; their daughter Norma Holladay (Harold) of Rialto; grandchildren Rene Holladay of Victorville, Rory (Annette) Holladay of Canyon Lake, and April (Brian) Wolf, Summer Jahnke and Autumn (Jeff) Palmer, all of Big Bear Lake; nine great grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) Klaers of Peyton,  Colo., Jeremy (Susie) Klaers of Apple Valley, Sharon Klaers of Dana Point, Ashley Holladay of North Hollywood, Shelby Holladay of Lake Elsinore, and McKenzie Wolf, Logan Wolf, Landen Palmer and Jerzey Palmer, all of Big Bear Lake; and great-great-grandchildren Andrew Klaers of Apple Valley, Ethen Klaers, Lauren Klaers and Kayden Klaers, all of Peyton,  Colo. and Kennedy Klaers of Apple Valley. She was preceded in death by her only son, Mel Jahnke, and one grandson, Jeff Jahnke.

A scripture service was held Tuesday, Feb. 10, followed by a patio luncheon and burial at Green Acres Memorial Park. Stanley L. Dickey Mortuary, Fontana, was in charge of arrangements.

Carol Hughes

A memorial Mass for Carol Jane Hughes of Grass Valley will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Church.

Mrs. Hughes died Friday at home. She was 59.

She was a native of Modesto and had resided in Grass Valley for 33 years. She graduated from Downieville High School, attended San Jose State University and Mary's Help College of Nursing in San Francisco.

She retired from the Grass Valley School District as a nurse's aide. She was a 4-H leader for 15 years and active with local folk and square dance groups.

She is survived by her husband, Denis Hughes; sons James and David of Grass Valley, Christopher of the U.S. Army base in Fort Richardson, Alaska; daughters, Maureen of Cedar Ridge and Sheila Campbell of Nevada City; twin sister, Carlene Thompson of Greybull, Wyo.; sister, Bethel Rogers of South San Francisco; brother, Michael Gillen of Winnemucca, Nev.; half-sisters Gae Adams of Fremont and Sally Rice of Kentucky; half-brother, Robert Fisk of Tennessee; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Aid Thrift Shop, Hospice of the Foothills, or the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research, P.O. Box 97100, Dallas, TX 75397.
